Wishing a very Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all those celebrating. I know I am grateful for Frank, our sweet boy who was rescued from Lebanon.
We are also so grateful to have puppy pictures of our baby.
Thinking of all of those other dogs who were not so lucky and because of the are condemned to a life of abuse and torture.
If you are upset about the ban, here's something you can do - you can call your MP and let them know!
And here is a script you can use to give them solutions that don't involved the death of thousands and thousands of dogs.
Hi/Hello
I'm calling because I am very concerned by Canada's ban on importing rescued dogs from 113 (58%!) of the world's countries.
I share our government’s commitment to health and public safety, and so do all of Canada's responsible international rescue organizations. I am concerned that the new CFIA regulations shut down the humanitarian work of rescuing thousands of dogs each year who endure suffering and abuse.
We are asking for the ban to be amended to exempt rescue organizations. There are veterinarians who agree the risk of importing rabies can be effectively mitigated with proper preventive measures.
We propose the following as a responsible and reasonable alternative to an outright ban:
- A ban on the importation of dogs under eight (8) months of age from the flagged countries
- For dogs 8 months old or older, proof of the following would be necessary:
• vaccination for rabies with a rabies vaccine manufactured by a manufacturer/lab approved by Canadian authorities.
• sterilization; and,
• minimum time of 2 months with the rescuer/shelter in originating country.
Reputable international rescue organizations already adhere to these vetting standards voluntarily, as they are committed to the health and safety of Canadians and their pets, of rescued dogs, and of all dogs.
These proposed requirements more than adequately address the goal of avoiding bringing dog-rabies into Canada. These prerequisites would also help deter and w**d out those international puppy mills and breeders that import animals to Canada purely for profit and are known sources of diseased imported puppies.
The well-documented mental health benefits of the human-animal bond can’t be over-emphasized. For many years responsible international rescue organizations have not only brought in highly adoptable, healthy dogs in desperate need of homes, for Canadian families to love - they have also helped support sterilization and rabies inoculation programs for street dogs around the globe.
We respectfully ask that the Minister of Health agree to a thoughtful, transparent, positive dialogue with representatives from rescue organizations, to consider alternatives to an outright ban that will work to effectively keep canine rabies out of Canada and help eradicate it everywhere.
We are asking you to bring our proposals to the Minister of Health, and to Cabinet, for consideration.
Thank you for supporting and being the voice for the dogs!! ❤️🐾❤️
