A student took some of the savannah form zebras home for the summer and brought this one back knocked up. I've actually never been able to get this form to produce, but in the student's words, the male was "trying to get it" all summer. Looks like he got it.

I suck at videos, but had to document this. This is my 2023 holdback pair of Varanus primordius (George Clooney the Monitor Lizard and Jennifer Varaniston). He is helping her excavate a burrow/likely future nest. Shared parenting responsibilities in lizards. Wild stuff.

Not a project - just for fun. Big Horn Mountain, CA rosy boa from DC Rosy Boas.

My youngest really took an interest in the roughies this summer and has been handling and feeding them. And while he holds his own with a seven-foot, fast-moving python, we started researching something he could learn with without me having to be present. Had one myself as a child and had forgotten that these are one of the best snakes there is.

This little female has lots of red on her and loses pattern with each shed. May have accidentally triggered a cycle (not my intention to breed these in their first year) so furiously working on another enclosure that allows 14-18 inches of sandy loam throughout.

Pile of zebras from unrelated parents. Mom heavily pregnant again. Haven't posted anywhere, but will soon. Two spoken for, but the rest have personally told me that they love the idea of going as a wholesale lot.

Sorry for graphic image. Cat attack victim Ophiosaurus sp. killed while laying eggs. I managed to manipulate a couple of them out and am incubating them.

Can't tell if she's lumpy or not and I seem to be prone to illusions lately...

One of the two species I keep where I actually care if they produce in a given season (the other being the primordius). Everything else can just chill and enjoy the room and board - cool if they chip in, but I like their company enough to let them freeload.

These though, they're just about the last of their kind in captivity, and the only breeding adults I know of. Need some nice big batches from my two unrelated pairs this year until the holdback girls are ready for the spare males I acquired.

The body language here is promising.

Egernia hosmeri. These actually belong to the MOA Reptile Club and were purchased with club funds. But they arrived today in Melbourne, and I guess I'll just have to take one for the team and keep them here until Monday. The sacrifices I make.

Huge thanks to Savannah Noland at Perfect Hue, LLC

Primo cam capturing a no-doubter gravid female coming out of the nestbox. Trying not to disturb her at all as they're ridiculously picky nesters.

The coming-soon upgrade for these will allow for 18 inches of whole-enclosure nesting. But for now this is the spot.

Also some "baby" primordius out this morning. Five months old and huge - finish one shed and start the next. Finally got these ones eating more variety. They were cracking out on crickets for the longest time.

Tons of courtship behavior this morning from one of the new pairs of Xenagama wilmsi. This project has turned a bit obsessive and is not without its failures. Hopefully the others kick off soon.

One of the new males got a glimpse of the new female and, as you can see, is particularly motivated.

It's missing something on the left side - feels too open there. Help me figure this out.

Big gray thing on right side is nest box, which is something I'll always include as an option with egg-laying species, even with deep substrate throughout.

Xenagama wilmsi build almost done. I am going to regret this tunnel system. I know it already.

Some of the new wilmsi arrived today - this went from fun little experiment to trying to preserve the species in captivity within just a couple years. Not even.

This is Nugget, one of the babies from my first hatch of X. wilmsi back in 2022.

No one who sees one of these in person doesn't want one. They're pretty spectacular - and next Wednesday we'll have almost all of them in the US. Getting to work on three bloodlines. 🤞

Nugget lives in the Marine and Oceanographic Academy's dedicated reptile room, where he's in the care of some of the smartest kids in Florida. I hope to give the students their own breeding group of these some time next year.
