Ashfall & your animals

Updates on Mt Spurr volcano : https://avo.alaska.edu/

Volcanic ash is VERY abrasive. Protect eyes and mouth for all people and critters.

While ash is falling: Keep animals in an enclosed area, cover exposed feed and water. Protect normal feeding surfaces from ash. Consider if a fly mask may work for your animals.

Afterwards: DO NOT FEED ON ASH, or allow ash to be consumed or inhaled. Do not allow access to contaminated water.

Horse Blankets!
Use a high gram fill and high denier for Alaskan Winters.
Layer liners, stable blankets and turnouts for optimum insulation and protection.
Add a fleece liner for the coldest of cold snaps.
Check blankets daily and immediately replace any iced-up blankets.
Shivering horses need blankets, wind protection and possibly more food.
Horses that may need more help staying warm: elderly horses, young horses, hot blooded horses (Arabian and thoroughbred), sick horses, donkeys, mules, and horses new to Alaska.
