Polydactyly refers to a genetic mutation that causes extra toes on one or more of their paws. Normally, cats have five toes on their front paws and four on their back paws, but polydactyl cats may have up to seven toes on each paw.

Polydactyly is caused by a dominant gene, meaning that only one parent needs to carry the gene for it to potentially be passed on to their offspring. This mutation doesn't typically cause health problems and is usually seen as a harmless genetic variation.

Polydactyl cats often have larger, wider paws than non-polydactyls, giving them a distinctive appearance. The extra toes can be fully functional and may even give the cat better grip or climbing ability.

Historically, polydactyl cats were especially common among ship cats, and it is believed that early sailors may have preferred these cats, thinking they brought good luck or that their extra toes made them better mousers on board ships. Some cats with polydactyly are referred to as "Hemingway cats," after author Ernest Hemingway, who was known to have kept many polydactyl cats at his home in Key West, Florida.

While polydactyly is not generally considered a disqualifying trait in Maine C***s, some breed standards for showing cats may prefer non-polydactyl paws.
