Cleaning out the old coop for the last time. Things were a little worse for wear in here while the new coop was being built. Now on to brain storming new uses for this space!! Rabbits? Indoor garden space? What are your ideas?

Growing up I watched ALL the extended edition Lord of the Rings; including director, editorial and cast commentary. At one point, the editors were discussing how long it took them to decide on how green to make the grass in the Shire and how blue to make the skies. It was supposed to look lush but not fake. It had never occured to me that this is not exactly how the world looks. Today I am struck by how beautiful my hometown is and that editors agonized for hours on how to make a place look just like this.

Love watching this meadow expand every year. We decided to leave our front acre and orchard space as a "no mow" zone three years ago. Every year, new flower and grass species pop up along with toads and other small creatures that take shelter in the shade. Originally this started as a way to help our native bees in the early spring/summer and it has turned into one of my favorite places on our property!

Eggs, eggs, eggs! Lots of eggs for sale! $3/doz or $2.50 for returning customers with egg cartons to return. With the rain this week, eggs had to be washed due to some extra mud and yuck. Message for me for pickup!

So excited that this gorgeous Mama made a nest and is sitting on a clutch of eggs! Runner ducks usually do not have a broody season which makes this extra special for our homestead. Fingers crossed for some gorgeous little ducklings in a couple weeks!

We ❤️ our bats!

We ❤️ our bats!

Ever stop to think about the unsung heroes of the night sky? Pennsylvania bats are incredible allies in the fight against pesky insects that cause disease and kill crops.

Our bats eat a lot of insects! In fact, the little brown bat can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes an HOUR!

But humans are their greatest threat in the form of highway mortalities, wind farms, introduced disease, and disturbances while hibernating.

On this show these sky puppies you care by giving them the opportunity to thrive. Here are a few things you can do to help bats:

🦇 Learn about bats and respect their place in nature. You may be surprised to learn the fears surrounding bats are often myths.
🦇 Place a bat box to provide a place for bats to rest and raise their pups.
🦇 Create a garden to help attract insects that pollinate plants and feed bats.
🦇 Give this post some “love.” Show you appreciate our bat biologists working hard to conserve our bats. In fact, Pennsylvania biologists are leaders in bat research and have developed a tool to identify white nose syndrome (UV light) that is used across the WORLD for disease surveillance.
🦇 Share this post to show others you care about bats!

If you have bats in your home, call the Pennsylvania Game Commission at 1-833-PGC-WILD, and we can provide information to help you remove the bats humanely and safely. Never touch a bat.

When we got our Bernese Mountain Dog, Iris, I was fairly confident that we would be able to train her as well as our labs. Then I realized that it is so much more difficult to train a dog that doesn't do absolutely anything for a treat. I'm reminded of their stark breed differences every morning for breakfast 😂

Found this little guy in our feed this afternoon after the eclipse. Placed it safely in the rafters of the barn and crossing our fingers that the cats don't notice!
