Abby trying to take off the end cap of a rope perch. I haven't used a rope toy or rope perch in years after reading about birds eating off little bits and getting a crop impaction. This perch came with the new travel cage and Abby was very interested in the ends. I'll keep it for now because I'm a toy hoarder but I don't trust her with it! LOL

Here is Tai, named after the Swahili word for eagle. Tai is a wild caught bird captured by wildlife traffickers then sent from Zaire to the US under false documents in 1992.

Tai was in the first shipment of 135 birds sent to Florida, mostly Congos with a few Timnehs. When the smugglers attempted a second shipment, authorities in Zaire seized the second shipment before it left and notified US authorities that the first shipment was illegal.

The USDA confiscated the first shipment of birds and the greys were sent to a local ranch where all the birds lived loose in a barn for 5 years.

In 1997, a few months after I brought my first grey Anansi home, I saw a notice in the newspaper that the USDA was going to auction 135 greys in Otay Mesa, CA. I called and was given the background. The birds had received excellent care in the 5 years by their caretaker but the government had basically forgotten about the birds and were now getting around to auctioning them away. Florida didn't have the facilities to hold a large auction so the birds were sent to CA.

Tai is my largest and most intimidating bird. In the years I've had him, Tai has steadily lost his fear of humans and become more and more aggressive. Other than his capture and subsequent horrible treatment at the hands of wildlife traffickers, Tai has not been mistreated but he still wants nothing to do with humans.

Moshi the Timneh African Grey in a travel cage parked in front of the vet's office. Travel cage kept bare to avoid injury in a moving car. Birds in general hide their illness or injury to avoid attracting a predator's attention. So important to watch for unusual behavior and contact your vet if it continues. Like at most vet offices nowadays, owners are being asked to wait in the car while the pets are brought into the office and treated. Very grateful for our wonderful vets and staff for keeping our pets healthy.
