When Is It Safe For a Puppy to Be Around Other Dogs

Your new puppy can meet vaccinated dogs at any age. However, if the vaccination status of the other dog is unknown, it’s advised that you keep your pup away. Until your pooch is fully vaccinated, they cannot go fully out and about to mix with other dogs. Without their complete set of vaccinations, your puppy risks contracting potentially deadly diseases.

Do NOT Breed a Female Dog on Her First Heat!

Responsible dog breeders never breed on their females' first couple of heats. And there is no exception.

A female dog's body can be s*xually ready and get into heat but both her body's support system and her fertility are both not fully matured yet. Therefore, a pregnancy that early would have a high risk of failure.

This is a terrible start for any adult female dog so please make sure you wait at least two heats before planning a mating.

Canine miscarriages happen often:

Sometimes in the earlier stages of pregnancy, the mother absorbs placental and fetal tissue from the uterus, back into the body leaving no signs that the puppies ever existed – they simply vanish. This can make it extremely difficult for dog owners to detect and may leave you wondering whether the puppies were ever there in the first place. If the mother does not spontaneously absorb her puppies, she may expel them through the birth canal; she may also experience a lot of bleeding. Even then, she may lick and eat the evidence of the miscarriage, leaving you none the wiser.

Dog miscarriages are usually caused by a hormone imbalance (usually low progesterone levels) inside the female dog’s exceptionally delicate uterus. Miscarriages may also be triggered by certain bacteria, the most common of which being Brucella canis. They can also be caused by parasites such as Neospora caninum which is found in contaminated food and water and in some fungi. If your dog has experienced a miscarriage consequent of bacteria or fungi, she will need to be treated with even greater urgency as the bacteria or parasite may cause additional health risks.

• Any time the puppy is not directly supervised, he should be in a safe place where he can’t get into trouble. Provide appropriate safe toys for him to chew. Nobody would think of giving a human toddler total freedom in a home, and puppies need the same careful supervision. Eliminating opportunities for accidents and destructive behavior will get you through the puppy phase with most of your stuff intact! This helps make sure that bad habits never get a chance to take hold.

A tick lays 1000's of eggs once and then dies, while a flea lays 40 eggs a day for several weeks.

Dealing with lice, ticks and fleas consists of a global approach that includes three coordinated actions:

1. Clean your dog(s) using a dog flea treatment: preventive drops or rapid-killing shampoo if the dog is infested

2. Use a flea fogger or flea bomb with residual cleaner to disinfect your home

3. Spray your outdoor area with a natural gentle tick and flea spray

That way, you’re getting rid of the parasites everywhere they are, break the life cycle of larvae and prevent eggs from hatching. This is done by using contact killing products to eliminate adults, and an insect growth regulator to interrupt the development of larvae and eggs.

ITS GETTING HOT OUTSIDE AGAIN!

Knowing the causes and signs of heatstroke is essential. As a bully owner, you’ve already heard of heatstroke in dogs. But are there any early symptoms you might miss? And do you know how to give emergency first aid in the event that your dog suffers heatstroke?

WHAT IS HEATSTROKE
Heatstroke, also known as sunstroke, is a severe condition that can result in death. This condition is caused by severe hyperthermia and/or physical exertion. Dogs cannot reduce their body temperature as efficiently as humans can, which puts them at greater risk of heatstroke when hot weather draws in. This is especially a risk for brachycephalic (dogs with smashed faces), obese, and long-haired dogs.

SYMPTOMS
Heatstroke comes with a broad spectrum of symptoms. The early symptoms include behavioral changes, confusion, irritation, and agitation. Your dog might appear anxious or snap easily as heatstroke sets in. Then, the more obvious signs may appear. These include panting, drooling, bright red or pale gums, a bright red tongue, increased heart rate, muscle tremors, vomiting, and diarrhea. Your dog may appear dizzy, staggering about as confusion increases. This can progress to collapse, seizures, and coma in less than 15 minutes.

TREATMENT
Begin emergency first aid right away. You must remove your pet from the hot environment immediately. Then, begin cooling by draping a towel dampened with cool water over your dog. You must not use ice-cold water or ice for this, as decreasing their body temperature too quickly can cause shock. Once you have begun the cooling process you can take your dog to an emergency vet. Dogs who are already in the cooling process before arriving at the vet have a significantly better chance of surviving than those that are not.

1. Assertive/Aggressive
2. Neutral
3. Passive.

In addition, there can be a mishmash of all three, depending on the situation. Objectively observe and decide which group or combination your puppy or dog fits. Today we will discuss # 2.

Neutral

Neutrals have medium prey drive. They are dogs that are self-confident, and have exceptional coping skills. They don’t look for trouble. Again, size or s*x doesn’t matter. They respectfully, yet confidently enter a dog park. They enjoy interacting, and happily play with other dogs.

They are also content to find non-destructive ways to amuse themselves, if there is no one to play with. If challenged, they avoid confrontation by either simply walking away, or appearing passive. They would rather chase a Frisbee or retrieve a ball, than wrestle.

They unselfishly share their food and possessions. Their toys show normal wear and tear, but aren’t shred to bits in minutes! They respect and appreciate playing with you or another dog, but don’t demand it. They are content to find non-destructive ways to amuse themselves when left alone. A neutral dog, is a well-balanced dog.

Assertive/Aggressive

An Assertive/Aggressive puppy or dog typically has the highest prey drive. Size or s*x has nothing to do with the Assertive/Aggressiveness. It is not surprising to find the smallest or females, can be the most Assertive/Aggressive.

A dog with this disposition boldly enters a dog park, and immediately scopes it to find a challenge. They demand attention. They would not hesitate to confront another dog, play tug-of-war, wrestle, or chase others. They bait and set up dares. One way is by bringing an item or toy to another dog, drop it, then sn**ch it away. Or, just sn**ching a toy or ball from another dog. They always play to win.

Assertive/Aggressives can be rough on toys, other animals, and property. They zealously look for action. They will destroy anything in their path to get what they want. They will annihilate toys, even those guaranteed for their forceful makeup!

They are possessive and territorial. They follow their own rules. They have no boundaries. Assertive/Aggressives play rough! That doesn’t imply they are necessarily malicious, but they are bullies. Because they don’t “play nice,” they can be annoying, and unwanted.

If you don’t want your dog to have a reputation of being an Assertive/Aggressive dog, with reasonable effort on your part, you can modify their behavior, and guide him or her into the Neutral group. Establish your authority. Start by setting boundaries and rules. Immediately and consistently, reward with praise, appropriate behaviors. Immediately and consistently, correct inappropriate behaviors. Help them develop coping skills. You will see a difference!

It is always best to talk to your veterinary healthcare professional before giving any over-the-counter medications to your dog.
First, since human doses and doses for dogs are different, you need to know the correct dose to administer. Second, many over-the-counter (OTC) medications are NOT safe for dogs Do not assume that drugs are safe for your dog just because they can be purchased without a prescription; making that assumption can lead to toxic effects.
Here are a couple of OTC you can try if you cant get to your vet in time.
1. Antihistamines. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), cetirizine (Zyrtec), and loratadine (Claritin) are commonly used antihistamines that relieve allergy symptoms or counteract allergic reactions. Antihistamines are usually safe but can make some dogs drowsy and others hyperactive. OTC antihistamine preparations may contain other ingredients such as decongestants that are not safe for dogs. Read the label carefully to ensure that the product only contains antihistamine. Check with your veterinary healthcare team to make sure that the antihistamine you have is suitable for your dog.
2. Topical antibiotic ointment. Neosporin is a common topical antibiotic used on minor cuts and scrapes. This ointment is pretty safe in dogs and should be in every first aid kit. Verify that the ointment only contains antibiotic and not steroids, which can actually delay healing. Make sure to clean your dog’s wound before applying the antibiotic ointment and cover the wound so your dog does not lick the ointment off.

3. Hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide can be used topically to clean out a superficial flesh wound and can also be given orally to induce vomiting if your dog ingests something he should not have (i.e., your medications, rodenticides, toxic plants). However, vomiting may cause more harm than good, so PRIOR to giving an oral dose of hydrogen peroxide, contact your veterinarian, or emergency veterinary hospital before you give your dog an oral dose and to find out how much to give.

I can’t recall the number of times someone’s asked me ‘Is the American Bully a Pitbull?’ It’s not surprising that society at large wants to know more about the American Bully. It’s on its way to becoming one of the most popular dog breeds of recent years.

Let me try to explain. First of all, the confusion about whether an American Bully is a Pitbull is partly related to the breed’s name. Because of this, folks also tend to get confused about the physical traits of Bullies and what they’re actually supposed to look like.

THE AMIERICAN BULLY IS NOT A PITBULL!

Despite having similarities in its name and genetics. The term Pitbull, in fact, refers to a type of dog including 4 breeds but can also be used as an abbreviation for the American Pitbull Terrier breed.

The four main breeds under the Pitbull-type umbrella include the:

American Pitbull Terrier
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
American Bully
American Staffordshire Terrier

One of the easiest ways to tell an American Bully apart from a Pitbull is by comparing their builds.

Pitbull breeds usually have a wide chest, and their overall build is muscular and broad. Their ribs continue to the back, giving them an elongated and attractive look. Also, a Pitbull’s body tends to incline towards its back, and its fore chest is at level with the shoulders.

On the other hand, American Bullies are much bulkier in appearance. Bullies have a deep chest with well-defined ribs. Their fore chests do not extend beyond their shoulder points, and their backs appear quite wide. But the trademark of an American Bully is its large blocky head and short legs.

I know it’s all a bit confusing. Just remember, the term Pitbull doesn’t necessarily refer to a “breed”, rather a “type” of dogs.

In conclusion, the American Bully is a type of Pitbull but is not the breed Pitbull.

Back to back breeding means breeding your bitch for several consecutive heats. Often, when breeding back to back, the breeder tries to get his female pregnant twice in a row, or even more, to then let her rest for several cycles or completely retire her from the breeding program.

Many canine reproduction specialists, like Dr. Hutchison, have concluded the opposite is true. To these experts, once the female is fertile (usually from the second heat), she should be bred at every heat until she is “done”. A bitch is done when you see a sharp decline in the litter size, or when you decide that you do not want to breed her again for whatever reason you may have.

As a bitch gets older, her levels of progesterone decrease causing the regeneration of the uterus to become more approximate. Bi***es of age six and over have a 33.3% less chance of conceiving than bi***es under 6 years of age. Whether a pregnancy occurs or not, the bitch goes through the very same progesterone effects.
