šŸŒˆ ā¤ļø Dahlia Feb 2021-Oct 25, 2024 ā¤ļø šŸŒˆ

Dahlia came to us at only 40g when her mom was killed by a car. We knew early on she was a special girlā€¦we worked with Dr. Bob to care for her ā€œwristā€ when we noted a deformity as she grew but through serial x-rays we determined it was a birth defect that was not able to be corrected. We knew she would succumb to chronic sores, infection and inevitable death if released into the wild.

In CT, wildlife in rehabilitation deemed not fit for release must be euthanized by law. Dahlias temperament and tenacity to not slow down despite her disability fueled our insistence that we couldnā€™t give up on her. She encouraged us to apply for and receive our USDA exhibitors license to make her an official part of the Farm River Team permanently and legally.

As our first educational ambassador, Dahlia brought awareness to thousands by sharing how special this species is. She joined us during countless educational programs at local schools, assisted living facilities, animal shelter events, fundraisers, and town sponsored events such as the Branford Festival and Animal Awareness Day. Dahlia helped so many people of all ages from toddlers through seniors gain an appreciation for how incredible Virginia Opossums really are.

Dahlia was a special guest on WTNH with our dear friend Meteorologist Ashley Baylor, she was showcased in the New Haven Register, CT insider and enjoyed meeting Chaz and AJā€¦.so many people heard her story and more importantly asked questions about how they can help all humans coexist with our native wildlife.

Dahlia taught us so much and we will be forever grateful for our time with her. We were blessed to have had almost 4 years with her and recognize she greatly exceeded most Opossums life expectancy thanks to the incredible veterinary care she received From Dr. Bob Schaper, South Wilton Veterinary Hospitalā€™s exotics team who researched and completed her spay to decrease the risk of premature death from pyometra, and in later life wellness care from Dr. Turmenne at Pet Shield Veterinary Hospital.

Please enjoy some of our favorite pictures of her and feel free to share your own experience with meeting Dahlia ā¤ļø

How quickly things change! The tiny fragile babies we were scared to post a week ago have grown by more than just bunny hops! šŸ¤£

10 days, 40 feeding times, 160 individual feedsā€¦.so far!

We are hoping to replenish our specialty formula which is made to be closest to rabbits milk composition as well as our hay and bedding supplies and start saving for their wellness exams with our vet - we appreciate any help you can provide šŸ©·

Sometimes we hesitate to post our at risk intakes because we donā€™t want to share sad news if things donā€™t go as plannedā€¦ā€¦taking a risk here but welcome four new baby buns to the crew. Domestic rabbit kits are very hard to raise - just like wild cottontailsā€¦. We avoid removing them from mom at all costs unless absolutely necessary. In this case a pet store sold 2 ā€œmaleā€ rabbits to a family and they woke up with quite a surprise. Unfortunately due to momā€™s young age, stress and inexperience she wasnā€™t feeding them and accidentally killed three babies. We took the remaining 4 as their existence was too much for her to handle. We will continue to do everything we can for them and hope that they thrive ā¤ļøšŸ¤žšŸ¼

He is ready to find his forever home! He was originally found outside with unknown cause of injury to his ears but abuse was suspected.

We are unsure about his age but he is at least 3 years old. He is looking for a quiet home with older kids where he can cuddle on the couch!

Sadly we are down to one baby from our suspected rodenticide poisoning passel of opossums šŸ˜ despite intensive care including fluids and vitamin k to reverse the anticoagulation this little boyā€™s last sibling passed this morning.

It breaks my heart to see him sleeping covering his eyes. They all snuggled so tightly and he is definately feeling the loss today. We gave him a stuffy to snuggle but we know itā€™s not the same.

He has looked the best all along and we will continue to do our best to help him recover and grow strong. Please join us and A Place Called Hope in insisting on our legislators advocating for banning second generation rodenticides. There are alternatives to the poisoning and suffering they cause to our wildlife. We can do better so we should do better.

This beautiful baby is new to the crew this evening. In really rough shape with a large part of the tail in a near complete amputation šŸ˜ž medicated and hydratedā€¦..needing lots of good vibes šŸ˜• thank you to Lorna one of our amazing local ACOā€™s for making yet ANOTHER trip to my house this season!

Off to work at the biscuit factory because that formula ainā€™t freeā€¦..

*edit to add* we are getting a lot of comments suggesting giving this baby something to knead onā€¦.please know that is something that is standardly done but with **this specific bun** we actually have tried our hands, various stuffed animals, rolled blankets etcā€¦.she gets far too over stimulated and ā€œpushes offā€ of everything and becomes frantic. Only on a flat surface (with paper towels to her tummy wonā€™t feel cold on the table) does she settle right in and ā€œnurseā€ well. Who are we to judge how she enjoys her milkies šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļøšŸ¤£

Today has been tough.

I went out to pick up a passel of baby opossums found with their mom who had passed in a shed. Some had passed alongside mom over what seemed to be a few daysā€¦ā€¦we were able to gather 7 very dehydrated and emaciated babies.

The mom (and babies) were showing signs of secondary poisoning from ingesting rodenticides. Mom had blood from the mouth and nose with no obvious trauma. One baby has a toe injury that just wonā€™t stop bleeding and another has blood in the urine.

There were large bait boxes noted on the property. When mice and rats take this bait they become easy targets for their predators such as opossums, fox and raptorsā€¦.leading to the poison impacting them as well.

Education is so important. People still just donā€™t seem to know that this poison kills so much more than mice and rats - it kills the animals who help keep their populations down also. The damage SGARā€™s is doing to our ecosystem is heart wrenching. Please follow our friends at A Place Called Hope who are doing everything they can to educate our community and fight for legislation banning the use of these poisons.

Thank you to my friends at Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter for being a second set of hands to stabilize them and provide immediate subq fluids. Despite our efforts we have already lost two of the babies. The remaining have been provided with vitamin K to help their blood clotting time and fight the anticoagulants. We may be too late but they are warm and together fighting ā¤ļø

This licensure comes with a lot of paperwork, surprise annual inspections, and some monetary fees BUT it allows us to share so many amazing animals with our followers through educational opportunities!

We are also proud to say that the enrichment and housing we provide not only meets but often exceeds federal requirements.

Hereā€™s to three more years! šŸŽ‰

This little one eared bossy boss found herself in care with our friend Christine at A Place Called Hope! Thanks to APCH for stabilizing her after she came in injured and sending her over to us! ā€œLuckilyā€ they had one of our carriers from when we sent an Osprey their way recently šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ nothing better than when rescues work together to get the animals to the people who know their species best ā¤ļø We are thankful to have been able to help them for a change since they are where we refer all of our local raptor calls!

Miss Sassypants has become quite the queen here this week!
