I have probably said this to a few people (not clients lol).
Our society is obsessed with having control over dogs, with very little belief that our pets might actually have their own wants, needs, likes, dislikes, and fears.
One of the things I often ask clients if they want their dog to do something is “why?”. Why do you want them to come to the pub on a Friday night? Why do they need to walk right at your heel? Why don’t you want them to sniff that p*e?
Asking ourselves this can really help us think about the drive of a behaviour and whether it’s to satisfy us or the dog.
If the answer is “because I want them to” or “because I told them”, then maybe go to therapist.
If you need help training your dog, and find the obsession with control a bit icky, comment BETA below and I’ll drop you a message!
