Morning track with Jossan. A little rusty on hard surface but overall she did great. Tracking is one of those things where you cannot just follow a detailed progression plan with different steps and expect to produce a tracking dog. It will always come back to the foundations. Without a strong foundation of reward and search development the dog will just learn a serie of behaviors but will lack the drive to do longer tracks. Especially on hard surface where we see so many dogs with way too low motivation. They should instead spent that time on search development before they did track on hard surface. Or dogs who are used to have a really high number of articles in the start and then end up searching there way forward rather than track.

Chasing games can build motivation, speed and focus, if they are done in the right way. But they can easily also decrease the motivation if they are done in the wrong way.
Some of the most important things when playing chasing games are:
1. Keep the toy close to the dog, both in the start and during movement. That triggers the preydrive and maintains the hope of catching the toy. Close distance creates focus. Big distance allows the dog to focus more on the surroundings and it will ald slow the dog down if he feels that he has no chance to catch the toy.
2. During targeting we teach the dog where to bite on the toy. For example to bite in the Kong and not in the rope. In the beginning we do that by moving the toy in straight lines and present it in a way that makes it more likely that the dog bites on the right place. If the dog bites in the rope, the play stops and we wait for the dog to readjust the grip before we start the play again. After targeting we move the toy in more unpredictable movements to avoid creating patterns. Unpredictable movements will also trigger the preydrive more.
3. Use leash tension at the right moment. It should build the motivation instead of being received as a punishment. Do it with balance and learn each dogs level of resistance to leash tension.
4. Adjust the number of times that the dog misses to catch the toy. Too many misses in a row will decrease the motivation. Try to reward the best attempt. Look for speed and focus.
5. Practice your mechanical skills. The quicker and more coordinated you are, the more motivation you can get from your dog. It will also help you play in a safer way for both you and your dog. There are no better way to train your mechanical skills than through play. It will for sure also help you in all other dogtraining.
Sit and stare - last day to register for our special offer!
A sit and stare indication should be precise and safe. Without enough reward- and search development a sit and stare becomes more of a relaxed sit and will not be very precise. There should be a safe distance between the dogs nose and the hide but you don’t want the dog to back too far away from the hide since that would lead to a lack of precision. The front legs should be locked in the position they were when the dog found the hide. Then you will be able to draw a straight line between the dogs nose and the hide. Both eyes and nose should point on the hide. That is an effect of correct reward placement.

There are two main parts of training a dog to handle distractions. One part is the motivation for the distraction and the other part is the motivation for the task. Trainers tend to focus too much on the distraction and forget about building more motivation and confidence for the task. The training often ends up in a trail and error situation where the dog starts to pay even more attention to the distractions. The dog starts to expect new and strange things to happen everytime they train. At the same time the dog gets less focused on the task. When you see that the dog shows interest of the distractions, don’t forget to build more motivation for the job. When the drive is high enough and the dog knows exactly what to do, the distractions will rarely be a problem, even if they are strong.
In the video our labrador Jossan is searching for a small amount of odor on the ground. The puppies had just arrived from the US and Jossan didn’t yet know them. The reason she can handle their distraction is because she is very confident of her task. Very often I see videos with dogs doing the same thing but looking low or insecure and clearly uncomfortable. Look at HOW your dog perform. Look for focus and intensity. They are signs of confidence and motivation and that is the best recipe for handeling distractions. Exposing the dog for strong distractions without having a strong foundation is just really bad dog training in our opinion.
Tracking foundations with buried hides. Soft start with no hand signal or verbal cue. I let her go when I can hear her nose. That prevents running and hectic starts.

Article indication for tracking dogs
We got a lot of questions about this video and thought it might be a good idea to explain the process more in detail. This is a way to teach an article indication for tracking dogs. We would not use it for detection dogs since they are supposed to indicate on specific target odors and their full indication is trained much later in the training process. A tracking dog should indicate on all items that holds human scent from the person who set the track. That means it can be all kinds of articles with different size and material. Normally we use toy reward also for our tracking dogs but this exercise is for those who have dogs with low motivation for toys or for those who’s struggles with conflicts in their play.
Here we use food in a way that creates a little higher intensity that if we just drop the pieces. We use a lid and place the treat under it. The lid is placed in the position and distance that we want the dog to indicate on later on in the track. The dog quickly learns that the food comes from under the lid and therefore the focus comes naturally on the lid instead of my hands. The most important thing is to initially use a really high reward frequency. The dog should not have time to look up between the repetitions. Charge the lid with a new piece of food while the dog still eats the first piece. That frequency builds up a higher intensity that can compensate a little bit for the intensity you lack from not using toy reward. When the dog can keep the focus on the lid for a few seconds we start to drop the food on the or next to the lid instead. Sometimes we go back to placing the reward under the lid again. In next step we change to another and smaller item, for example a coin. That transition is now easy to do because the dog has a good focus and expects the reward to come from the item or on it. The last step is to add a short search and connect the search with the indication. Now we are ready to use it in the trac
