One of the huge benefits of Movement Puzzles is growing your dogā€™s independence alongside his confidence! We can make the exercises smallā€¦ and we can make them big! And yes, we are very good at using ā€œequipmentā€ you already have at home šŸ˜‰ Like kitchen chairs!

ā€œLoved, loved, loved this challenge! In addition to the overall fitness and enrichment benefits, I have seen growth in confidence, independence, and grit in both of my dogs, one of which has fear issues. Supportive and timely feedback was great and the schedule worked perfectly to keep the learning progressing for both me and my dogs. I know growing on this challenge to build more movement puzzles will continue to enhance my dogs' lives. Oh, and it was a lot of fun too!ā€

Super cool BONUS module inside Beyond Dog Sports: Dog Walk!

Many agility dogs struggle with different dog walk models. Especially when they train only on one type of dog walkā€¦ and then go competing and are suddenly taken by surprise that the dog walk model at the competition moves differently.

As a result your dog may get scared, slow down, miss the contact zone. And may become generally unsure about getting on the dog walks at competitions.

And the trickiest part is that your dog canā€™t know before getting on the dog walk whether it will move more or less than your training DW.

Which is why weā€™ve included this bonus module inside the course, targeting the "wobbly" DW challenge, including:
āœ… all the progressions from exercises on the ground to the full up plank of the DW
āœ… varying plank movement so that your dog is prepared for dealing with different DW models
āœ… a clear system for checking your dogā€™s readiness for each exercise before you add speed - so that the exercises wouldnā€™t make your dog more scared of the moving planks!

If your dog is feeling unsure on differently moving DW models, then weā€™ve got your back inside Beyond Dog Sports: Dog Walk šŸ˜‰

So that your dog can fly up any DW model like Meri does here with the ā€œwobblyā€ plank!

Registration to Beyond Dog Sports: Dog Walk is open, but only until Thursday 11:59pm ET. Join us here:
https://programs.themovingcanine.com/dw-course-2024/

(Note: this exercise requires several pre-requisite steps before it can be safely done at this height, speed and ā€œwobblinessā€. Please donā€™t try to experiment with this exercise just after seeing this one video clip)

Can you show me a perfect dog walk performanceā€¦ where the dog was struggling on the plank?

You canā€™t.

Because running on a plank is such a fundamental part of the DW performance.

And the DW performance can never be perfect when the dog is misplacing paws off the side of the plank, slows down on the top plank, is struggling to adjust the gaitā€¦ or falls off before even getting to the contact zone!

Being able to run on a narrow plank with speed and precision is a prerequisite for hitting the contact zone.

Itā€™s a prerequisite for performing the DW with confidence.

Itā€™s a prerequisite for performing the DW SAFELY.

Yet, running on a plank is often overlooked in DW training. And I get it - running on a plank may look deceptively easy, almost like walking on fallen tree trunks!

But, in reality, running on a narrow & high plank in the middle of an agility course requires several highly specific skills from your dog.

šŸ‘‰ Like being fully in control of his body when entering the DW from various angles and obstacles and doing it with speed.
šŸ‘‰ Have impeccable reaction speed and balance to stay on the DW even if a misplaced paw does happen.
šŸ‘‰ Move with precision and confidence when high from the ground.
šŸ‘‰ Have excellent dynamic balance and coordination for adjusting gait while running full speed on a high & narrow plank.

Missing any of these skills means that your dog may be misplacing paws on the DW, slowing down or even looking scared on the DW, not to mention slower contact zone learning and having to do even more reps on the full DW!

Is that a risk you are knowingly willing to take?

The painful truth isā€¦ your dog will need to learn these skills anyway.

You canā€™t get a reliable DW performance without your dog mastering these skills first.

And itā€™s up to you whether you wait for your dog to learn them through lumping while you do the contact zone training on full DWā€¦

Or you take full control over your dogā€™s DW training journey and teach your dog these skills separately, away from the contact zone and full DW training.

By joining Beyond Dog Sports: Dog Walk you will make sure that your dog actually has the skills for running on a narrow plank with speed and precision!

ā€œAs a behaviour consultant, I often dealt with dogs struggling with impulsive behaviours and poor decision-making, especially in dynamic situations like agility. Many programmes focused on calmness, which wasn't the primary concern for my clients. It was the dogs' ability to make decisions on the go and control their behaviour in various settings that needed attention. Mari's Movement Puzzles addressed this issue brilliantly.ā€

Hands up if you were also super eager to offer all kinds of new experiences to your puppy, taking the full advantage of the early socialization periodā€¦ and then kind of stopped! šŸ™‹

I know I am definitely guilty of this. In retrospect I realize I even thought that if I did all this novelty stuff with my puppy, then it was done. That now I had the foundation for a confident dog who can tackle any new situation with ease.

While there is some truth to it, itā€™s kind of like assuming that if you and your 3 yo kid walked on a narrow suspension bridge 100ft off the ground once, then that kid will never be scared of heights.

Because socializing with high surfaces is done, right?! We can check that off the list šŸ˜€

Many of my students with cautious dogs already know the value of offering new experiences to their adult dogs.

But if you happen to have a confident dog, then it may not even have crossed your mind to do these ā€œpuppy socializingā€ exercises with an adult dog.

However, offering novel experiences to your dog - and especially novelty in the environment - has some seriously powerful benefits that you really donā€™t want to miss.

Novelty in the environment encourages exploring, it is thought to release dopamine in the brain that is important for motivation, learning and movement.

Novel experiences also facilitate neuroplasticity - the same thing that makes puppy brains so open to new experiences. As our dogs become adults, this window of neuroplasticity and learning becomes smaller.

But it is possible to facilitate higher levels of neuroplasticity in adults, too. And offering your dog new experiences and encouraging engaging with a new and different environment could be one way of accessing that powerful sponge-brain neuroplasticity at a higher age.

Thatā€™s exactly what we do with Movement Puzzles. We aim for different exercise setups and challenges that are new for the dog. We constantly change the exercises, trying to include funny or weird things in our setups, showing our dogs how to engage with these funny things. Or showing new ways to engage with known objects.

Soā€¦ what new experiences could you offer your adult dog today? šŸ™‚

Want to get started with Movement Puzzles?

Comment ā€œ2bowlgameā€ and weā€™ll send you the first exercise!

Movement Puzzles are also perfect for older dogs! They help to engage an older dogā€™s body and mind. Doing coordination exercises like Movement Puzzles is like a vitamin for the brain. Did you know that coordination training can help to delay onset of cognitive decline?

ā€œThese challenges are so well structured and provide a way to progress at a manageable pace. I love a good training loop, and having not done targets in this way before, I have new skills! I've really enjoyed taking part in this challenge; it gave me the structure that I needed to be more consistent. Perfect to keep an old dog moving and engaging both his body and his brain. Stacey's enthusiasm and encouragement was infectious!ā€

And the reason number 6 why we love patterns is that they allow the dog to work more independently, focus on the task at hand, what their bodies are doing, their coordination and precision. Patterns are perfect for any kind of body awareness, proprioception and independent skill work!

Patterns are awesome šŸ˜ Do you agree? šŸ˜›

18/07/2024

Recently, during our free Movement Puzzles training events, we've received quite a few questions about reactivity: people struggling and asking for help with their dogs reacting to other humans, cars, other dogs and different things in the environment during their walks.

It could look like the dogs lunging towards the trigger, trying to escape it, vocalizing on the leash, biting the leash, or other challenging behaviors that you just don't seem to be able to keep under control.

Unfortunately, helping with reactive behaviors directly isn't our and Movement Puzzles' specialty. But it is Kelly Lee's from Dog Kind Training!

Kelly Lee is an honors graduate of The Academy for Dog Trainers where she earned her Certificate there in Training and Counseling (CTC). She holds a BS in Zoology, a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and a masters degree in applied behavior analysis.

Her programs use positive reinforcement, force free and kind training methods - just like ours. So we can fully recommend her to help you with your dog's reactive behaviors.

If you are currently looking for help with your dog's reactivity, then check out Kelly's Reactive Dog Survival Guide. It's an online program and trust me, with her extensive knowledge and experience on the topic, Kelly is far better equipped to help you with your dog's reactivity than I am!

Can you believe that Meggie used to be scared of going under things?! Look at her now happily running under the pool noodles! Pike and Meggie have both come such a long way since starting with Movement Puzzles and trying their first ā€œcrawlā€ exercise! Iā€™m so incredibly proud of them!

ā€œMeggie and I are new to movement puzzles and enjoyed the Crawl challenge very much. She loves this very rewarding, errorless way of learning and has gained so much confidence. Meggie is afraid of feeling trapped and doesnā€™t like anything close to her head.

Not only is she crawling under the table as part of this challenge, now she has also ducked twice already under a low kitchen chair because that happened to be the fastest way to wherever she was running. That had never happened before in her almost 4 years with me!
Your detailed, helpful and always uplifting feedback is wonderfully encouraging to me.ā€

I love walking the talk - following the same advice for my own training as I give to dog handlers.
Thereā€™s nothing better than doing a new and fun coordination exercise and thinking how this fits in with dog trainingā€¦ and how we can include something similar to canine coordination and body awareness training.
When posting videos of my own sessions I often get messages like ā€œThis is great for agility handlersā€ or ā€œEvery person doing sports should also do these exercises!ā€.
That is trueā€¦ but not how I see things.
I donā€™t do this kind of training because I play sports. Iā€™m actually not involved in any sport at the moment.
I do it because it makes me happy, it makes me more comfortable in my own body, I move with more ease and can easily climb a fence if I need to (don't ask me how I know that )
Also, when I'm starting to feel overwhelmed or frustrated by something happening in my life, then all I need to do is a coordination training session and my brain feels a lot happier!
The benefits of physical activity, coordination, balance and movement training are the same for EVERYONE!
It improves mobility and flexibility, it keeps the brain active, improves focus, helps to avoid depression, delays the onset of dementia. It also helps you feel more comfortable and confident in your body! Just to name a few.
These benefits are not only for a sports person to become better at sport.
The benefits apply to everyone and improve quality of life for EVERY individual.
And the same applies to our dogs. Doing physically meaningful activities, coordination and fitness training isnā€™t just for dogs recovering from injuries or dogs involved in sport training.
The benefits (both mental and physical!) apply to every single dog.
Next time you find yourself thinking that doing X or Y exercises look cool, but you or your dog donā€™t really need it because you donā€™t do sportā€¦
Well, think again, because the benefits of physical activity arenā€™t limited to sport - physically meaningful activities are a cornerstone of general well-being (both mental AND physical!)

I actually wasnā€™t that excited about Movement Puzzles.

Yup, you read it correctly. A few years back, when I came up with Movement Puzzles, they seemed like a cool thing to do with my dogsā€¦ But for some reason I wasnā€™t that thrilled with them.

There are so many amazing fitness programs out there and while Movement Puzzles definitely added some new exercises, it just didnā€™t feel fully aligned with me.

However, that changed when I started getting messages from my students, saying that since starting Movement Puzzle training they now notice changes in their dogsā€™ behavior.

šŸ†Dogs were becoming less reactive towards other dogs.

šŸ†Timid and careful dogs relaxed more in new situations and even started exploring the world more.

šŸ†Dogs became more focused and engaged in their training sessions.

šŸ†Agility dogs started working better at a distance from their handlers.

šŸ†And dogs who found the world scary and couldnā€™t go on walks, found a meaningful physical activity they could do indoors.

Movement Puzzles are changing the lives of dogs and their handlers. And thatā€™s exactly what made me fall in love with this concept.

In fact, what started as a fitness training tool for working and sport dogs, is now way more powerful as a training for careful and timid dogs. So that they can enjoy the world, explore with joy and their guardians can have huge smiles on their faces, seeing their sensitive dogs having fun!

Yes, we are still happy to help working and sport dogs, too. But one of our big goals has become to create a program and a community for guardians and their dogs who may be a bit scared of the world, are tackling behavior challenges and canā€™t always attend sport classes or go on outdoor adventures.

And thatā€™s something Iā€™m so, so excited about! Thereā€™s nothing better than helping dogs and their guardians live a more fulfilling life, becoming more confident and empowered in their environments, and having fun! ā¤ļø

Movement Puzzles donā€™t have to be only with bought equipment šŸ˜‰ You can also use the furniture and things you have at home! Like a sofa (as you see in this video - itā€™s part of the narrow space exercise!), chairs and other things!

ā€œThis challenge was great for me and Lady Twister. I just started movement puzzles and doing the exercises and submitting the videos and getting feedback helped us to be successful. I think that I am noticing that Lady Twister is less reactive to things on walks.ā€

Welcome

Hi and welcome!

My name is Mari Valgma. I am a CPCFT located in Tallinn, Estonia. I have been teaching in person canine fitness classes since 2017 to more than 250 students. My main goal has been to make quality focused safe fitness training available in my native language, Estonian.

Next to teaching canine fitness classes, my secret passion is developing coordination exercises for dogs. We ask for such complicated tasks from our dogs. Tasks that require precision and impeccable coordination. At the same time there is very little information on how to prepare our dogs for these tasks. There seems to be a lot of talk about developing body awareness and coordination, but the exercise selection to do that seems to be very limited or accessible only to very skilled handlers. While there are many excellent quality courses for canine fitness training, there are very few focusing on dogā€™s body awareness and coordination skills in a logical step-by-step manner.

When looking at childrenā€™s physical education and sports preparation, we see a lot of focus on developing fine motor skills and coordination. Think of the well known family game Twister, where players are directed to put their hands and feet on different colored spots. And here comes the problem: many coordination skills require us to be able to communicate very clearly what the task is. To human children we can say ā€œPlease put your left foot on the red spot and keep your other foot and hands perfectly stillā€. With dogs it is not that simple and thatā€™s probably the reason why we see such a limited number of coordination exercises.
