Teach Your Dog Steering with "Left" & "Right" 🐶➡️⬅️
A loose turn is when your dog turns left or right ahead of you—different from a tight turn/wing wrap, which is a full U-turn around an obstacle. Perfect for agility, canicross, or just avoiding tripping over them on a walk! 🏃♂️🐾
You’ll Need:
🔹 3 obstacles (jump wings, chairs, cones, bins—whatever you have!)
🔹 2 bowls
🔹 A handful of treats
Decide on Your Words:
🔸 Left = Anticlockwise turn (dog turns on their left shoulder, my right arm is out)
🔸 Right = Clockwise turn
How to Train It:
Dog trainers follow a simple 3-step formula for teaching any new skill:
1️⃣ Lure – Use food in your hand to guide the turn.
2️⃣ Fade the Lure – Your hand closest to them is empty; reward after the turn, building independence.
3️⃣ Add a Cue – Be consistent! "Left", "Right"
🎯 Want to level up? Increase distance (how big the circuit is), duration (how many times they circle for each reward), or add distraction (e.g. tep away while your dog is turning to see if they stay committed to the obstacle and direction you've cued).
🔥 Try this and let me know how your dog gets on! Share this with a friend who wants better steering on walks or in sport! 🚀

🎯 Watch Darwin in action! He's T.A.R.G.E.T trained, so the Place Board is a 'hotspot' for rewards, which reinforces his steadiness, a direct return, and delivery to hand - even over obstacles and tough terrain. 🐾
The Place Board is our go-to tool for teaching precise gundog skills, including steadiness to fall, recall and delivery to hand on every retrieve!
Have you tried using a Place Board in your training? Let us know how it’s going in the comments! 👇

A big thank you to Lucy @canine In-Tuition for hosting a private group of ADW members for a Private Gundog Workshop at her ground near Ousden last weekend
Training themes included Place Boards, Heekwork, Steadiness and Retrieves.
Teach your dog calm greetings with a Place board – the ultimate Dog Training Platform! 🐾 The placeboard acts as a reward hotspot, helping your dog learn boundaries and self-control.
Luna is T.A.R.G.E.T trained, meaning she knows the placeboard is where all the good stuff happens! With consistent practice, she’s proofed against smaller distractions, using movement and voice to mimic real scenarios, before tackling the excitement of guests arriving.
Luna now calmly sits and stays, no matter who comes through the door.
Doesn’t she make it look easy? Look at that happy Spaniel! 🐶
