Visited the spillway yesterday and counted nine young adult cats that came out to eat. I know there are more, as I saw a post on Facebook where someone counted 15. It’s easier to find the very shy ones at night as they peek out from the rocks and your light catches their eyes.
Not very long ago, a group called S**T ran by Jan Price had set up feeding stations and cat houses in the brush down river for the cats to winter in, and had volunteers taking turns to feed the cats and just check on their welfare, as well as trapping and having the cats spayed or neutered and health checked then re-releasing them if no other options were available.
In memory of our sweet Jan, I’d like to start up again, for the welfare of the cats and to make things easier for those who fish at the spillway.
To get the ball rolling, I’d like to get volunteers lined out for simply feeding the cats on a daily, consistent schedule. Volunteers can provide their own cat food, or pick up donated bags from me, I don’t live very far from the lake. I’d like to also be consistent on what they eat, and if anyone has any recommendations on a quality cat food that’s affordable, let’s hear it!
If you’re interested in volunteering to feed the cats, either once a week, or once a month, just shoot me a message! We do NOT pour food on the direct walkways, parking lot, spillway ledge or stairs, for the safety of the cats and those who are fishing. There are plenty of nooks and crannies in the rocks to pour cups of food in to keep the mess down and the cats safe.
