Einstein found a pinkie....
I had thawed a pinkie mouse for the corn snake and had it sitting off to the side. Einstein was eating while I was prepping others food and such, well she happened to find the pinkie and grabbed it. So I let her play with it for a few seconds and she actually managed to bite the nose off.....she's got some powerful jaws. Pinkies are still a bit to big for her, we also refer to avoid feeding mice and rats since they're not overly healthy. However that's not to say we don't give them once in a blue moon as a treat. For the record Einstein did not eat the pinkie I did remove it, but she did enjoy playing around with it. I may have to get her a mouse cat toy to play with.
She had some blue tongue skink and tegu food today by zoo med. Along with her chick, quail, salmon, gizzards and vitamin and calcium. She did not get an egg today since she had one yesterday, we try and avoid to much as it can lead to fatty liver disease.
Einstein generally sits in a bin for her feedings while I prep other feedings , it's become our routine. That way I can keep an eye on her eating but also get everyone else's food ready for that day also. Einstein takes quite a bit longer to eat then most her age. It was really time consuming to sit and feed her and then go do the others. So I've found a way to make things a little quicker. She's growing at a steady rate, not as fast as the average tegu but she's growing steadily. She has maxed out my little scale, but isn't big enough for th next scale up....so had to order a new scale.
53 days old- cleaning and covering Einstein's head
Einstein is really coming along. Everyday he's doing more and more. He has started digging and wanting to burrow to sleep at night. So we've shredded some paper towel, I'm a little nervous to use any substrate at this time. We will be going back to the vet in a few weeks and see what they say then about some soft moss. I am just a little worried about any possible pieces that are dry or hard and poking him in the wrong spot..he is walking much better, still has a funky crocodile walk tho lol.
We've started using Vaseline to keep his head moist and not dry out. Just a little video on how we have been applying it. We do put a big glob on, as well as clean it and replace multiple times a day. There is a protective membrane but we want to prevent any possible infection from starting. I am still so amazing at how well he has been doing. He's been growing nice, little slower than his brothers but still going forward. He seems to be more and more active and alert each day, he is not a morning tegu. He doesn't like the mornings very much and is crank when we have to wake him to clean and cover his head.
Also I want to note that I do not have a black eye....I don't know why it looks that way but I promise I don't. :)
Einstein day 51
A little video from this morning. Einstein has been trying to dig and burrow under the paper towels. He has a little difficulty walking on the paper towel, his nails get caught up a bit. But he is walking more and more straight everyday. I was using my fingers on his side's like training wheels almost, but he's really improving every day that be goes by. He truly is something special, we will take everyday that we are given with him as a blessing.
I want everyone to know, that if he was in any pain or couldn't eat or drink on his own we wouldn't make him stay alive. We only want a good life for him, and just because he needs a little extra doesn't mean he doesn't have a good life.
We would NEVER force something to stay alive if it was in constant pain or did not have a good quality of life. However at this time Einstein is just special needs. He is not in pain. He eats, drinks, uses the bathroom, walks, huffs and puffs when mad, digs in the paper towel (due to his head he does not have substrate ) and everything any other tegu baby would do....just a little different.
We want to thank everyone for there support and for your continued support with Einstein. We will continue to do follow up posts and videos. I do apologize for the minimal at this time, we have finally got moved into our new place...it has been a rough move, I also need to get something to hold my phone while recording. I'm looking at a new camera and tripod here in the very near future. Any suggestiong on what to get leave below. :)
