Wow, how time flies!
To reminisce on how time travels by so quickly is surreal; at times I feel as though everything is passing by so quickly that I don't have adequate time to soak it up but then there at times that seem to be crawling along. Both are to be cherished because before you know it, the moment is gone and your life is continuing on.
It is crazy to think that Hobbes joined our household not even five months ago. The imprint that animals have on our lives is indescribable.
Due to the craziness of life chugging along too quickly as described above, I have fallen short with continuing to post on this page. I figured now would be the perfect chance to catch up:
Where we last left off was when Hobbes first joined our home and was settling in. Settling in wasn't without its challenges though; FeLV + kitties can come with some challenges. Hobbes developed inappropriate urination shortly after we brought him home. A trip to the vet and weeks of troubleshooting this issue, it boiled down to Hobbes struggling with bladder inflammation and some confusion regarding litter box mannerism. After a few more weeks of adjustment Hobbes settled in beautifully.
Hobbes is the number one cuddler of the household and has been for a bit; he sleeps with us every night. He is very loving during night-time cuddles when he's feeling cozy. When he needs some extra lovings he likes to caress our face until someone arises enough to return the face caresses.
Hobbes chose his favorite toy very quickly when he arrived home which is a velvet red coil. He is a very mouthy guy and will walk around the house with his toys in his mouth but if you aren't careful, he will walk off with your socks. He has even stolen my bathroom bag with my tweezers in it!
It is hard to put such sweetness, innocence and beauty into words but to say Hobbes is loved is an understatement.
Unfortunately some FeLV + kitties struggle with health issues especially issues that may arise around 2-3 years of age.
When taken to the vet due to very slightly difference in behavior, Hobbes was found to have multiple masses growing throughout his abdominal cavity and intestines. For an FeLV + cat this was an issue potentially on the horizon since the beginning.
Hobbes will now be receiving supportive medical care until he can no longer remain comfortable.
Due to Hobbes being FeLV +, chemotherapy is not an ideal option based off of the end result being numerous health issues caused by his compromised immune system.

Our family was fueled by love after our first FeLV + kitty Calvin joined our lives which has created a need for us to help these kitties in need. Typically, FeLV + kitties are not able to be rehomed and in some cases, are euthanized once diagnosed. What we have learned from this adventure so far is that no life is worth limiting due to the excuse of an illness. Calvin and Hobbes has changed our lives as much as we were able to change theirs. This process does not go without a lot of education and an immense amount of heart break but we will keep pursuing this over and over again because one changed life is someone's entire life being given a chance.

To the animals that don't have a voice, we are here for you. And to the FeLV + angels that just need a chance to be loved, we will never stop fighting for you.

Hobbes has settled in nicely at his new home.
We have slowly introduced him to the dogs which was as smooth as butter! Hobbes walked right up to the dogs with confidence, right then and there, the dogs decided he was just a new member of the family.
We have noticed an intermittent cough which we are closely monitoring but he has a wonderful appetite and is happy and bright.
Hobbes favorite toy is a velvet spring that he chooses to carry around the house. He loves to grab any object he can find and walk around with it.
I will be consulting with some veterinarians I work with to determine a treatment for his chronic goopy eye to hopefully provide him some relief from the discharge/irritation.

We would like to proudly introduce Hobbes!
Hobbes began his life as a stray in a cat colony on a piece of property near Yuba City. He was taken in by a local rescue by the name of Perfect Paws who traps feral cats to get them neutered before releasing them back to their original colony location.
Due to Hobbes overly friendly nature and all white fur/bright pink ears (prone to cancer), Perfect Paws brought him in. He was neutered, vaccinated and was kept separate from the other rescue pets due to him being FeLV positive. Hobbes was able to live a luxurious life with Perfect Paws until we came looking to adopt FeLV positive cats.
Hobbes now gets to live the remainder of his life in our home. He is a very calm-natured kitty but plays like there’s no tomorrow and rips around the house. He has already made himself at home as if he’s lived with us from the beginning.
Hobbes has a chronically goopy eye but the eye itself is healthy. He also occasionally drools when given the best pets and scratches.
We love Hobbes already and we are so excited to give him the best home for the rest of his life.

Last weekend our family was able to meet two beautiful white kitties that are both FeLV positive that were taken in by a private/local rescue; it was love at first sight with these two sweet souls that just wanted to be loved. We agreed to adopt both of these kitties.
Unfortunately the older of the two cats (his name was Papasan) developed labored breathing and a lack of appetite before he was scheduled to come home with us so he was taken to the veterinary clinic by the rescue for a work-up. Radiographs were performed and it turns out that Papasan had developed fluid in his lungs and a nodule growth (the same clinical diagnosis as Calvin). The rescue elected to humanely euthanize.
This is the exact reason I have created this page and why our family has promised to change lives of FeLV cats. These cats may or may not live a long life but that does not mean that they do not deserve to be full-heartedly loved until their last day. Papasan was lucky to have found his rescuer who provided him a safe and loving home until his last day. Humane euthanasia was made to make sure that his illness did not cause him unnecessary chronic pain.
Today our hearts ache for Papasan but we find comfort in knowing that Papasan was able to leave this world in the arms of someone who loved him. Papasan will forever remain in our hearts.
The younger white kitty, who was Papasan's pal, will be coming home to live with us in the next week and we are very excited. I will be making a post introducing this handsome boy once he has physically joined our family.

We would like to thank each and every one of you that has liked and followed this page.
I would like to take a moment to introduce our family behind FeLV Cats Need Love Too.

Allie Bachhuber and Wesley Folsom are the humans of the household. I, Allie, am a veterinary technician who currently works for UC Davis. I started off as an animal crazed lover my entire life before deciding to make veterinary medicine my career approximately six years ago. Wes is an Air Force veteran who has traveled across the United States throughout his lifetime. Wes not only shares my love and passion for animals but has a gentle and soft soul that animals are drawn to like a magnet.
Our home consists of three dogs; Nala, Cam and Jayda. All three are rescues and have lived with us the majority of their lives. The three of them are cat-friendly and desensitized. They are a handful of personalities and fill our home with constant joy and dog hair. They truly are the Three Musketeers.

On May 15, 2020 our family lost a precious part of our family; Calvin (our FeLV+ cat).

Calvin came into our life around December of 2019. A personal friend of ours found Calvin as a stray in Davis; he and his wife took him in and provided veterinary care and a temporary home while they searched for his forever home. That’s when our family was given the opportunity to meet him and have him change our life forever. We took him into our family consisting of two humans and three dogs. Calvin not only made himself at home, he became an anchor in our home and family within days. He meshed perfectly with the dogs (even participating in play) and learned to live a life of luxury.
Unfortunately, Calvin’s compromised immune system developed cancer with grave prognosis and a diagnosis of only a few weeks to live while undergoing chemotherapy. Heartbroken, our family decided that it was not fair to put Calvin through that much pain and humanely euthanized.

Calvin wasn’t just a family cat; he changed our family dynamic and brought so much joy into our hearts. We were given the opportunity of a life time by having Calvin in our life for a short six months.
FeLV cats tend to remain in shelters long term or their entire lives because homes with existing cats cannot take in an FeLV cat or the idea of a potentially short lived cat is too much to take on. For us, losing Calvin has sparked a need to make a difference. We have decided to adopt FeLV positive cats only to provide them a forever and luxurious home until their last day, regardless if that’s a normal lifespan or a compromised/short life.

This page will document the process of us adopting FeLV positive cats and providing them the home of a lifetime and supportive care until their last day.
We are not an animal rescue, we are just a regular home looking to make a difference. This means that we only have the capacity to house 2-3 cats at a time. When we lose an angel too soon due to FeLV, then we will make a difference in another cats life and introduce them to the luxury of a safe home. And we will continue to do this because FeLV Cats Need Love Too.
We understand that most cannot adopt special needs animals so we ask for support in making a difference in these animals lives regardless if that just means following this page and sending love our way.
Updates will be posted regularly.
