Yes! Scratching 🐈 is a normal behaviour for cats.

In fact, 60% of cats who scratch furniture lack any underlying behavioral problem (Morgan and Houpt, 1990).

This normal behaviour actually has a purpose! It removes dead cells from the claws and it’s used as a form of communication or marking between cats.

🐱 First we should try to PREVENT this behaviour from happening by doing the following:

-Environmental enrichment by incorporating scratching posts. Tip: place it close to the location/furniture they normally scratch.

-Keep nails trimmed

-Use feli scratch by

-Temporarily block access to inappropriate scratching locations while introducing new scratching areas.

🐱 If prevention isn’t working, try to work through the following PROBLEM SOLVING tips:

-Interrupt behaviour in the inappropriate location, take cat to desirable scratching area and REINFORCE that behaviour in that location.

-Avoid punishment as this will only teach the cat to avoid the owner and will result in the cat scratching in undesirable location when the owner is away.

-If there is evidence of excessive scratching despite tips listed above, consult with your vet and discuss behavioral referral services with a certified professional.

‼️ Important info below ‼️

Vaccinating your pet is a crucial stepping stone into responsible ownership and preventative healthcare.

Although vaccination protocols may differ in different parts of the world due to the epidemiology of infectious diseases, and pet lifestyle, the have developed evidence based recommendations for vets and pet owners to follow, in order to ensure our furry friends are protected against life threatening diseases. The guidelines referenced were published through .

For Ireland and the UK we recommend the following for fit and healthy pets (rabies-free countries):

🐶 Dogs (variations if private or shelter environment):

- Puppy course. 2 injections, 2-4 wks apart. Start at 6-8 weeks of age.
Core vaccines: Parvovirus/Adenovirus/Distemper
Non-core vaccines: Leptospirosis/Bordetella/Parainfluenza

-First annual booster
At 12 months your dog will receive a single injection of the above vaccinations to boost immunity. Thereafter, this protocol will be repeated every THIRD year.

-Annual boosters in between
They will be vaccinated with non-core vaccinations to boost Leptospirosis and Bordetella/Parainfluenza immunity.

In conclusion, your doggy goes to the vet every year for a general health check and vaccinations, but the vaccinations will differ in order to avoid over or under- vaccinating, and respecting your pets immune response to vaccines.

🐱 Cats (will vary according to lifestyle if strictly indoor/outdoor or both):

- Kitten course. 2 injections, 2-4 weeks apart. Start at 6-8 weeks of age.
Core vaccines: Parvovirus/Herpesvirus/Calicivirus
Non-core vaccines: Feline leukemia virus

-First annual booster
They will receive a single injection of the above vaccinations to boost immunity.

-Annual boosters in between
They will receive a single injection of the above vaccinations either annually, or every SECOND or THIRD year depending a lot on life style and if it is a high-risk area for certain diseases.

Just like with dogs, remember your cat will go to the vet annually for a general health check and vaccines, but the vaccinations they will receive will differ.
