We attended the Southwest Aquatic Society holiday party this past weekend - a fun and action packed day with local aquarists.

We supported the club by helping with the raffle - the club sponsors came through with some awesome donations!

Delicious holiday lunch was served, a huge auction, 40+ gift white elephant gift exchange and the raffle ..what a day!!

They are VERY interested in the sweet potato roots 😆

Pro tip: if you forget about the sweet potato in your pantry and it grows roots, put it in your tank to help with nitrates!

They do great in warm waters, around 78°. Raised in Phoenix tap water.

Found this shrimp after not seeing anything in tank 3 (the tank the shrimp is in) for at least 2 weeks!

This is a red cherry shrimp (neocaridina) and likes a pH of about 6.5 - 7.5. It was raised in Phoenix tap water. A good temperature is around 76°F.

New addition to our 10 gal tall tank - a beautiful piece of cholla wood! Picked this one up at our local Swap meet last weekend.

How do we prepare wood before it goes into a tanks? Typically we like to boil it for about 20 mins to sanitize it and release the .
This one was too large for any of our pots so we left it submerged for a full week.

Soaking and/or boiling also helps waterlog the wood ( it), once it's in the tank.

Meet Luna, our male Leucistic Axolotl! This is a Throwback photo from when we first got him and his tank was still cycling.

Axolotl can be an easy pet if you do your research and set everything up properly from the start. A cycled tank, proper substrate (or no substrate, depending on age), no rough edges on decor, hides, a bubbler (optional - some like them!), proper water temps/parameters and plenty of filtration (at least double the size of your tank).

Picked up some nice plants over the weekend. They are now in quarantine and will be added to the tanks soon. We picked up , , , , , , and .

After getting them into temp tubs, we discovered some pests that we do not want to add to our tanks. These plants will be treated with an Alum Soak before being introduced into our stable environments.

These Yellow Goldenbacks look amazing in a tank with black sand as the substrate - really makes their color POP! We use Black Diamond Blasting Sand. Make sure you comb through it during water changes as it may cause an ammonia spike.
