Dog saved by one word...

Well i learned today that all my determination in training my dog paid off.

Went out for a walk this morning with my dogs. We live in a nice neighborhood on side streets. Our walks will take us into other neighborhoods in the area by crossing some busy roads.
Well we were approaching one of those busy roads and a squirrel ran across the road. Now we all know that dogs and squirrels have a serious love/hate relationship. My one little girl started pulling heavily on the leash and the clasp broke. She started running after the squirrel on the other side of the street.
My heart stopped. I immediately yell "HOLD". She stopped on a dime and froze. She had not gotten to the busy road yet and my training her that one word "HOLD" helped her from getting hit or even killed by traffic.

She is OK and my heart was able to resume its normal pattern. She got lots of praise for listening.

No matter where you live or what you do to protect your pets, training them to one word commands can save their lives.

If nothing else train them in two habits:
Stay(HOLD) and Recall (COME).

P**p Pipe!

My dogs and I have an arrangement. They p**p; I pick it up. But rather than make daily trips to the trash can, I built this p**p pipe. It's just a large piece of 4-in. PVC drainpipe sunk into the ground a foot or so, with a trash bag lining it and a cap sitting loosely on top. A rubber band holds the bag in place, and the cap helps keep odors at bay. When the bag gets full, I just take it to the trash bin and put a new one in the drainpipe.

Do you have a gobbler?

Adopting a rescue you never know what their situation was before they came to you.

One of the habits I have noticed is they are gobblers. What I mean is they eat their food in 2 seconds flat. Its a habit that they might have had to do to get food.

I would get one of those special bowls that helps slow the dog down when eating. Most of the time it did not work or they learn how to turn the bowl over to get the food out.

One thing i do now is try a ball in their food dish with there food. That way they have to push the ball around to get to their food. This way if this works then i save money buying the special bowls.

To chip or not to chip...

Daily I see people posting that their dog has run away and no where to be found. Even weeks later I still see they are missing.
I have seen stories of owners being reunited months or years after they disappeared because of chips.

All my dogs that I have had were Microchipped just in case and the online information kept up to date.

My years of working in pet stores I have had several dogs just appear at the front door of the store. I would always take them in and keep them safe while trying to find the owners. Thank you to all those neighborhood social media sites. I found most of the owners very quickly.

When I could not find the owners quickly, I would hope the dog had a chip. It was always easy if the dog had a microchip with the info updated. I have had a few that were not chipped or the info was not updated. Those poor babies had to go to with animal control. I only knew of 2 that found their owners.

Microchips for dogs and cats are inexpensive and may bring your pet back to you quicker. There are some companies that require you to sign up for a monthly or yearly subscription to keep your info and help if needed. Do your research I have always used the companies that have free lifetime subscriptions.

I highly recommend getting your dog or cat chipped. Make sure to update your info when things change. It will help getting them home to you.

Separation Anxiety..

When I adopted my dogs one of the biggest issues i ran into was separation Anxiety.

When I would go away leaving them in their crate i would come back to find anything i had left them (bedding, bowl of water) was either torn up or just pushed in a corner. Another issue was them sleeping all night in their crate.

Long ago someone told me "let them sleep with you in bed and you won't have the sleepless nights." I tried it and he slept all night.
My issue was that it was a twin bed at that time and Squeaky was a Great Dane. I didn't sleep much hanging on for dear life to the side of the bed.

It made me realize i either needed a bigger bed or maybe Squeaky needed something to comfort him in his crate at night. I did some research on how dogs senses work, the sense they mostly rely on is "scent".

So i wore an old t-shirt for 2 days and placed it in his crate with him at night. We had the best night sleep in days. When i left for work i would do the same and he would be just great in his crate.

Sometimes our dogs need reassurance that we are near by and them having something that smells like us comforts them.

Did you know most bad dog behaviors are a result of human error, or human misunderstanding?

Here is the problem you face: When a dog misbehaves, we will blame the dog. However, most bad dog behaviors come from us.

Which means you have been inadvertently rewarding your dog for bad behavior. You have been miscommunicating with your dog.

Lucky for you there is a solution!

Let me introduce to you an easy and effect way to communicate with your dog and to stop rewarding the bad behavior.

• Your dogs bad behaviors can fade away
• Your dog will be better behaved and more obedient
• Your bond with your dog will become stronger
• Your dogs ability to learn will skyrocket
• Your dogs health will improve

Destructive Chewing…..
Useful tip..

A good way to discourage chewing on furniture or other items is to use a spray on deterrent (Bitter apple or Bitter cherry). Both are made from all-natural ingredients.

First thing to do is take a piece of tissue and spray it with a bit of the deterrent. Place it gently in your dog’s mouth. Allow them to taste it and then spit it out. If they find it unpleasant, they will usually shake his head, drool or retch. They won’t pick up the piece of tissue again.

Ideally, they will get the connection of the taste and odor. They will be more likely to avoid chewing items that have that smell.
Apply the deterrent daily to the item for 2 to 3 weeks.
Keep in mind this is not the only thing that is going to stop the destructive chewing. You must make sure your dog knows what they can chew on and what they can not.

If you can catch them in the act, then offer them something else to chew on (bully stick, pig ear). Something they will enjoy better then a table leg.

Destructive chewing…

One of my favorites is training. Training needs to take place daily to re-enforce what they have learned and to learn new tricks or commands.

Training is very rigorous for your dogs brain it will tire them out quickly especially puppies. Training can take place anytime just have some tasty treats handy and teach them to sit, lay, or stay through out the day.

“Great idea, but I work and only have a few hours a day to spend with them.”

You can still do training before you leave and after you get home. It only takes a few seconds to re-enforce what your dog has already learned.

Even after your dog has learned new tricks or commands, the key is to re-enforce those commands or tricks.

Destructive chewing…

Come home to find the stuffing from your sofa cushion all over the room and your dog there looking at you saying:

"I don't know what happened it just exploded!"

Your first reaction is to show your dog the destruction and scold them for it. **This should not be done because they will not connect the punishment with their behavior they did hours or even minutes ago. You need to catch them in the act for them to understand.

Some dogs can get bored if they do not get enough mental and physical stimulation. They will try to find ways to entertain themselves and one way could be destructive chewing.

So be sure to provide some exercise for their brain and body.

There are several ways to do this, outings, off leash play, tug o war games, fetch and training.

Your Dogs Teeth...

Have you ever had your dog breath at your face and you just about pass out? It might be their teeth!

Dogs need their teeth cleaned on a regular basis just like you.

There are different ways to get your dogs teeth cleaned.

- Dental Chews, treats that help scrape away plaque and tartar in hard to reach areas. (look for ones that are soft, so the teeth sink into the stick)

- Teeth cleaning gels, no brushing needed. Just 2 or 3 drops on the gums helps eliminate plaque and tartar. (This can really help freshen that breath)

- Brushing, With a specially designed tooth brush or finger brush. You can brush the teeth daily to keep that plaque and tartar from building up.

The final way that it can be done is have your vet do the cleaning every once in a while but that costs $$ and your dog would have to go under anesthesia. I am sure you have heard that this can be difficult for most dogs and there always are risks.

If you start when your dog is a puppy its easier to train them not to be fearful of their teeth being brushed. If your dog likes treat then that should be the way to go. Always look for treats with the least amount of ingredients.

In time you will have a dog with clean teeth and Fresh Breath!

Itching and Scratching....

There could be a number of other allergens that might be effecting your pet.

Environmental..

If you recently noticed your pet itching and scratching and they have been ok with their food then maybe something environmental has changed.

Seasons (Spring and Fall) can be one, just like you they can tend to have seasonal allergies.

The easiest and sometimes the cheapest way to help your pet with that is Benedryl. You can get it from any pharmacy.
(CONSULT YOUR VET FOR PROPER DOSAGE).

Another environmental allergy could be to something you may have changed at home. (Cleaning Product, Air freshener, Plant). Again its a process of elimination.

More to come! Stay tuned.

If samples for the food your switching to are provided at your Pet Supply store you can try them to see if your dog likes the food first. If they don't then get a small bag to start.

Changing Dog Food!

If you are going to switch your dogs food you need to introduce it gradually. So make sure you have plenty of the old to do the transition.

The longer you stretch it out the better usually 30 days is best.
It can be done in as little as 5 days but you need to have an extra item. "Pumpkin Puree (Organic)" This is Metamucil for dogs. It works both ways helps stop the possibility of diarrhea and helps them go if constipated.

If you Opt for the 5 days you will need to divide portions listed below.

Day 1 80% Old Food...20% New Food
Day 2 60% Old Food...40% New Food
Day 3 40% Old Food...60% New Food
Day 4 40% Old Food...60% New Food
Day 5 20% Old Food...80% New Food.

Make sure your adding the Pumpkin Puree (Organic). You can get it at most Pet Food stores. You can also get it from your grocery store just make sure its organic.

If your going to take the longer version just spread out the percentages accordingly.

If your doing this to check on your dogs food allergies you have to give it 30 days of feeding to find out if that fixes the problem of itching and scratching.

If your dog still has the itching and scratching then will have decide on a new protein and start the process over.
If your first attempt didn't work and you are looking for another protein try an exotic protein (Kangaroo, Alligator, Goat).

There may also be other allergens that are causing your dog to itch and scratch.

Stay Tuned!!

Dog Food Allergies!

Dog food for years has always had Chicken and Grains in it. It was cost effective for the manufacturers.

So over the years pets have become sensitive to the ingredients that their ancestors ate over and over. This goes back to Europe with feeding chicken.

First thing to do is switch your pet off of chicken!

When searching for another protein to switch to you have to read the ingredients panel. Make sure chicken is not on the ingredients. You might notice chicken fat way down the list that should be OK. You can look for Beef, Turkey, Lamb or Pork. If you can stay within the same brand it will make it easier on the tummy to switch.

You say why Turkey? It's poultry like chicken.

True its poultry but its from the North American content. Chicken is not from this continent it comes from Europe. That is where the pets ancestry comes from.

Don't just switch off immediately you need to slowly introduce the new food. The most common mistake is just give the new food and that is it. This could cause serious tummy upset and you might have to clean up!

How do I properly switch their food?

Stay tuned!

Dogs Scratching a lot?

Earlier i brought this up and told you that Food allergies are one of the main causes to pets scratch or chew at their paws a lot.

Chicken and grains are the first two ingredients that can cause this. You can go to the Vet and pay lots of $$$ to get the results of blood tests.

Is there another way?

Yes there is a way to find out what is happening and help you and your pet feel better.

Its going to be a process of elimination.

About 90% of dog foods contain Chicken and 60% contain grains. You are going to have to eliminate one at a time.

How can I do this and not upset my pets tummy?

I can show you how and help you and you pet avoid the tummy upset and we all know what happens with tummy upset!

NAIL TRIMMING has always been difficult with lots of dogs. Most of the time it's because they are afraid of having their paws touched.

Years ago a dog trainer i knew gave me an awesome fix to that. I have done this with every puppy and rescue i have had and it works.

It doesn't happen overnight so you have to be patient. You can do this while watching TV.

Sit on the floor with your doggie between your legs or next to you. Take one paw at a time and just gently rub it. Make sure you get in between the pads and toes. Over time of doing this your dog will be more comfortable having their paws touched. They also will love treats for allowing you to do this.

Just like all training it takes time and eventually you and your doggie companion will be much happier.

Dog walking or are they walking you?

I would be walking down the street with my dog on a leash, and someone would always ask “Who’s walking who?” I would laugh and keep going.

If I could take a nice walk with my dog without feeling rushed or trying to keep up with him would allow me to enjoy those walks more frequently.

I now enjoy those walks. I learned the proper training to unlock my “Dogs Hidden intelligence”.

Are your dogs scratching alot? Chewing on their paws?

It might be allergies.

There are different types of allergies. Food allergies can be the main reason for this issue.
Chicken and Grains are the first two main ingredients that can cause allergies.

Vets can run an allergy test but that can be lots of $$$

Hang out with me and I can give you some ideas to try and help.
