A glimpse of my current garden. I didn't have a good year. I planted these cucumbers about 2-3 weeks ago. They are growing really well with lots of blooms.

I wonder why the beginning area of the plants are turning brown. I know they have had plenty of water. And the soil is good because I have mushrooms growing, which is an indicator that the soil is good.

So far I've picked about 7 cucumbers. One was the size of a football.

Also, I planted squash in there as well. It is growing well. You probably can't see them because of all the cucumber greenery going everywhere.

Thoughts For Today:

I love festivals. It is so nice to see so many festivals coming back to life after COVID.

I feel that festivals offer the community to come together to visit, eat good food that you wouldn't normally eat, and see local vendors offering up homemade goodies.

My Brazilian friend tells me that he thinks they will be having a Brazilian BBQ festival next weekend. Whenever they have had these, the food is delicious and very affordable. I feel that is very important to keep the food prices low so that everyone can afford to get a taste.

Unfortunately, due to inflation, if you visit a festival please don't be shocked by the prices of the vendors. One, the festivals have increased the cost for vendors, and some require the vendors to have insurance (more expense). The vendors go to a lot of effort to have a good presentation and good products.

I visited a couple of festivals and had to be choosy on what I purchased due to the prices. At the very least I try to look at each vendors products and say Hello.

Observations:

1. The Richmond area continues to grow. Henrico County built a big Sports and Event Center. This week they hosted the college Women's A-10 tournament. This is their first major event. Congratulations to Henrico.

2. Henrico County (and maybe the entire area) are hosting the Jefferson Cup soccer tournaments. This event runs every weekend in March for various ages of youth soccer teams.
I heard that many area hotels are booked solid every weekend in March, and this tournament is one of the major reasons.

3. I am looking forward to the Spring festivals. Usually Richmond City has some type of festival every weekend in the Spring.

4. I am also looking forward to planting my garden.

The worm farm is still okay, despite all of the heavy rains that have flooded the area around it.

The only way I can get back to the worms is with an ATV.

We don't need any more rain!!!

One of my ideas is using 55 gallon drums to make a super soil using many lbs of worms. If I start the barrel with 15 lbs of worms, and the worms can eat half their body weight a day, then I can process a barrel of materials in about 4-6 months. NOTE: the worms will be reproducing over that time frame and will probably have doubled in population.

The pictures show my first barrel that I'm doing a test case. I've had it in a storage unit over the Winter. I added 2 heating mats to try to keep the internal temperature close to 70 degrees.

Ingredients: I start off with a good bit of Cow Manure. I then add veggie scraps (lots of Greens that I get from a local store), crushed egg shells, coffee grounds, moistened cardboard.

I started this barrel off with just 3 lbs of worms, but have continually added worms to it.

I drilled holes in the sides to give it air flow, and I noticed it does better without the top screwed on. The worms need air flow IMO.

My plan is to sell the barrels of composted super soil once it is full. There will be lots of worms and cocoons in the soil so the customer can continue to use it for composting and/or adding it to their garden will put thousands of worms in their growing patch.

Next issue for me is that this barrel weighs a ton. I would guess it is well over 450 lbs. So I will need a really good hand truck to move it around. My goal would be to deliver the barrel to the customer, and it they want to reorder, I would drop off another barrel to them and take the empty barrel back to my shop.

I haven't figured out what I would charge. I would deliver the barrel to the customer. I can dump it into their garden if they would like or they can scoop the soil out as they need it.

I went to my "big" worm farm in the country today. It is in a tough area for me to get to due to rain/flooding.

I couldn't believe how many worms are in there. I hand sifted a bunch out that I added to my indoor bins.

I should have TONS of worms in the Spring for sale.

Thank you for LIKING my FB Page. I am so grateful to everyone that is assisting me.

23/01/2024

Wow. Once again, THANK YOU for Liking my FB Page.

I'm hoping to have LOTS of worms ready to sell when the weather warms up. As of now, my outdoor worm farm has a frozen crust on the top. Yet, there are millions of worms down in the warmth of the soil. And I noticed thousands of cocoons in there as well.

My indoor bins have been another experiment. I used 55 gallon barrels and added heating pads to them. Unfortunately, they became too hot IMO. I was digging around in them yesterday and steam was pouring out.

Worm farming is a lot of fun. It is always a learning experience and tinkering with your set up to find a better atmosphere for the worms is challenging due to our weather changes.

Collect and inspect! This full truck of organics diverted from the landfill saves over 700 miles of emissions from driving a standard sedan.

That's a lot of green house gas!

Fall leaves are very useful in the garden! You don't have to bag them and throw them away. When you "leave the leaves" in your landscape, you provide places for wildlife including lizards, birds, turtles, frogs, and insects that overwinter in the fallen leaves, in addition to providing organic matter for your garden!

Leaving fall leaves on your lawn or working them into your garden beds increases soil organic matter content, and it is another way of keeping landscape waste out of the landfill. They also make a great "brown" ingredient in your compost pile. Finally, you can use leaves as a mulch to protect perennials.

Alternatives to bagging fall leaves:
Mulch using a lawnmower and leave on your lawn
Gather and add to compost pile
Till into the vegetable or annual flower bed in fall to provide a source of organic matter
Use as a winter mulch to protect tender perennials

Worm Farm getting a nice new load of mucky cow manure. The worms LOVE cow manure. They will turn the manure into super rich natural fertilizer for your garden.

If you would like some cow manure or even a utility trailer load, please let me know. I can add on a lb or 2 of worms and you will have excellent soil in the Spring.

21/11/2023

We have PLENTY of fresh and aged horse manure and cow manure for sale.

If you have an interest in buying, please let us know.

Small amounts to utility trailer loads available.

Your worms will LOVE this manure.

All Natural Cow Manure Fertilizer. No chemicals or pesticides.

Cow manure is a great all-purpose fertilizer. It's low in nitrogen so it won't burn your tender plants, and has a good balance of nutrients. Additionally, since a cow's four stomachs digest its food so thoroughly, very few w**d seeds make it through!

Cow manure is rich in nutrients and is suitable for plant growth. It has 3% nitrogen, 2% phosphorus, and 1% potassium—3-2-1 NPK, making it the right type of fertilizer for almost all types of plants and crops.

*Manure may contain earthy elements (rocks, grass, etc.)
