ack. The Yorkshire terrier's most notable feature is its coat, which is long, fine and straight. The hair is a steel blue color on the body and tail, and elsewhere it is tan. The tail is usually docked to half its natural length. Long hair on the top of the head is another characteristic feature and is often tied up with a ribbon, giving the dog a jaunty appearance. Personality:
The Yorkshire terrier's small size belies its true personality, which is energetic, feisty — and domineering. Yorkies are affectionate, but they also want lots of attention; the breed is a good choice for someone who wants to dote on a dog. Yorkshire terriers make excellent watchdogs. But they can be snappy toward other children if not treated respectfully or gently. Some might also be aggressive toward other small animals, but some Yorkies live quite peacefully with other dogs and even cats. Yorkshire terriers can be barkers, but it is possible to train them not to bark excessively. Some can also be stubborn about house training. 1. They Got Their Name During the Development of Yorkshire, England Much of the early development of the Yorkshire Terrier breed took place in Yorkshire, England. Because of that, the breed took on the name Yorkshire Terrier in 1870. Although Yorkies were first registered with the British Kennel Club in 1874, it was not until 1885 that they were recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC).

2. Yorkies Are Great Watchdogs Yorkies are small, so they generally will not scare away intruders on their own, their great sense of hearing allows them to hear visitors long before the people get to the door. They can then alert their owners of potential intruders. Unfortunately, what the dog views as an intruder or unwelcome visitor could really be a friend or other welcomed guest. Because of this, the dog’s barking can get excessive. To prevent the dog’s barking from bothering your neighbors and to avoid getting annoyed with your dog yourself, if you have a Yorkshire Terrier, it should be trained when not to bark.

3. Yorkies Were First Bred as Working Dogs Because of Their Small Size Although Yorkies are now generally considered companion dogs, they were originally bred to catch rats in clothing mills. Because of the Yorkies’ close association with weavers working in mills, comments were sometimes jokingly made about how the Yorkies’ fine, silky coat was a product of the looms.

4. One of the Most Famous World War II Dogs Was a Yorkie Smoky, a Yorkie, was found by an American soldier in the jungles of New Guinea in February 1944. Another American, Corporal William A. Wynne, bought the dog and Smoky quickly became Wynne’s companion. She accompanied him on missions and at times saved the lives of the troops, warning them of the approaching enemy and other dangers before the troops could even hear anything coming. Because Smoky was not an official war dog, she did not qualify for rations or the medical care given to official war dogs. Instead, Wynne would split his rations with Smoky. She is also quite possibly the first therapy dog. She would go on rounds with the nurses at a hospital in New Guinea to try and lift the spirits of the injured and dying soldiers. She continued her work as a therapy dog even after WW II. Perhaps one of Smoky’s greatest accomplishments was running a telegraph wire through a 70-foot pipe that had only an 8-inch diameter. Wynne tied the wire to the dog’s collar, and she ran it through the pipe to the other side. What Smoky did in only a few minutes would have taken hundreds of men several days to accomplish, thereby putting the men’s lives in danger during the process. Because of Smoky’s accomplishments, there are several memorials erected in her honor, both in the United States and elsewhere.

5. Yorkies Have Held Records for the Smallest Dog Many Times Sylvia, a Yorkshire Terrier, died in 1945 at only two years old. At the time, she was 2.5 inches tall at the shoulder and 3.5 inches from tip to tail. She weighed only four ounces, making her the smallest dog in recorded history. Other Yorkies have held the Guinness World Record for the smallest living dog. This includes Big Boss, who at 4.7 inches held the record from 1995 to 2002. Prior to that, another Yorkie, Thumbelina, had held the record at 5.5 inches tall and 8 inches long. By comparison, Yorkshire Terriers are typically about 3-7 pounds, although a healthy Yorkie could weigh even slightly more than that. They are also generally about 6-9 inches tall.

6. Yorkie Puppies and Adults Have Different Coloring Yorkie puppies are born black and tan. As the dog matures into an adult, the black will change to blue, which is basically a diluted black or shiny silver color. The tan will transition into gold, a richer tan color. The Yorkie has genes unique to the breed, which will cause this change. The transition generally starts at about six months old and will usually be complete by the time the dog is about one or two, although it may take up to three years for the color change to be complete.

7. Audrey Hepburn Made Yorkies a Popular Celebrity Dog Choice

Audrey Hepburn helped to introduce Yorkshire Terriers to the celebrity world when Mr. Famous, her first Yorkie, joined her in the spotlight. Her dog was on magazine covers and even in a scene in “Funny Face” with her. By bringing Mr. Famous into the spotlight, Hepburn really made Yorkies a popular companion in life as well as a popular photography companion.

Living With:
Because they are so small, Yorkshire terriers do not need a lot of room to exercise. They also can be paper trained; consequently, they make great apartment dogs, but they also enjoy walks outdoors.
Yorkshire terriers shed little, but their coat requires regular care to keep it in good shape and looking nice. If clipped, combing or brushing at least weekly is required. If the coat is kept long, many more hours of grooming are needed and some professional trimming from time to time, too.
The breed is sensitive to cold and prone to chills, so Yorkies need to be protected from bad weather. If walked outside when it is chilly, a dog coat is in order.

History:
The Yorkshire terrier was developed in Yorkshire, England during the Victorian era. The breed is thought to descend from several other terriers including the Maltese, black & tan Manchester, and Dandie Dinmont terrier as well as some breeds that are now extinct such as the Clydesdale terrier.
Other historical information about the breed is uncertain or conflicting. Some believe the dogs were bred by working men in Northern England who could not easily keep large dogs, yet wanted a feisty companion. Other reports say the Yorkie was developed for catching rats that infested mine shafts and as a dog to enter badger and fox burrows. Yet another theory is that Scotsmen working in Yorkshire wool mills developed the breed.
The original Yorkshire terriers were larger than those of today. Through selective breeding, the dogs were miniaturized and became a dog that was fashionable to own. In the United States, the breed first appeared in shows during the late 1800s. Today, the Yorkie is primarily a pampered companion and lapdog

Yorkshire terrier puppy facts

Between their Rapunzel-like hair and bossy personality, Yorkie puppies will fit right into a highly entertaining household. Here are some important Yorkshire terrier facts to get you started:

Size Small: Adult Yorkshire terriers weigh approximately 7 pounds and grow to a height of 7-8 inches.

Breed Characteristics: For such a small dog, the Yorkshire terrier is well-proportioned and walks with a look of confidence. The rich bluish-grey and tan coat is naturally straight and hangs from the head and evenly off the body. Their coat is hypoallergenic.

Temperament: Though dainty-looking, toy dogs often come with a big personality. A favorite among city dwellers, Yorkies thrive in apartments and big-city living, as long as they have a calm and pleasant residence to come home to. They can even become quite the watchdog if needed.

Grooming and Health Needs: A Yorkshire terrier’s coat sports hair rather than fur. Like human hair, it needs to be brushed daily to keep its illustrious shine and should be washed and trimmed when needed. Unchecked, a Yorkie’s hair can grow longer than two feet!
Not just a fashion statement, Yorkies often have a little bun on top of their heads. Yorkies’ eyes can get easily irritated if fur gets into them, so getting a bang trim or putting it in a top knot is ideal.
Before getting a Yorkshire terrier puppy, consider checking for health conditions such as dislocated kneecaps (also known as luxating patella) or eye issues.

Training: Positivity is the name of the game when training a Yorkie. They thrive on pleasing their humans, so positive reinforcement with treat giving is how to win a Yorkie over for life. When introducing them to new people, dogs, or places, it’s best to do so slowly as they may be overwhelmed at first. Due to their high intelligence, they love participating in agility courses and obedience school. Creating fun games and tricks is an essential ingredient for a happy Yorkie pup.

Energy Level: Yorkshire terriers have energy to burn! Due to their small frame, that can be done with steady walks and outbursts of energy at a local park or backyard. Participating in small dog group outings can be helpful in getting rid of excess energy while learning how to socialize.

Life Span: Yorkshire terriers live between 11 – 15 years on average.

ABOUT US

We have shared our life with Yorkshire Terriers since 2007. During this time, we have accumulated many years experience in the Veterinary field both technically and administratively. Hard work and always something new to be learned every day. It's through my very first Veterinary job that I received my first Yorkie. She was given to me by a client- whom was also a good friend and I named her Fancy. The longer she was in my life, the more I paid attention to every Yorkie that came in to work. Seeing other Yorkie Parents, I'd always end up "comparing notes", exchanging stories, hearing the positives and negatives each person has with their particular little family member. Working Veterinary for so long definitely gave me an advantage. I had the wonderful opportunity during my employ while in Atlanta to get to travel to UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine. What an awesome experience!

There's no denying that a small teacup puppy has a cuteness factor that can overpower even the cutest of all the dog breeds, large or small. And, there's something to be said about holding a tiny dog in the palm of one hand. But beyond adorable, is a tiny teacup puppy a good choice for your new best friend?

you may be surprised to know that there really is no such official term called Teacup Puppy, even though puppy buyers who want a smaller than normal puppy would argue otherwise.

We are a small family breeders. All our yorkies live at home with us or with their co-owners. We want to breed yorkies with love, respecting the breed standard. perm family boasts of great bloodlines with a variety of pedigree ancestry. The yorkshire terrier is a cute breed we have come to love and enjoy.

I am not by any means a "self proclaimed authority" on everything there is about Yorkies. I just can't get over all these breeders out there who think they are "know-it-all's and "experts on everything". Veterinary Medicine is is continually making new discoveries and sharing them and their ideas all the time. I am and always will be on an indefinite learning process. There will ALWAYS be something new to be learned, not only form the Scientific & Veterinary world, but fellow Yorkie moms, dads and families everywhere. Hearing from Yorkie Parents provides me with alot of information that is very helpful. Everyone has their own technique for dealing with all kinds of matters they encounter regularly with their own Yorkie. It is highly enjoyable talking with everyone and getting all sorts of information and learning juicy tips for everything you can think of! Alot of the advise I have been given were things I would have never thought of, I use now when I have to and they work great----Thanks!

TEN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YORKIE PUPPIES

Yorkshire terriers, also known as Yorkies, are not the kind of pets you can just place a bowel a food in front of them and leave them alone. These dogs require a lot of care and training. While they do not take up much space, these puppy pet owners need some basic facts about the dog to ensure many years of healthy living.

They Require Lots of Attention
Yorkie puppies have long, beautiful coats that require a lot of maintenance. Brush their coats thoroughly every day so that they do not become matted. Beginning this activity at an early age ensures that the pooch will learn to tolerate its daily grooming.

They Need a Special Diet
A Yorkie puppy may not eat much, but needs a diet low in fat and high in nutrients. Mix soft food with dog food in order to keep the teeth healthy. Watch out for food allergies and adjust the puppy's diet as necessary.

They Are Prone to Low Blood Sugar
Monitor him to see that your puppy is drinking plenty of water, espcially if the active puppy plays often. These puppies have lots of energy, making them susceptible to low blood sugar. If you think your puppy may be running low, place a small amount of sweet water or syrup for him, to make sure you keep the sugar levels at normal. After 12 weeks of age, the puppy usually grows out of this risk.

They Don't Realize They Are Small
Yorkie puppies can pack quite an attitude. No stranger or knock at the door will go unnoticed by these little watchdogs. Work with your puppy early to ensure that the warning bark does not become too shrill.

They Need Regular Medical Care
Yorkie breeds are prone to developing various medical problems, so take your puppy to the veterinarian regularly . Keep all appointments and make an additional visits if you notice any drastic changes in your puppy's behavior.

Housebreaking May Be Difficult
Because these types of puppies can be stubborn, many pet owners of Yorkies have trouble developing a housebreaking routine. Many have found success at five and six months old. In the meantime, you may want to consider having an indoor litter box or doggy door leading to a small covered potty yard.

They Do Not Like The Cold
Yorkie puppies despise the cold and wet weather. Many times these dogs will not want to place their pampered paws on wet pavement or on the porch after a snowfall. This can also make housebreaking all the more challenging.

They Can Be Possessive
Yorkie puppies are quick to take ownership of things like food and toys. Properly instruct them that you won't tolerate his behavior. Speak your disapproval in a stern voice. Because Yorkies want to please their owners, this form of punishment will likely deter the possessive behavior.

They Love to Cuddle
These affectionate puppies make great companions because they are loveable lap dogs. Yorkies want to bask in total comfort, so they would be more than happy to snuggle in between soft pillows or on your chest while you watch television.

They May Require A Lot of Patience
Because they require much attention in their day-to-day care, Yorkie puppies also need a lot of patience. Be firm but fair with your new pet. The first year is the most difficult, but your puppy will develop a better temperament as it grows older.
