The puppies always want to be where I am or where their mom is. They will beg to get out of their crated area And as soon as I let them out, they follow me back in because they just want to be with their hooman. Here is an adorable video of them begging for their moms attention.

pups’ first time outdoors! As they enter this new environment they will be introduced to many different scents, smells, textures and even different opportunities to problem solve! I love watching their little minds grow during these new experiences! Watch here as they aren’t sure if they should enter through the sliding door, slowly they begin to recognize that they can go through the door and what ensues is a puppy pawty full of enriching experiences!

POTTY TRAINING! When puppies turn 2-3 weeks old their cleanliness instincts turn on. At Stage Gulch Goldens we love to take advantage of these natural instincts and begin potty training! Because the pups are so little and do not move very far, we try to keep the potty area very compact, this helps the puppies learn to potty in the potty area much more quickly!

I have tried implementing the potty training at different ages and I must say that the younger I start them, the more consistent they are by the time they’re ready to go to their new homes! By the time our puppies go home at 8 weeks old they are almost completely potty trained, this always amazes me! These pups are so smart!!

Did you know why mama’s lick their puppies?

When puppies are born their mama licks them vigorously to remove the placenta and to stimulate breathing. Because newborn pups are blind, deaf and helpless the puppies are completely dependent upon their mama for the first couple weeks of their lives. Caring for her puppies includes helping them defecate and urinate. Puppies are unable to do this on their own and the licking helps stimulate the reflexes to help the puppies potty.

Licking also creates a bond between mama and her pups and allows her to know the scent of her pups. The puppies love being cared for by their mama and always instinctively crawl towards her when she enters the whelping pen!

I always love seeing mama lick her babies, itreassures me that she is a good mom and that her pups will be well cared for!

Our puppies are almost 4 weeks old and they’re in their sensitive period! This is the most important developmental time of their life!

The sensitive period often leaves long term effects and it is when the puppy begins to actually learn new things! It’s also the period when puppies begin to develop neural connections that produce long term memory. During this time their brain grows at a rapid pace! 🐶
During this period we begin to introduce the pups to sounds, objects and various activities so that the pups can begin to become familiar with the world and learn what is safe and what is not. This happens to be my favorite period!
