Researchers recorded the brain waves of 16 dogs who experienced either a “good day” or a “bad day.” Good days included activities like being petted and playing fetch, while bad days involved brief separations from their owners or being tethered to a door.

After a three-hour nap, the stressed dogs showed poorer sleep quality and woke up earlier than their relaxed counterparts. Interestingly, stressed dogs also fell asleep faster, a phenomenon researchers described as “stress-induced sleep.”

New research out of the United Kingdom suggests that the smell of human stress affects dogs’ emotions as well as their decisions, leading them to make more pessimistic choices.

The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, was the result of a partnership between the University of Bristol, Cardiff University and the British charity Medical Detection Dogs.

It involved putting humans in the hot seat and then putting sweaty rags and food bowls in front of more than a dozen dogs to see how they would react to the scent of stress. 🐶❤️
