Words of wisdom to start your week off on a positive note. Have a happy Monday, my friends.
For those of you who didn't know about Esther the Wonder Pig - who crossed the rainbow bridge recently - Here she is as a baby, before she had changed millions of hearts and minds...If you visit their website https://www.estherthewonderpig.com/ you will learn all about her...Esther is the same type of pig as Rocksy, one of our residents. Esther, Rocksy and Dotty (our other pig resident) are all rescued 'farm/meat pigs'.
Good morning, beautiful. “One moment can change a day. One day can change a life. One life can change the world.” -The Buddah
- Jane Goodall is quoted - You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.

Kindness is Magic ❤️
One of Esthers Army's most popular and most shared posts is that of "The Three Gatekeepers." It reflects everything Esther encouraged: love, kindness, and respect for all kinds, including human kind. 🥰
Before posting on social media, may we always ask ourselves these three questions:
1. Is it true?
2. Is it kind?
3. Is it necessary?
What a beautiful way to honor Esther and her legacy of kindness.
Peace.Love.Esther. ❤️
Esther the Wonder Pig has passed over the rainbow bridge. Esther and her family at Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary inspired so many people to make more compassionate choices and to see how few differences there are between 'farm' and 'pet' animals.
Rocksy and Dotty, the pig residents here Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary, and the rest of us send our love to Derek Walter and Steve Jenkins and Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary 🐷 Esther’s legacy will continue ❤️
Hello, everybody.
There’s no easy way to say this, but the day we all wished would never come has arrived. Esther has passed away. She was calm and peaceful, and fell asleep with her dad Steve by her side.
While we understand many of you will have questions, and we will have the answers for you , but we are going to take a little break to process the situation.
Even though Esther is no longer physically with us, her memory and legacy will live forever. Esther is immortal, and we will continue to show the world that all animals deserve to be loved just like she was.
Sending love and happy thoughts to each and every one of you. We know you all loved her just as much as we did, and we thank you for that.
Xoxoxox.
This special turkey was part of Esther the Wonder Pig's family. This lovely little video is a tribute to him (he passed away recently).
Please think of C***o and turkeys like him - and have mercy this thanksgiving

As you know, birds have a special place in our hearts - please take the time to cut these rings. Even the rings that are still on the neck of the bottle can be dislodged and then picked up by an animal or bird. Please remove and cut before disposing of the bottle.
Please...
Trapping animals and relocating them isn't the best option
Please help the turtles cross the road - and remember the hatchlings are trying to get to water now and they are tiny (the size of a loonie)
turtles will be moving across the roads once again this year. if you can safely help them, make sure to assist them off the road!

Beautiful rescue story
We understand not everyone is a fan of skunks, especially if they spray in defense against a curious pet. Here is a great recipe to stop that smell in it's tracks!
An early morning SURPISE! Zsa Zsa has a baby
We do not want any animals here to breed, but - since the ducks live in family groups here, there are often pairings, and occasionally a female duck will become broody and create a nest in the duck house. Usually I get the eggs before they have a chance to begin developing, but every once in a while a clever duck will manage to hide an egg and surprise me
Please re-consider releasing balloons
This woman is amazing - please share, and if you can help her
I am Allison from Nebraska & had an unforseen medical emergency & needing help with costs. I'm 43 & have 22 saved cows from slaughter. I'm the only cow Sanctuary in Nebraska. Nebraska the beef state. I don't get much support here as everyone only sees cows as beef & money. Growing up on the other side and selling cows after seeing so many be sold that I'd gotten attached to I decided to make a stand & save them. I do it alone. I'm a unicorn in my state.
I do everything alone. I haul hay, drive tractors, clean pens, fix fence, all their care, I help with vet care. I have no volunteers as many can't do what I need help with and closest are 2 hours away. I live where swift is I'm in the heart of beef country. I also work as much as possible to cover as much of their costs as can which is about half. My days are 5am-10pm at least 365/7 no days off.
Just feeding everyone their costs are $7,200 a month. Big Mama at 26 Is special needs and needs grain daily for adequate nutrition her feed costs are $1,200 a month. HAy is $6,000.. Due to severe drought ongoing multiple years hay is extremely expensive & in short supply. The demand makes it higher & with multiple rich beef farmers & feed lots costs get escalated. $300 per 1,500 bale & they eat 5 bales a week. I also am very picky about their hay so they get best quality grass hay so doesnt cause stomach problems. Their is no grass break this year as not enough rain to grow grass. Jeffrey at 3,200 lbs eats most the hay. Also as hot & dry flies are a bad problem and continually feeding fly control blocks, plus excess fly spray. Blocks are 33 lbs $19 each use 3 a week.
Everything relies on me. I do everything. Right now i can't it was not predicted or planned. I feel helpless and have to ask everyone to help for Their care mainly making sure they have food to eat.
On Sunday 6/25/2023 I went to the er for pain in side ongoing. I went into emergency surgery for appendix about to burst. So had an appendectomy. It's a major surgery required staying in hospital overnight. It is a long recovery. 3 weeks no lifting over 10 lbs, minimal movement except walking. This surgery was emergency A surgery team was called in at 10 pm. I didn't know I'd need surgery & had 0 plans in place beforehand as thought would go home with minimal wrong & told headed to surgery. Now I'm missing a lot of work to cover their costs. I've already missed a week..
Doing everything alone their care & food costs rely on me 100%. I usually can cover half of their food costs & need help with vet & half their food expenses.
This month has already been tough as due to a tragic accident lost beloved Solomon & had Jeffrey get hurt extremely bad. It already about broke me to keep going but I did & ow my own health emergencycould end everything.
I've tried so hard to keep going and do everything alone despite so many things against us. Drought has really hurt in how costly it is to feed. I'm praying now my own unpredicted medical emergency doesn't cause me to have to give up giving them lifelong lives that I've worked so hard for. I've made sure they're taken care of but without me able to work & do all the work I'm having to pay for help like deliver & haul hay. Also im missing around $3,000 in costs i can help provide for them. Need to raise around $2,500 to keep going
We were already struggling & I work hard all day everyday so can keep them & keep going. It's been very frustrating to me as recovery is hard & I've gone from being able to lift a hundred lbs easy to not able to stand up without pain. I'm not sure if I'll have to be off work the whole 3 weeks as everything I do is heavy lifting. If I knew I'd need surgery I could've planned before but didn't know until 10 minutes before. It was my 1st emergency surgery ever. Now as I who provide the most am unable to due to emergency unforseen circumstances I am asking for everyone's help with costs as I'm missing so much work and so because of 1 unforseen thing I don't have to give up what I've worked so hard for. Can you please spare a few dollars so don't have to give up what I've worked so hard to build? To not have to break the promise of giving them long happy lives with their family & best friends. Ive extremelystressed that me not being able to work & cover their costs Ill have to give up which I've worked so hard not to have too. To help ensure they have food, hay, grain, cookies, fly control? Thank you to everyone for any help & support.

I know people love the sight of fireworks but the July 1st Fireworks were terrifying here!
There is a new vacation rental near us with several 'bunkies' and whether it was them or other neighbours, the sound of the fireworks going off was like thunder, over and over. The cattle, horses, ponies, pigs, dogs were cowering and/or shaking. The ducks huddled in their duckhouses. And then there is the local wildlife that suffers...please discourage fireworks and come up with new ways to celebrate July 1st (Canada Day) and July 4th.
If you have ideas for other ways to celebrate - please put them in the comments (only kindness please).
Everyone here at Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary thanks you
Please - ditch the glue traps and please share - these really are awful... :(
Fireworks terrify all kinds of animals - residents here Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary suffer as much as dogs do but are a little harder to comfort...
July 1st fireworks are a huge risk to animals, including those who share your home and please take steps like these to protect them including keeping them at home and only taking them outside on a secure leash.
A beautiful story
Please keep your eyes open for turtles and here is what to do if you find one injured or dead on the road
Or contact YOUR LOCAL TURTLE RESCUE :)
Such beautiful images
Please reconsider fireworks for this weekend. They're very dangerous to wildlife.
Can you help this sanctuary?
Need a bright spot in your day (or maybe a new friend in your life?)

“Imagine if we could go back in time to when we first started farming pigs and put an end to that practice then and there. Because pig farming would evolve exponentially into an industry that would kill (often brutally) 1.5 billion animals each year…
Chances are, most of us would jump on that opportunity to rewind the clock. Now, we’re at this historic crossroads with octopus farming. While certain countries and companies race to open the first octopus farms, scientists, advocates and policy-makers are pursuing action to ban this practice and protect these sentient creatures from the cruel world of factory farming.” – We Animals Media

This video is a celebration of life. Rosie died sometime between night check and morning. She was fine last night, hanging out with Macc who had become not just her son, but also her companion. Jeffie was always nearby of course, and she loved him right up to the end. While we are heart broken, the ‘goal’ of sanctuary is to provide a good life to our residents and for them to die without transport (to slaughter), without terror, and without undue suffering. And from what we could tell, Rosie died quickly, surrounded by her family. So, for that we can be grateful. Rosie arrived in November 2020 after we saw a post in the Association of Farm Sanctuaries about a 14 to 16 year old Jersey cow who failed to get pregnant and therefore was not going to produce milk in the next year. After many years of service to her humans, her options were go to a sanctuary or euthanasia. We invited her here as the first cow resident. She arrived heart broken after losing the herd she had been with for several years, which included her only surviving calf. But, when we rescued Little Macc, and then Barak, her crying stopped. And Jeffie, her surprise baby, born just over a year ago, was the most wonderful addition to her life. He was the first calf in her long life (she was now between 16 and 18 years old) that she got to raise. They were never separated until the moment that she died. That was the best gift we could give her and truly a miracle. Unfortunately, knowing that sanctuary provided Rosie with gifts of family and love doesn’t help with the loss. And poor Jeffie is distraught. He has been crying all day, and searching for her. I have told him that knowing him was the best thing that ever happened to Rosie, but of course, all he feels is the loss…The same loss all those calves and cows in the meat and dairy industry feel…
Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary has a new resident! Felize was rescued by Ina Maria on December 17th (video here was taken at her rescuer's home). This is her story: An activist reached out to Ina Maria to say that a white (domestic/not wild) duck was seen at Lynde Shores Conversation Area. Her wildlife class was doing a field journal assignment and the students went to Lynde Shores and spotted her. Ina has been rescuing Pekins all year. She started heading there every single day, asked about the duck, etc. and could not find or see her. Ina finally gave up and thought - she must have been eaten by someone else. She had first been spotted November 25th!!!! Last Friday, Dec 17th, Ina was feeling really down and decided to go take some photography at her favourite place: Lynde Shores. Ina was there a total of 1 minute when she spotted a white duck!!! Ina had seeds with her for songbirds, and was walking towards them - The little duck was first out of the water, alongside Mallards. Ina decided to move back a bit, to lure the duck. Ina fed her and the mallards a bit further, and then blocked her between a log and the bag of seeds! It took Ina a total of about 3 minutes between spotting her and grabbing her!!!!! (Ina's first Pekin rescue was 12 days LONG!! (Taffy &Tango)). Jenny McQueen reached out to us at Shadowhaven Farm Sanctuary to see if we could take the duck - now named Felize - and we agreed ❤ Felize was brought to us by Critter Cabs Animal Rescue Transport and is now halfway through her 30 day quarantine. Video taken at her rescuer's home 🙂 #friendsnotfood #rescuedducks #farmsanctuary
Want your business to be the top-listed Pet Store/pet Service?
Our first rescue was a 20 year old horse named Shadow who was being auctioned off after her owner passed away. Since then, we have taken in many horses and ponies, dogs and cats and now, pigs and ducks. Many of the animals who live here were given to us by their owners, who wanted them to have the chance to live a better life. Ours is a small sanctuary dedicated to providing the best care that we can to those who join us. We are especially concerned about older animals and hope that our sanctuary will be a haven for them.
