Happy Gobble Gobble day all! 🦃 Just a friendly reminder to keep a close eye on your pets today! Check out the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center page for more helpful tips on what is and isn’t safe for your pet this thanksgiving 🐶

Thanksgiving is a time for friends, family and holiday feasts—but also a time for possible distress for our animal companions. Pets won’t be so thankful if they munch on undercooked turkey or a pet-unfriendly floral arrangement, or if they stumble upon an unattended alcoholic drink.

Motivational Monday!
Training your dog can be hard, it can be frustrating at times, others, you may just feel like you do not have the time for it. These are normal human emotions, just try to remember to get in the habit of remembering it’s not your dogs fault. Become a team! Incorporate your training and playtime into your daily routines. For example, when you feed your dog in the morning, practice a “Sit, Wait, Release” when you take your dog potty set a few extra minutes aside and throw a ball after they’ve gone, during this you can practice more cues before and after throwing the ball.
Stay tuned for more tips!

Fun Fact!
Did you know a dogs sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times stronger than a humans? Dogs have 300 million olfactory receptors compared to a humans 6 million. Dogs also have a scent organ that humans do not, which allows them to detect pheromones .
It is extremely important to allow your dog to sniff! This allows them to be able to take in their environment and learn about the world around them.

Socialization is the process of desensitizing dogs or puppies to the myriad things (objects, people, sounds, environment, etc.) they will encounter in their daily lives.
The most important time to socialize your puppy is in the first 3 months of their life. You should encourage your puppy to investigate their environment, but never force your pup to approach/investigate new things as this could cause negative associations.
If you’d like to learn more about socialization, check out our new puppy package here:

Stress signs....they can be very subtle or are slap in the face obvious.
I know some people do struggle to see signs of stress in their own dogs...and I made this to help show some of the more common ones.
There are plenty of others...

Sniffing....attempting to disengage from a situation by being suddenly very "interested" in a scent.
Tail position.....Wags can mean the opposite to happy and stiff tails, high stiff "flag" tails.
Coat.....It can bristle completely or only in parts, tail, rear rump or along the whole spine.
Hesitancy.....suddenly stopping, changing pace, lowering the head and stretching it out.
Not all are listed and you may know your own dogs stress signals.
It is important to note that some of these signs are also shown when a dog is in a state of excitement....context and situations all need to be taken into account.
It is ok if your dog shows some signs of stress....it is communication and is very valuable information for you to quickly address what is happening, or about to happen.

Stressed dogs tend to have closed mouths and tighter faces, but those closed mouths open when drooling, panting or lifting the lips to give a front mouth grin.
Ear positions should also be looked at, they are often a sign of stress in many dogs...but not all.

I often get asked why I called our business ABC Dogs.
All
Behaviour is
Communication
and stress behaviours are certainly communication. 🙂

Encouraging dogs to sniff on walks is not only natural and instinctual for them but also has many benefits for their physical and mental well-being.

Sniffing provides mental stimulation for dogs, which is important for their overall mental health.

A good sniff also helps them to learn about their environment, identify scents, and understand the world around them. Through sniffing they can also release pent-up energy, which can help to reduce behavioural problems.

Additionally, sniffing can help to alleviate stress and anxiety in dogs, making them feel more relaxed and comfortable on walks.

DON’T GET A DOG –
DON'T GET A DOG UNLESS YOU CAN COMMIT TO SHARING YOUR TIME & LIFE WITH THEM
In an ideal world dogs would be included as part of the family and we would share our time and life with them. In reality, many people view dogs as an item of property, a commodity to be bred and make money from, a cheap, replaceable security system with a built-in barking alarm, a garden decoration, a toy to play with when the kids are bored or a fashion accessory that looks good when we’re out walking, running or taking selfies with.
Dogs are not objects, just like us they are sentient beings with the capacity to feel a range of emotions. A life spent confined to a backyard or fenced in with little or no human companionship is not a life. Dogs are naturally social beings and need to spend time with their human family. They need love and attention, exercise and mental stimulation. They need routine, consistency and predictable patterns to feel secure in our world. They need to feel safe, secure and protected if they are to be the best version of themselves.
Having a dog requires commitment, patience and dedication. It’s hard work, it’s sometimes messy, dirty and stinky, it costs money and often requires changes to our lifestyle. It’s a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly, but the rewards of forming a family bond with another sentient being can bring so much joy and enrichment to both our lives and theirs.

So very true!

If your dog is performing a behaviour you don’t like, teach a behaviour that they can do in that moment that’s incompatible with the unwanted behaviour.

Let’s make the learning journey with our dogs a positive one!
