I am exhausted but I could not be prouder of this group than I am right now!

This semester VTCC Conrad Cavalry has worked so hard to learn, grow, recruit and help with the care of the horses they ride. Today they showcased their knowledge and growth during their Pass in Review on the Virginia Tech campus. Turner Ashby (Ash), Winning Edge (Charlie) and Sweet Joni M (Joni), were bathed, braided and shinned up for the occasion.

This feat could not have happened without their dedication and willingness to learn not only horseback riding but also the horsemanship skills needed to manage an approximately 1200lb animal with a mind of their own in an unknown environment. In addition to the number of hours the Cadets have put in we could also not have done this without the support of so many people outside the organization! Including but not limited to the following people:
Chip Kinzey - letting us borrow multiple McClellan saddles, period breast plates and headstalls
Karis White - allowing Charlie to take part in the PIR
Jessica Bortner-Harris - trusting me with caring for Joni and allowing her to be a valued member of the lesson program
The Harris family for allowing me to borrow their truck and trailer for the occasion
Walnut Springs Stables - for allowing me the opportunity earlier this year to move my entire lesson program to their facility
And Gabi and Lydia for being my right hands Thursday and Today!

Thank you all for your support! I cannot wait to see what the fall brings for this group. (More pictures to come)

We are excited to share that we are hosting a one-time Equine Breeding Management Series this spring that is open to all Virginia Tech students. This seminar series will consist of 6 zoom lectures (Tuesdays at 7pm – see flier for dates – Meeting ID shared with students by email) on varying topics from experts in the field. The series also include 2 in-person clinics. One on pregnant mare monitoring (how to monitor normal progression of the mare leading up to foaling & tools for predicting foaling) and on foaling basics and foal watch procedures at Virginia Tech. There are four sessions of each clinic (all the same) to allow for flexible scheduling with all options occurring 3-5pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, or Fridays in February. All clinics are hosted at the Smithfield Equine Unit. If you participate in a clinic, you can then volunteer to assist with that aspect of our 2024 foaling season to get additional hands-on experience (i.e. Attend a mare monitoring clinic – sign up to help with our daily checks on pregnant mares as we get close to their foaling season. Attend a foaling clinic – sign up to help with day or night foal watch for our 4 pregnant mares expected to foal March through end of April). A certificate of completion will be awarded to any participants that attend at least 4 lectures, 1 mare monitoring clinic & 5 pre-foaling mare checks, 1 foaling clinic & 8 hours of day or night foal watch by the end of the semester. Participate in the seminar to whatever extent you can! Open to all undergraduates, graduate students, veterinary students, and equine volunteer program participants. Contact Natalie Slone (Equine Manager) [email protected] with any questions.

Update #2

It is with both sadness and excitement for the future that I am writing this. I have been leasing Farmingdale Stables since I opened WIREC in August of 2020. My lease ends this weekend as the owner has decided to take the land in a different direction. I am grateful that he gave me enough notice of this change to figure out what the next step is.

The lesson horses and I will be moving to Walnut Springs Stables where I have been given the opportunity to run their lesson program as Heather takes a step back to focus on the family catering business. Heather will still be managing the farm and their boarders. So if you have any boarding questions or inquiries please continue to reach out to her. I won't be able to help you in that area.

I will continue to give lessons on the weekends as the weather allows. If you would like information on lessons please send me a text message at 585-705-5696. In the coming weeks, once the horses and myself get everything moved and organized, I will have more information for all of my students. Please be on the look out for lots of information in Group Me.

It has not been an easy decision to close the boarding side of my business and I am truly grateful to each and everyone of you who has allowed me to care for and love your horse as my own. I have met so many wonderful horse owners over these past few years. I look forward to seeing you all at local events and clinics in the future.

I will be working with Heather to see about hosting clinics and shows this coming year 😀 So be on the lookout for future dates and announcements.

Thank you also to everyone who has helped me mentally and emotionally through this process!

Update this week #1
As many of you know I am in the process of downsizing my lesson herd. I have a number of items available for sale that do not fit my current horses or I no longer need the item. Additional farm items including water troughs will be added tomorrow. I am motivated to see these items so I do not need to move them. So make me an offer 😉
