This is Clooney. He is one of the retirement community pigs. Yesterday while my friend was at the farm feeding everyone he noticed that the pigs had some blood on them and sent me a pic. Looking at it, I wasn't sure if it was just his ear or more since it sort of looked like a slice in his neck. I called the vet and they came out, and we were able to determine it was just an ear nick/bite and that upon examination it was just some neck folds where the blood was sort of collecting that made it look like a cut. Ear nicks bleed like crazy which is why it looks really bad. Not sure how he got nicked, could have been one of the other pig's doing since piggies do that sometimes (they don't always have the best manners). Those guys are pretty lazy and rarely annoy each other but I guess we all have our moments. They sedated him a little (he was still a bit fiesty though) so we took advantage of that and did some teeth maintenance. Pic of Clooney in his "drunken" state (yes he's OK).

PSA - Make sure your critters are brought inside for next few days and not left out too long for potty breaks. If they are outdoor critters, make sure they have plenty of straw bedding and insulated houses if possible.

My dogs want to be outside and for the life of me I don't know why. I wish they would just come in instead of me having to open and close the door 20 thousand times calling their names and trying not to freeze my butt off in the process. I relocated some of the outdoor cats to one of the barns that is completely closed off from the elements with heat lamps and plenty of straw. The other outdoor cats have heated houses which they don't seem to want to use 🤦‍♀️ But there's heat lamps in the garage for them too. I also put an insulated pet house in the barn with plenty of straw in and around it just in case. The retirement community (the old pigs) got a ton more straw and so did the emus. This is beyond stressing me out. I will be really worrying about the critters until this is over. 😕

Taking advantage of the "heat wave" we're having yesterday and today. Making sure all the waterers that are hard to fill without a hose are filled to the brim because I have the luxury of using one right now. I'm glad I got a bunch of straw when I could find it so I don't have to worry about that. The pigs barn is sufficiently stocked right now and tomorrow I'll put out more for the retirement community and the emus. All the heaters are working as they should and I bought a couple of spares late last year just in case one unexpectedly went out on me🤞. Still need to get the outdoor kitty houses set up, they have plenty of regular insulated houses but I splurged and bought a couple of heated ones and a couple more heat lamps for the garage. Can't have my outdoor kitties becoming frozen pets. 🥶

Not looking forward to the next couple of days. These hardcore cold snaps always worry me with the animals. 😕

Miana was not happy with the sp*ed of feeding this morning so she helped herself to some food. 🙄

Day 2 of fun in the snow. The pigs were unhappy that they had to walk through the snow to get to the food. I was unimpressed with how much effort it took just to walk through the snow to feed and water them all so I feel their pain (although they are lower to the ground than I am so they win on that complaint). Skips refused to come out of his house to eat and the chickens were in their little house until they saw me but wouldn't step any farther into the snow (Mr Roo is on the branch because he's king of that castle and has to keep the coop under watch) LOL.

The geese were full of goositude as usual but they don't really care about the snow. And the retirement community has shelter (other than the dog house) but I guess they'd rather be in the snow so I'm piling up the straw for them. I ordered a cover for that spot since the seem to love it there but it hasn't yet arrived. I'm sure it will get here and the weather will become dry and warm so they won't need it. 🙄

It's pretty out and the snow stopped but the drifts are bad so the roads just keep covering over after the plow comes through. I did catch a picture of a very pretty cardinal though.

Snow day on the farm! I've been keeping up with waters and things when the weather wasn't so miserable but obviously the water is eventually going to need refilling before the weather breaks again. Today as I was literally getting ready to pour a bucket of water into the piggy trough, this nerd decided I wasn't moving fast enough so he dumped it over so he could create a puddle to drink from. 🤦‍♀️

The retirement community loves their straw, they only come up for food and then go right back to the warmth.

Creamsicle was my helper today and Skips said screw this weather I'm chilling in my house. Miana was also game off on the snow but she had to bleat at me a bit before going into their barn.

Tim can't get to me fast enough so he was running to see what I was up to (he has a funny gait because of his janky toe. It's comical) and Wilma was checking to make sure her food met her standards.

The animals are all set for the snow. It seems we all hate this weather though.

Whenever Nikola lays like this it reminds me of what the ducks look like when they sleep. She does this a lot. It's a good thing she's cute because she's kind of a snot. We've been working on her manners around people for awhile now, but it's hard to work on exposure and behavior when you live next to no one and she gets car sick easily. Dave and I discovered it's me she's trying to protect when we're out. When Dave was with her by himself she was fine. With me, it's kill anyone that looks at me LOL (ok not really, but she grumbles at anyone who gets too close). She's gotten a lot better with the vet but still, she needs more work. It's one thing I'm going to work harder at this coming year.

She's very sweet and loving though, at least with me anyway. LOL

This is Wren. She was originally a foster I had that Dave really wanted so I gave her to him right before we started dating. She's such a sweetie and like almost all of our other dogs, she's also a senior pup.

Today I took her to the vet to have a tumor on her leg removed. We discussed the likelihood that it would be cancer, but would confirm and then decide next steps. Most often, depending on age and type, the treatment is to keep the pups comfortable until it's time to cross the rainbow bridge. However, her pre-surgery bloodwork and x-rays showed some unexpected things. Her liver is not functioning properly. She has swelling of her spleen and she also has what appears to be nerve pinching in her neck. She was not a candidate for sedation so we couldn't remove the lump. It's likely there is cancer somewhere even though they didn't see what appeared to be tumors on her liver or her lungs at this time. In order to keep her comfortable with her neck issues, steroids are used. But the steroids have a negative effect on the liver. Ugh. The options are: see a specialist with no guarantees there will be any long term solutions or keep her comfortable by trying to find a low dose steroid regimen that will keep her comfortable but not hinder liver function too much. We are trying the steroid option and see how that goes. My experience with senior and geriatric dogs is that they don't do well with the stress of treatments and surgeries and when it's cancer it spreads fast. So this sucks. I'm just concerned with keeping her comfortable and spoiling her. Hopefully we can keep her comfortable for a while. ❤️

This goober is sad. Asti has a favorite toy, it's called redbone. If you tell her to go get redbone, she almost always knows exactly where it is and runs and gets it. She'll carry it around everywhere. Dave bought several so we'd always have one since sometimes she loses one or obliterates it. She tends to keep them for a very long time then she chews it up into small pieces and no more redbone. Well, she recently went through both of the ones I had and the only one I have left is a giant redbone which she does not like as it's too big for her to chew on. So of course I ordered a new medium one but it won't come for a few days. She'll survive but the next few days will consist of her running around trying to find any parts of medium redbone left she can chew on.

Pics included are: Sad Asti, unacceptable giant redbone, and happy Asti when I told her I ordered a new medium redbone (and her shadow Xe in the background).

I just realized I forgot to post some pics of the piggies and goaty-goats Thanksgiving snack! I don't make it to Jungle Jim's very often but when I do I always hit their marked down veggie and fruit aisle. They always have reduced produce that is really cheap and not rotten. I buy a bunch of it and the critters get a nice treat that is made up of different things I can't get a "normal" supermarket.

It wasn't great out weather wise that day so my pics aren't the best but they were having a good time. Hopefully I can get down there again over the next couple of weeks since I have some time off and get them a nice Christmas treat too. ❤️

This bonehead was not helpful today while I was going through some of Dave's button down shirts for Caden. She kept laying on them and then would get mad when I made her get off of them so I could put them in the "Caden pile". Then she apparently got tuckered out and took a nap. 😒

My Capone (or Mr. Pone as I like to call him). Such a sweetie. My babies are getting old and it sucks. Over half of my dogs are senior age or geriatric (based on size and age). Capone is one of them. He's starting to slow down and he can no longer hold his water like he used. It's been a while since I've had to break out the washable puppy pads but so far all the old dogs have consistently used them so I'm glad for that. I'm not having any fun cleaning up after a 110 lb puppy several times a day but that's OK. He's not doing it on purpose and as long as he's having quality of life otherwise, then I'd rather be spending my time washing p*e pads everyday and still be able to get snuggles from him while I can. It sucks that all the old dogs are close in age too, I try not to think about the worse case scenario with this. 🫣

I'll never understand how people can send their senior dogs to the pound to live out their last days scared and confused. Inconvenience I guess. 💔

This one woke up this morning choosing violence. She attacked Mrs Gray for no reason, which she was not impressed with, and then she rolled over like, pet me, I dare you. I know not to fall for this "cute" move.

Violence is not the answer, Burrow. 😼
