Blackberries are ripe early this year! When we were kids, we would pick a whole ice cream bucket full of black raspberries and dewberries growing wild in the woods, sprinkle them with sugar, and gorge on them while playing Atari. Nowadays, I prefer these beauties picked right here in my yard in a Blackberry Bourbon Mash or cobbler.

Most of my posts are about bees or edible plants in our yard, but we still have room for beauty on our quarter acre: lilies, daffodils, bleeding hearts, roses, irises, azaleas, phlox, dahlias, sunflowers, goldenrod, hydrangeas, and Peonies!

I love it when family can get in on the act! We were called to capture bee swarms two days in a row at my niece's school. My sister suited up to assist and my niece's class observed at a safe distance while I provided some educational narration on bees. The first swarm in a tree was quickly captured prior to dismissal. The second one on the picnic table happened after hours and I was able to take my time, capture the queen and watch the bees march in to join her. Thank you school administrators for calling a beekeeper to save the bees!

A clothes line....every farm needs one! Of course on 1/4 Acre Farms ours has to be scaled down. I picked up this antique beauty Cordomatic so I can reel it in when I want to use the same space for a hammock. It's at least enough to bring back memories of hanging clothes out on the big farm.

BEE SWARMS - Now that spring is here, just a friendly reminder...this is what a bee swarm looks like. This is how a bee colony propagates. Please don't approach, spray, or harass them - parts of our food chain depend on bees. If you want them removed call a beekeeper - send us a PM and we will come get them at no charge and give them a new home.

Hello ladies 🐝 on this warm December day. You've made it through the cold so far but winter's still not officially here. You're still preparing, even finding pollen.

Tomatoes Free To a Good Home:
Volunteers, I love them. The ones you didn't plant but grew anyway, which especially happens when you've been gardening in the same place for years. These are the gritty, determined ones and I have a hard time pulling them. So there are volunteer tomatoes by my mailbox for the taking.

It was a busy spring saving the bees! The best part was our kids getting in on the action. On our bike ride home from school we came upon a bee swarm just beginning to form - what are the chances? Our youngest got to watch while the bees settled into a heart shaped swarm. Our oldest also got to assist on an emergency swarm capture at a high school. Never a dull moment!

Thank you Triad High School and Kenny Deatherage for calling a beekeeper and saving the bees! This was the most fun swarm catch I've done all year. My daughter Julietta Marini got to do her first assist in front of quite a crowd. The bees cooperated and we got them in a box just before the dismissal bell - no pressure!

Thank you Albert Cassens Elementary for inviting me to Garden Club this week. What a fun time teaching kiddos about bees! They had some great questions and comments and were very engaging. Such a good program to develop student interest in gardening and nature.
