Let me introduce you to Phil, Phillip when he’s in trouble. His actual name is Horace because his brothers name is Jasper, after the dog thieves from 101 Dalmatians. But seriously, who wants to scream “Horaaaaace” at the top of their lungs when calling their dog? The neighbors will think we are calling them a “whore ass”.
Phil’s story.
Back in March of 2021, after the death of our beloved boxer, Bruce, we felt that our hearts just couldn’t do senior dog rescue this time around. Too many losses to quickly;( Bruce had a brother we lost soon after named Campbell, cus Bruce Campbell RULES!! So we decided upon a pup, named Jasper, who we got through dear friends of ours litter. Phil is his littermate but he went to another home at first. Bad things and horrible humans happened to Phil;( Our friends found out about his mistreatment and repossessed him and placed him us, reuniting him with his actual brother. He had some dumb name after the singer from Korn, but…. No. Phil it was.
Phil has problems haha. A whole host of them. The people said he was “aggressive”. He’s not. He’s traumatized. He showed us his scary face on day three and BOY was it scary. We didn’t know what to do. After an awful night o reached out to every rescuer in my arsenal and one sent an Angel our way. John Parrett is a dog trainer that owns K Leadership Services. He saved the day and showed us that Phil had no desire to bite, he just wanted his space because humans were untrustworthy to him. The only way he knew to do that was make his scary face. On top of his mental trauma he was 30 pounds underweight with a horrible bladder and ear infection. He had to wear a diaper at first even;(
Fast forward through lots of hands on and patient training and we have come to love and adore our weird dog haha. He doesn’t make scary face too often, only when he’s eating. It’s not food aggression, people hurt him when he was eating before. It’s the only explanation. He stops eating and growls at his food because he’s scared of it.
Everyday Phil comes more and more out of his shell, but I think he’ll always be a chickensh*t, and that leads me to his art. Phil doesn’t like to wander far from us, sometimes getting him out the door is tricky in itself, he doesn’t like to cross thresholds. They make him nervous. So when we go out back to smoke and let the dogs go… he almost always immediately whiz’s two steps out of the door. But do you think he stands still while he’s doing it? NO!! No, he walks around and makes ART!!
So this page exists to celebrate a dog that survived the worst, whose loved and adored for all his idiosyncrasies, with occasional antics from his exuberant brother Jasper.
Also, this page will be used to occasionally highlight some amazing animal rescuers I know and their rescues. Any chance to highlight amazing people doing good things for critters is another animal saved!!
If Phil’s p*e can help fund rescues in anyway, so be it!!
