When handling a dog, I always like to give space when passing others so that I keep both my dog and the other pedestrians feeling comfortable. Repositioning your dog onto the opposite side of you is one of the best ways to give more of a cushion between your dog and the others. Having Yourself in between the dogs is the best way to use your body to communicate that you are in control of the situation. This way if any reaction were to happen, we can also cut in front of our dogs to make a direction change. Having this simple trick to “switch” keeps your dog in a good state of mind and doesn’t accidentally put any stress on our dog by trying to get space from the other by freezing up or getting tense. Lincoln is such a fast learner it’s incredible. The poor guy has never had a name of his own until now. I think it’s safe to say he’s happy to have one because he has taken to the name Lincoln easily. Teaching your dog how to respond to leash pressure is the first step to good leash manners. All we’re doing here is conditioning him that when he feels leash pressure, to check in with the handler. He is a strong boy and extremely eager to meet any people, pee on every corner, and chase every squirrel which means it’s about time to teach him how to walk proper on the leash and to pay attention to who on the other end of it! He wasn’t pulled off the streets long ago which makes this a huge change of pace for him and he is taking it incredibly well! I look forward to posting a follow up video in a week from now of his quickly learned leash skills and expanding into heel, focus, speed changes, socialization, etc. •••••••••••••••••
I love this analogy! If I tell you to stop thinking about elephants… all you’re going to be able to think about is elephants! Instead give them something else to focus on. Stop telling your dog to stop jumping up, stealing food, being a pest, peeing on the floors, reacting to an other dog on your walk, etc.Instead tell them to come, heel, place, crate, sit, down, stay. Redirecting your dog onto yourself and working their brain with some already conditioned commands is the best way to help your dog make good decisions. Lincoln is on his way to becoming the perfect companion since being rescued off the streets of st. Maarten! He is wild but I know if we can channel this energy he has into working and learning with us, he’s going to be amazing!Already since filming this video, Lincoln and Rocky are cohabitating happily in our home thanks to structured walks and place training in the house. Relationship building between two dogs should look calm and controlled. With this energetic boy, it’s important that we give him plenty of exercise before we can expect him to behave properly with us and the other dogs in the house. With patience and time, these two have sorted out their places in our pack. Lincoln is even learning how to play free heartedly! This can be tough since he’s always had to be defensive to protect himself on island. It’s a beautiful new beginning for him and he is learning super quickly.
