⭐️⭐️ Impaction Colic ⭐️⭐️

🐴 Colic is a general term for abdominal pain, there can be many reasons for colic signs in the horse and not all are due to a problem with the gastrointestinal tract. The common signs of colic are well-known: quiet demeanour, off food, reduced droppings, flank watching, kicking at belly, lying down and rolling. This is by no means an exhaustive list and most horses will only display a few of these signs. Sometimes the signs are quite mild while other times the horse can be severely affected.

🐴 We have seen a number of large colon impactions recently, likely to be linked to the change in weather. Impactions occur when there is a reduction of water in the colon and the food material dries out, becoming stuck. The most common place for an impaction to occur is the pelvic flexure, this the part of the large colon that narrows as it bends around within the abdomen.

🐴 Signs of an impaction can be very mild, but as it grows the horse will become increasingly uncomfortable. They may go off food and you will notice a reduction in droppings. Diagnosis of an impaction can be made via re**al palpation, if the impaction is in the pelvic flexure then this can generally be felt, although sometimes the impaction can be elsewhere within the gastrointestinal tract and the vet cannot always feel this directly, as the horse’s abdomen is so big.

🐴 Treatment consists of rehydration of the impaction; this is best achieved by passing a stomach tube and giving salt solutions directly into the stomach. This can take many attempts over several days to properly resolve, and severe cases can need hospitalisation. While medical treatment is often all that is required, some impactions do need surgery. If the impaction is severe, it can damage the inside of the colon leading to colitis.

🐴 Prevention is always better than cure. We see impactions when the weather turns wet and cold as horses are suddenly stabled or if water becomes frozen. Any change in management or food should be gradual, but if this is not possible consider the following if your horse is suddenly stabled for any reason:

• Avoid bedding on straw, eating a lot of straw can result in impactions
• Try and walk out a few times a day for in hand grazing if at all possible
• Wet hay and feeds to increase water intake
• Try flavouring the water with cordial, sugar beet or mint to encourage drinking

🐴 Don’t forget to check the water troughs in fields, putting in a tennis ball or similar will help prevent freezing.

Remember - at Avonvale there is a vet available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have any concerns about your horse, do not hesitate to call us - 01295 670501.
