Want to know what a good breeder looks like?

All breeders look different! There is no one size fits all with breeding, but responsible breeding to us means that breeders:

🐾Provide every dog with care and ❤️
🐾Preserve the parents' welfare.
🐾Health test all parents to avoid passing health conditions down to puppies.
🐾Register purebred puppies.
🐾Socialise puppies to give them the best chance to grow into confident dogs.

Do you know how much puppies need to sleep? ⁠

A lot of issues can pop up with puppies because they are over-tired. You may get a puppy who is excellent at taking themself for a nap, but others need naps to be encouraged. ⁠

Every puppy is different, but they have one thing in common they need a lot of rest and naps to help them grow and not be too cranky!

Let's talk puppies and patience. ⁠
At 8 weeks old, you can bring a puppy home, but there is a lot for them still to discover. Getting a puppy can feel overwhelming for you, but it's all a bit scary if you think about it from the puppy's point of view. ⁠
⁠
They've left their family and everything they know. It's important as a new puppy owner to remember that your puppy will need time. It can be easy to slip into the mindset that your puppy needs to know things now and fast, but giving your puppy a chance to relax and settle into its new environment will help you bond. ⁠
Getting stressed with puppy training and the new demands of owning a puppy is natural, but here are some tips that can help:⁠

🐾Take a break, put your puppy in its crate or ask someone to take over for a while. Looking after a puppy takes a lot of time and focus, and you need some time to yourself. ⁠
⁠
🐾Sometimes, we can speak to puppies and dogs as if they understand us when they have no clue! Think about whether your puppy knows what you are asking or expecting. Has your puppy been taught what you're asking? Or are you expecting it to understand you too soon?⁠

Knowing about the breed group means you get an in-depth look at what they are bred to do and the typical behaviours of a breed. ⁠

There are some ways to fulfil these natural behaviours, for example: ⁠

🐾For diggers: A ball pit with scattered treats or a sandpit.⁠
🐕Hunting/ tracking: Hide treats or toys around the house or outside to find.⁠
⚽️Herding dogs: Fetch, hide-and-seek.

Floppy ears, fabulous hair and a wagging tail; this week, our breed highlight is all about the Cocker spaniel.

Cocker spaniels are fantastic family pets. They can adapt well to flats and are known to be playful, cheerful dogs. That fabulous hair, however, does mean lots of grooming!
