Why do birds suddenly appear…. on the busiest of roads right in the middle of crazy traffic?

Good thing it cooperated and let me catch it after I crawled around the streets in a bright red dress. Wish us luck. Poor thing is probably an abandoned pet - very tame.

As you head home for the holidays, you might be interested to know that baby rats experience different genetic development depending on how much their mothers groom them, so make sure you hug your loved ones if only for the happiness of their DNA.

But don't lick them, especially during cold & flu season. Leave the licking to the rats!

What a day it has been! I would like to share what goes behind the scenes in catching dumped, injured pet bunnies. We often see people posting a photo and saying, “oh is this someone’s lost pet?” instead of securing it to safety. The thing is, with domestic animals, you have to act fast as even a short time being out can cause thousands of dollars worth of vet care for their injuries.

A neighborhood friend of mine and her kind son had spotted a bunny with ear injuries hiding under some portables in a school yard. I alerted my friend in rescue, Hagrid's Haven Rabbit Rescue, to join us in catching this bunny in such a big space.

We surrounded the areas in pens and carriers and worked to move it toward a cage, but alas, she escaped to a neighbors yard. Unfortunately, this neighbor is someone who puts out large kill traps and trespasser warning signs. It took great effort for him to allow us to secure the bunny, as he firmly believed that we shouldn’t rescue the injured bunny as “it would be fine in the garden” even where the huge kill traps are.

After a narrow escape and much effort, we found that this poor little one not only had injuries, infections, fleas, and trauma… it also had a huge botfly larva eating through its ear area. As pictured below, we managed to remove it, exposing a good patch of abscess wounds.

At least she is safe for now, thanks to ALL the helping hands and a whole day of chasing and herding. Please head on over to Hagrid’s Haven Rabbit Rescue to see updates on how she’s doing, and send them a donation to help with the vet care that’s to come.

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of posts with people asking what kind of pellets to feed, and if they can only just feed pellets.

Here’s a cool graphic to show that rabbits need very little pellets, or even better, none at all! Make sure you provide ample Timothy hay and some good romaine lettuce!

The sweet little Kiwi turned out to be pregnant after all. Thankfully she was trapped and brought in in time before she gave birth to ten little beans. We are keeping close watch on her as she’s been bleeding quite a bit post childbirth, and we will have to get her monitored at the vet.

We are happy to welcome donations (which we rarely ask for) to provide care for all the animals in our sanctuary care:

"Fact: Rats are awesome! They’re really smart, too—once they learn how to get from one place to another, they never forget the route. They can even recognize their own names and respond when called." ~ PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)

Let's treat them with the care and respect they so deserve, not exploit them in cruel and unnecessary laboratory experiments.

I am so grateful for my foster J.L. for stepping in to help out with these two darlings. Sadly, their owner was unable to provide care, food, and upkeep for over a month now. When they first arrived, they did not stop eating for an entire day and are now so happy to be in a safe environment!

Please consider donating, adopting, and fostering to make a difference.

I'm not sure if people have heard of this, but Reptilia is a private zoo that's attempting to set up in London Ontario. Right now we have a bylaw that bans all private zoos, however, they're seeking an exemption. They did this back in 2018 and were rejected and unsuccessfully have tried getting city councils of nearby towns (e.g. St. Catharines) to amend their similar anti-zoo bylaws as well. They're now planning on doing this again at a city council meeting on November 29th. They've currently built an empty store in Westmount mall.

You can learn more about it here: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/reptilia-london-ontario-westmount-mall-1.6348243

One way to help is to just email the people who'll be on the council and let them know that you're hoping they'll uphold the 2018 decision. These are their emails:

[email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]

I'll paste a generic email blurb below, in case you're feeling lazy.

Hello members of the council,

I am contacting you about the council meeting on November 29th concerning Reptilia. I am asking that the City of London maintain their 2018 decision to reject Reptilia's request to expand into London Ontario.

While Reptilia brands itself as a 'zoo and conservation centre', animal rights activists and Marie Blosh - vice-chair of the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee - have raised concerns about the welfare of exotic animals kept in captivity. Private zoos have been banned in London more than a decade ago, however, by granting Reptilia an exemption, we run the risk of setting a dangerous precedent for the inclusion of zoos more generally, which ultimately undermine the welfare of exotic animals and the health and safety of those who interact with them.

In addition to trying to circumvent democratic decision making by disregarding the City of London's 2018 decision, Reptilia also recently withdrew their application for amendments to the City of St. Catharine's By-Law 95-212. The company has a disreputable track record of trying to exploit legal loop-holes to turn ultimately turn a profit on exotic animals in towns that, as yet, fortunately do not allow zoos to operate. Conceding to their demands would harm the interests of both animals and Londoners.

CBC News has learned a controversial Ontario reptile zoo plans to open a new location in the city, despite council turning it down in 2018 and banning private zoos altogether more than a decade ago.

I am sick to my stomach knowing this man is going around pretending he rescued and is asking for free cages. We had to pay a very hiked up $$$ to take 10 tiny babies that he deemed untameable and aggressive. He has also blocked Teeny Snoots Rat Rescue, so myself and a kind volunteer had to drive 3 hours in the snow to save these poor darlings.

Do NOT adopt out to him, and keep us updated on anything you see on his posts.

Tonight, a wonderful friend and client of mine embarked upon a 3-hour travel on a snowy rescue mission. I want to thank Sherri for driving to make this possible, and to Teeny Snoots Rat Rescue for taking over.

It starred with this person below who said that he rescued 10 lives and needed cages pronto as he had difficulty housing and separating them, and needed cage donations. Little did other kind souls know, that he actually PURCHASED them with intention to mass breed as snake food, and wanted breeding cages for free. When he was approached by Teeny Snoots, he had the audacity to block the rescue because he did not want the rats to be anything more than doomed feeders.

Thankfully, Sherri was able to write and say that her partner wanted the rats, and we would happily take from him. He scalped big time and demanded 80$ for us to take this off his hands. As we got the bin full of babies from him, he kept insisting that they would NEVER be Hand tame, as they are aggressive, stubborn, and impossible to handle.

It turns out that his genius plan to mass breed did not work out as he did not know how to separate the genders or how to keep them housed properly for “breeding” and wanted them gone, so he could collect more cages in the time being. I’m constantly appalled at how sadistic, evil, and moronic humans are. These are lives, and not for you to play god.

On a happier note: You might ask, what are they like? Well, they are calm, cuddly, and lovingly integrated at Teeny Snoots. Please consider donating and helping both my rescue and hers, as we do all of this out of pocket endlessly at all hours.

Our sweet handsome Merlin, raised from birth when we saved his mom from a nasty death, has finally passed in our arms today. This week, I told him, we will be working so much, but Sunday we will spend with you. And he waited and cuddled with us till the end.

There have been nights where I stayed up till 5am with him because he was scared and felt strange. He’s always been such a lovebug. We are so lucky to have brought him, his siblings, his mom into our lives. Rescue is painful, expensive, exhausting - but it does change their life.
