********** FIREWORK ADVICE **********

For anybody that has a missing dog due to the fireworks please follow as below. There is every chance the dog will return when he/she has calmed down. Do not shout their names or whistle for them this will only heighten their anxiety levels.

If the dog has gone missing from home please do the following ASAP. Leave some items of family unwashed clothing and a little bit of food outside in your front garden and if its safe to do also leave a door slightly open so should he/she make it back to the home he/she will have easy access back into the home.

Leave some items of family unwashed clothing or anything with the body scent on of the person the dog, has most bonded with and leave with a little bit of smelly food ie tinned sardines, smoked cheese, chicken, or anything smelly etc, near to where he/she went missing from AS ABOVE. This does work we have had a large number of dogs return by doing this but it needs doing ASAP. Polo/tee shirt, PJ’s, old well worn coat, walking boots with smelly socks inside, even the bottom sheet from the bed works. As much unwashed clothing as possible we need to get your scent airborne ASAP.

9 out of 10 dogs will go back to where they went missing from so please do the above ASAP.

Firework season is upon us. I’ll post some tips to keep your dog calm, safe and settled over the coming days.

TIP 1.
Make your dog a safe space. A den is ideal. Maybe under the stairs or under the dining table. Use their crate (if they like a crate) cover it with blankets and play this YouTube video on repeat.

A few weeks ago I did a puppy visit for wee Ozzy. His humans had been doing a great job with him but just wanted a few pointers and to get started with training. Ozzie came to class this week and it was so lovely to see the progress he’s made. Clever Dog ❤️🐶

Balls and dogs… 🥎

Recently at a wedding someone was asking me for some advice for their dog after his recent surgery. He had fractured a bone in his forelimb and they said “it happened chasing a ball, if we had known it wasn’t a good thing to do we wouldn’t have done it”.

We hear this so often; everyone we see loves their dog and wants the best for them, but ball throwing and dogs have become synonymous in people’s minds and there is a strong culture for it - it looks so fun, it tires them out quickly and we think it is keeping them fit.

But what is actually happening?

Repeatedly stimulating their prey drive keeps them wired and overstimulated.
Motivated to carry on chasing, they work way past muscle fatigue, and high adrenaline means they won’t be aware of pain at the time.

What is chasing?

Fast uncontrolled acceleration and deceleration; twisting and turning without thinking about their bodies.

What happens to humans who do this in sport in a much more controlled way?

ACL injuries, Achilles ruptures, fractures… no surprise then that this is similar to what we see in our canine clinic.
Help us to help your dogs and spread the word.

We will be following this up with some ideas of fun ball related activities for your dog which aren’t repetitive chasing 🙌
