One of the more regularly seen snakes in the TEKSA Area.....

Herald or Red-lipped Snake (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia). A mildly-venomous nocturnal snake that feeds largely on toads and is commonly found in suburban gardens. Some individuals have red lips but further north they tend to have white lips. When cornered it puts up quite a show, coiling back and flattening its head while striking in an exaggerated manner. The venom of this snake has virtually no effect on humans and cats and dogs.

**** Update ****

The snake was transported to a Reptile Rehabilitation center, who had a vetenerian who specialises in reptiles, look at the snake.

A decision was made to do some surgery to clean out the wound and further repair the damage as best possible.

Since then the snake has been nursed and monitored and so far is doing well. It should be released within the next few weeks, depending on the healing progress and the next shedding of skin (ecdysis).

A beautiful Skaapsteker was removed from a house in Secunda. Unfortunately, I suspect someone tried to injure or kill it with a spade...

This now has longterm effects regarding treatment and rehabilitation, which is unfair towards the snake and the rescuers who need to find suitable people to treat the snake.

Please also be informed that the killing of local snakes could result in fines of upto R250 000 per snake.

🔖 Labels stuck on animals by our society have nothing to do with the truth. Speciesism (in short, racism in animal species) plays a huge role in this.

Humans have a herd mentality. Belonging to a group, adopting behaviors and opinions is therefore of vital importance to us from an evolutionary perspective. That is why we are incredibly susceptible to what our society whispers to us, often from childhood. That is part of us, and is therefore very understandable. Yet we must realize that what is normal for us at this time and what our group says is normal, is not immediately so. Certainly not when it comes to ranking animals.

Tuna? Belongs in sushi. A horse? Someone should be sitting on it. A pig? Bacon tho! A sea turtle? Save the sea turtle! A cat? So sweet, hug her! A cow? Delicious milk. A rat? Gross. An ant? Crush it!

These are all stereotypical expressions that allow prejudices to live on from generation to generation, and sometimes completely change in history, while this is completely disconnected from reality. Each animal has its own full life, with its own character and its own task on mother earth. They were not born to be put into our imaginary boxes, or real boxes. As soon as people realize this, we will treat animals and each other very differently. Speciesism must be addressed if we want to solve all the other ethical problems in the world.

Learn to look at each animal neutrally, and feel inside what you feel about them, instead of just listening to what everyone else says and creeps in you too. Fortunately, anti-racism within humanity is a major topic, now dare to look one step further and extend this to other animal species. It’s not that hard, if you have a heart. Use it and go vegan. 🌱

This is what you get when you call your next door neighbour because "I have been catching snakes my whole life"......

Firstly, this is animal cruelty!
Secondly, if you do not have the correct equipment, get someone who does.
Thirdly, this person is asking to be bitten and if he carries on like this, he will be sooner or later.

Please call people who are trained properly, with the proper equipment and had respect for the animal firstly, and then everyone else on scene.

Please note that I do not know this person and also do not have any idea where this happened.

For any safe removal of snakes, we can be contacted at 0730999929.

Why people would harm any type of animal is beyond me, but the cruelty that we see when it comes to snakes, lets me wonder what type of human is living amongst us.

This new snake season really did not start off all that well.

We were called out to relocate a snake that was found on the road way.

What we found was a very healthy looking "Skaapsteker".
After careful examination we found a fractured spine (broken back). This led us to deciding to end the snakes suffering.

Why are snakes so important to the environment?

Well they keep many problematic animals from becoming pests..... Animals such as rodents.

And what happens if snakes (there are other animals that also help) get killed off, well then we find things in the news, like what has just been released internationally by China:

China reports two cases of bubonic plague (Black Death) that has a case-fatality ratio of 30%.

What is bubonic plague?
Bubonic Plague is a potentially lethal infectious disease that is caused by bacteria called Yersinia pestis that live in some animals - mainly rodents - and their fleas.

From 2010 to 2015 there were 3,248 cases reported worldwide, including 584 deaths.

Historically, it has also been called the Black Death, in reference to the gangrenous blackening and death of body parts, such as the fingers and toes, that can happen with the illness.

Not snake related, but really, these guys do make a difference!

I would like to request if you are at all in a position to assist a good cause financially, then the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital is the cause to support.

AARDWOLF UPDATE: Our Aardwolf (Proteles cristata) cub is growing up! While she is almost fully weaned from her milk formula, she loves insects and currently weights 2.6kg's! She is now in an outside enclosure, and goes for regular walks for enrichment, which includes digging for termites and discovering new sounds and smells.

Eventually she will begin her slow release programme, where she will be begin to catch her own insects and develop more independence in preparation for her eventual release.

Today we were called to rescue a Brown House snake which had got itself stuck in an electric gate motor.
The little one (50cm) was eventually rescued and relocated to an area away from houses, were he will have plenty of food and hiding space.

A shout out to the De Waal family for calling us to save this very healthy snake.

I wish people would stop using poison....

Just a reminder.
There is no such thing as
“owl friendly” or “animal friendly” poison.

Poison is poison.
It is designed to kill.

People, please this is not the way to sort out a snake that is on your property.....

This is uncalled for and the quickest way that people get injured.

It is now the beginning of snake season again, and snakes are going to be found, please rather call a qualified snake handler to safely remove the snake.....

By the way this photo was taken from another FB Group where this person is bragging about how he killed the Rinkhals....
