Feed costs takes up to 65% of costs of poultry production.
Feed costs takes more than half of the production costs. Any innovative model which lowers feed costs increases profitability thus improves competitive advantage of the farmer.
Purchasing straight feeds from stockfeeds shops is being challenged with cheaper options, as farmers are finding ways of cutting feed costs. The following, are cost cutting options being exploited by farmers.
1. Buying concentrates and mixing with locally grown maize.
2. Planting lucerne for poultry feeding.
3. Freeranging to access locusts and other nutritious insects.
4. Maggot farming
5. On farm feed formulation
At ibrood chickens, we feed broiler starter from day old to 3 weeks. We then formulate our own road runner grower, by mixing maize crush, soya meal, sunflower cake and bread crumbs. At week 14 we add mhunga to the mix and our birds lay eggs starting week 19. Cutting feed costs by on farm feed formulation and semi extensive production.
