At the heart of Dr Abigail Pinnock’s award-winning work lies a lifelong commitment to animals, and this dedication recently earned her the prestigious title of Best Veterinarian at the True Pet Industry Awards.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) honoured furry hero police service dog Max and his dedicated handler, at the Border Security Branch Conference held at the Police Officer’s Club in Kingston on October 30. The JCF is proud to recognise Max’s contribution to public safety. His dedication and bravery inspire both humans and canines. This two-year-old Belgian Malinois Shepherd, who is handled by Constable Shavar Manning, has proven to be an invaluable asset to the Constabulary.

He played a crucial role in multiple successful operations that have led to the discovery of illegal fi****ms and narcotics.

Some of his achievements thus far include the recovery of a submachine gun, his detection of this gun led to the subsequent recovery of a JCF Ballistic Vest, uncustomed ci******es, and a large quantity of suspected g***a. He has also assisted in the seizure of a Smith and Wesson 9mm Pistol that was hidden in a bucket that was buried underground and the seizure of a G***k 19 Pistol.

This remarkable partnership between a dedicated officer and a courageous canine is a testament to the invaluable role that animals can play in law enforcement. Max’s story is a reminder that even the smallest of creatures can make a significant impact on the world.

When 68-year-old Debbie Lightheart, winner of the True Pet Food’s Choice Award for Outstanding Contribution, migrated from Canada to Jamaica 30 years ago, the former security company operator never imagined she would take up veterinary services.

In the last 10 years, Lightheart has facilitated the spaying and neutering of more than 10,000 dogs in the parish of Westmoreland with donations from her friends, businesses, hoteliers, and strangers.

AS a child , Sabria Hector developed a passion for animals, often rescuing and caring for those abandoned.

“I had hamsters as a little girl, then eventually a turtle, then a dog, then a rabbit, then a cat, and a couple of birds I tried to rescue here and there. The only one I still haven’t had yet is a snake. But I’ve rescued and fostered tonnes of kittens and puppies, especially in the last four years,” Hector shared.
