It’s been a busy week this week hence the lack of updates! I have been away for a few days working on a new research project which was fascinating and eye opening as always 😊.

Now I am back we have been continuing to incorporate using our Indiba Animal Health machine into treatment protocols with both inhouse clients and external ones.

Contact Tallen Veterinary Physiotherapy or message the page if you would like more information about INDIBA and what it can be used for.

Today was a Sleip day- we try to use the Sleip gait analysis app once a week on all our inmates so that we build up a picture of normal for each horse.

This allows us to closely monitor any changes for better or worse and react accordingly.

Second in the series of what type of livery we can offer.

TYPE 2: Box Rest with Walking Exercise only

This type of livery is suitable for horses who have finished their period of complete box rest after surgery or injury.

They are now ready to begin a carefully structured exercise programme to help return them to full fitness.

We would usually start this phase with non-ridden work. This might be in-hand walking, long reining or going on the horsewalker for a short period only. Often a mixture of all 3!

At this stage we are trying to gently increase the load on the damaged structures (tendons/ligaments/surgical scars or bony injuries) without putting them under so much strain that they do not heal fully or they re-injure.

Horses can be their own worst enemy at this point and they do not always see the need to spend time in walk only!

Luckily we have great facilities here to help make this easier- we have plenty of large barns, the farmyard, indoor and outdoor schools and lots of off road tracks. This means that we can usually find a way to do the walking that the horse can enjoy.

We slowly build up the amount of time spent walking and the amount of challenge within the exercise (adding hills, varied terrain, equine gym etc). This helps ensure that, by the time the weeks of walking are over, the horse is mentally and physically ready for increased activity.

Very reasonably priced and all types of horses catered for.

I thought it might be useful to do a series of posts on what sort of rehab we offer here at Equine Athletes. With some examples of horses who have stayed with us.

Type 1: BOX REST LIVERY

This is suitable for horses who have had a recent soft tissue injury or are recovering from surgery. At this early stage of their recovery they may need to be in a stable to allow them the best chance to heal.

If this is the case we will try to keep the horse as settled and happy as possible with access to friends, food and a safe, comfortable environment.

We spend time with them grooming them and doing baited stretches daily so they feel good and retain as much core strength as possible.

When the box rest phase of their rehab is over we use a structured process to gradually increase the size of their living area and then reintroduce exercise and turn out when appropriate.

Pic is the leg of a lovely horse who spent some time with us while on box rest following a serious tendon injury. Comparison of his leg at an early stage and then later on in his recovery.

Today was our weekly Sleip (gait analysis) session for all our rehab clients. We have made this a regular routine for all of our rehab liveries and it has been fascinating to watch the changes from week to week.

I think this is particularly helpful when we can use it right from the beginning of their stay (once they are able to trot up). Often this is post surgery and being able to track their recovery with objective analysis allows us to monitor progress closely.

A quiet Sunday afternoon means I had time to get some admin done including renewing my FEI Permitted Equine Therapist status.

This means I can work as a physio at FEI events providing I register myself with the Veterinary Delegate on arrival and make sure I only provide therapy that I have full training in and am insured to provide - which should be a given for any therapist in every situation!

SLEIP-Y SUNDAY: something a bit different today!

For the last month or so we have been trialing a very sophisticated gait analysis app to see if it will be useful for our rehab work.

One of the issues with rehabilitation is a lack of an objective way to assess progress. So I might think a horse is moving better than it was but without any real data to show this it is just my opinion.

I have been interested in gait analysis software for a while now because of the research work I have been involved in. However all the available kit has been expensive or too complicated to use in the field. So I was delighted to hear about this system!

We have been trotting all the horses up once a week to get baseline readings of their movement and then monitor any changes.

I think this will be a fantastic addition to our rehabilitation programmes and am excited to be able to offer it for our inhouse liveries.

We will now be able to monitor closely how they are progressing with their rehab and spot any potential problems at a very early stage. Sleip
