(1)

I began working with dogs 39 years ago, when I volunteered helping train police man-trailing bloodhounds. Today, my passion is training dogs for human scent detection, protection work, and advanced / competition obedience for Sirius K9 Academy, a business that I started over 25 years ago in Yorba Linda, CA. I specialize in working-line German & Czech Shepherds, as well as Rottweilers, Doberman Pin

chers, Belgian Malinois, and Dutch Shepherds. I am available for Board and Train (Basic / Intermediate / Advanced Obedience, Remote Collar Off Leash Work, and Distraction / Socialization / Environmental Work) in Orange County, CA and in Flagstaff, AZ. I also teach many obedience classes as well as protection training in Orange County, CA and obedience classes in Flagstaff, AZ. I am a graduate from the Tom Rose School of Dog Training located in St. Louis, MO, the most prestigious school of its kind in the United States. I obtained my Master Dog Trainer certification in 1990 after a one year stay at the school, specializing in training police and narcotics detection dogs. Louis, I also enjoyed competing in Schutzhund trials, and I even certified as a DVG-agitator, being one of only a few women at the time in the entire U.S. to attain this certification. I volunteered my time training dogs for Support Dogs, Inc., an organization devoted to helping the physically handicapped, as well as trained and handled dogs for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program at local schools while attending School. My favorite past time however while in St. Louis, was training and handling K9s to find narcotics inside homes and businesses for Scentry Consulting, Inc. During the past 35 years, I have instructed thousands of classes, have done countless private lessons, and I have boarded and trained over two hundred client dogs at my home. I have taught hundreds of seminars in K9 obedience, protection, remote collar training, K9 safety classes, decoy training, and narcotics and explosive K9 detection work. I have also presented numerous K9 demonstrations for local schools, for local TV shows, and have done several demos at the Orange County Pet Expo for thousands of spectators. I am an Expert Witness and consultant for several insurance agencies, attorneys, as well as for a city in Orange County, CA. I am an evaluator for several local animal shelters, and I work with many rescue organizations. I use Balanced Training methods. This means that I use a training collar (which is appropriate for the dog's breed, temperament, personality, and age) to reinforce all of their new formal obedience commands and to correct negative behavior, as well as toy / tug play and treats to motivate and reward them (as well as A LOT of praise.) I also like to start fresh with brand new commands (preferably in another language) with all the dogs that I work with so that they have formal (working) commands for when they are in public, as well as informal (non-working) commands in English for around the house. This always works out really well for both my clients and their dogs. My client's dogs are so well trained, that many movie and TV producers contact me regularly for dogs to be in their movies and on TV. One of my client dogs was even in many episodes on a TV show and several of my client's dogs were chosen to be on a popular band's album cover. I am extremely proud of all of my clients and love working with them and helping their dogs attain their full potential. More About Me
My experience also includes being an instructor at Pro-Train in San Diego, where I assisted in educating students from around the world to become professional dog trainers. I was also the lead trainer and a handler for one of the largest security K9 companies in Southern California. Local Police Agencies used my K9 Kilo and myself on major incidents when they needed a K9 team. My dog Kilo and I were also one of only three K9 teams in California requested and used for a violent union strike lock-out in Ohio. I retired as the Training Director for the Orange County Working Dog Association (OCWDA) in 2004 where I was the Founder and Training Director for several years and instructed over one hundred handlers in protection K9 training, area and building searches, and advanced obedience. I have written many articles which are posted on my website (siriusk9training.com) and on the Sirius K9 Academy FB page (https://www.facebook.com/SiriusK9Academy/ ) and I also have been featured in several newspaper and magazine articles, including "Training Secrets for the German Shepherd" Article: "Pack Facts" page 87 - 93 Vol 16, and even a magazine in Japan regarding my experience and knowledge in training dogs. I worked as a Veterinary Technician at a large veterinary hospital in Oklahoma for several years before becoming a professional dog trainer. I have competed in many K9 trials and have always been in the top three at every competition that I have entered with dogs that I raised from a puppy and trained myself. I currently have one dog named Torro. He is a 8 year old, 103 lb, bi-color German Shepherd male (from 100% East DDR Working Lines) which I have trained for Search and Rescue work as well as many other things. I am Czechoslovakian and speak it fluently. I have an extensive background in security and law enforcement. Besides training and working with Torro, I enjoy hiking in the mountains, paddle-boarding & kayaking with him, nature and animal photography as well as astrophotography (I have a page, YouTube page, and a website just for my love of photography. My photography FB page is https://www.facebook.com/caroline.haldeman.1216571329740?mibextid=ZbWKwL) You will see links to my other photography sites there. I also enjoy competitive swimming, as well as competing in triathlons, doing obstacle courses, and mud runs. I am currently pursuing a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.

Keeping "Joy" entertained and happy while she is boarding with me... 😃 Her stay is halfway done as of today.
I have been rotating each day with either a bunch of jolly balls of various sizes (shown in the previous photos I posted of her here), a herding ball (what she is playing with in this video and pictured in these images), or I have been using a flirt pole to exercise her. But she broke the flirt pole that her owners gave me this week (the line broke), so she is doing more with the herding ball now which she loves. She is really talented with it too, she will bring it to me wherever I go! 😃🥰

You may recognize her, I had her for training 4 yrs ago.
I picked her up yesterday in O.C. She will be with me for 3 weeks while her owners are on a 3-week cruise around Rome.
Yes! We also do just boarding for our board and train alumni! 🥰

Had a busy weekend!
Taught several classes and did some follow up lessons with Board and Train clients. I also set up a CGC practice test for several clients which was so good for the dogs and the handlers.
Below are some image excerpts from this weekend ❤🥰

This is Meeka at the end of her weeklong off leash training.
I had Meeka for two weeks during this second stay with me. The first week I worked on fixing her heel position because she would always try to walk ahead of her owners, and also wouldnt pay much attention to them (focus on them when they worked with her.) Additionally, she also looked flat and like she wasnt enjoying training very much when I watched her in my classes with her owners. So, I worked a lot on making training fun for her as well!

Today was the final day of Meeka's two-week training with me. Here are some images of her that I took for her owners. Sh...

"Wat tis orang ting? It taysts so goud!"
I always give my boy a big carrot after dinner, have since he was a puppy, he absolutely loves them. On this rainy day and evening, I gave one to Meeka also after dinner... and she really likes it! (She has a big piece in her mouth in the photo.) She's so dang cute! ☺️

Advanced Off Leash Training
When I get client dogs that have completed the basic level of training, the clients can choose what they want me to work on when I get them for training (board and train.) Faith has completed both the basic and intermediate obedience levels, so after speaking with her owners and watching them handle her in my classes, they asked me to work on: Longer distance recalls, plus fix her sit front position after the recall (she wouldnt sit straight right in front of them after being recalled), long distance long stays (she would break her short distance stays after short periods so I had to fix that and then add on distance and length of time staying), her heeling position (she would always forge - walk ahead of her owners), work on her focus during heeling around distractions (she never looked at her owners when they heeled her unless they had a ball in their hand), to be able to recall her after they threw a ball for her to retrieve, and to also reinforce all of this off leash on a remote collar.... and do all of this within 2 weeks' time!

Off Leash Control In Public
So many of our clients tell us that they want their dog to be able to be off leash in public and listen to them when we ask what their goals are at the start of training. But the majority of them have no idea how much training needs to be done to get to that point. We are amazed (and saddened) that so many people stop their dog's training after just our basic class, or even worse, they dont even finish the class with their dog and it is the lowest level of formal obedience training that we offer. It would be equivalent to stopping school around the 8th grade for us humans. Imagine how far you would get in life with just that amount of schooling under your belt? Well, the same goes for your dog. The more time you invest in their training the better their future will be and the more you can do with them and enjoy them! (Like being able to control them off leash at home and in public with no treat or toy in your hand.)
In the video below is Faith, a 2 1/2 yr old black Czech Shepherd. I had her once prior for Intermediate training. This time, I had her for two weeks and I worked on her heeling position and focus with distractions, long distance stays and recalls, as well as her off leash control. This is a video clip of her heeling in public with me while she is off leash.

More play when training!
When I work with clients, I watch the dog and look to see if the dog is HAPPY while working for its handler... is the dog having fun? Or is the dog BORED?! 😉
I think people way underestimate the power of incorporating toy / tug play into their training sessions while working with their dog. I think people rely too much on treats to reward their dog because its simply just 'very easy to do' - it takes very little effort on their part. If your dog loves to play with a ball and/or loves to play tug, why not use THAT to motivate them to work for you and make it a lot more fun for them (and you)? They are getting great exercise (and you as well :) ) and your dog has less chance of getting loose stools or gaining weight from too many treats! There is nothing wrong with using treats when training your dog, treats definitely have a place in dog training, especially with pups, in the beginning of training, and to reinforce certain behaviors, but at some point, you want to get away from using them as you and your dog progress out in public. I see such a huge change in dogs when their owners start using a lot more tug / ball play while working with their dogs, the dogs are much happier, upbeat, focused on them, and are more motivated to work for them. There are many times when a dog wont take treats because they are too stressed, dont have high food drive, or are just "full", but you whip out a tug toy or a ball and BAM, they are on it! In this video, I wanted to show Meeka's owners how by incorporating tug play into her training, she is much happier, more focused, more confident, and a lot more motivated to work. 🥰

This is Faith, a 2 1/2 yr old German Shepherd.
I picked up Faith after I dropped off Echo and taught several classes in O.C. I had Faith a year ago for training while her owners went on vacation. They are on vacation for two weeks right now, so I have her again.
One of the things they asked me to work on was her heeling and focus (which was Horrible at my Field Trip class last Sunday, she was constantly walking ahead of her owner and not paying any attention to him.)
This is her heeling and focus with me after just 4 days...

I taught several classes this weekend in O.C., here is an excerpt from my Field Trip Class.

I love working with individuals that are dedicated to their dog's future and to attaining their full potential. ❤

I taught several classes this weekend in O.C., here is an excerpt from my Intermediate Obedience Class.

I really love working with all these guys and gals because they are invested in their dogs, they didnt stop training their dogs after the Basic level like so many other dog owners do! They realize the importance of continuing their training and that it is a long-term commitment! ❤

Echo's basic training is complete, he goes home tomorrow. Here are some final images that I took of him.
