‼️“My dog is friendly!!!!!” ‼️
Every person who has a reactive dog has heard this phrase uttered and wished the ground would open up and swallow them (or the other people) whole.
You have taken the time to choose a lovely, quiet walk; you are happily wandering along, not a care in the world… then you see them…..an off-lead dog heading your way! You call your dog and pop them back on a lead, but the other owners don’t call their dog back. You call out - they ignore you - you call out again, and then that phrase resonates around the countryside!!!! 😫
“My dog is friendly!!!!!”
Your dog now reacts because they can’t cope in this situation, and the other person starts ‘having a go’ at you for your dog ‘attacking’ theirs (even just at the bark)… You feel disheartened; you feel embarrassed; you feel like you are not allowed to walk anywhere… Of course you can!!!
Dogs are allowed to say “NO” if they feel threatened, it’s a natural response for all living creatures - it’s a defence mechanism. You are only responsible for your own dog, so make sure you don’t set them up to fail. If you have a nice friendly dog, that’s awesome, but don’t allow them to run up to on-lead dogs, because if they get frightened or worse (and a dog that has not bitten, can one day bite) then you too will now have a ‘reactive dog’.
Let’s all be responsible for our own dogs, and keep them as safe as we possibly can, and don’t forget, people with ‘reactive’ dogs are only asking you to control your dog for a few seconds as you pass each other… 👍
