YOU ARE NOT EXEMPT! If a law or store policy requires a leash, YOU must use one! It doesn't matter how much training your dog has, how friendly your dog is, how long you plan to be there, it's all irrelevant. Service dogs are forced into retirement, people who are afraid of dogs are scared, and dogs are not perfect. This is why rules and laws about leashing dogs exist in the first place. If a leash is required, use one! And no, a shock collar is not a leash either...

PRESENTATION TITLE - Preparing for Public Access Training with a Service Dog
SESSION DESCRIPTION:
When training a service dog, the most daunting part of training is usually public access training, when the dog is training to work in places that do not allow pets.

Both professional trainers and owner-trainers alike often don’t know what skills the team should have prior to starting public access training. Social media can often muddy the waters further with videos taken of dogs who are stressed during training, dogs being taken into difficult situations without proper support during training, and teams who appear perfect and polished in a video less than a minute in length.

This presentation is designed to identify the differences between socialization and public access training, common mistakes made during public access training and how to avoid them, and skills to focus on to prepare for public access training.
🐶Come and join us! Please help us be the antidote to harmful training and pet care.
🐴66 sessions over three days.
🐦You can access the recordings for 12 months, and there are great CEUs.
😺Let's join together and create a large platform of ethical and compassionate pet care shaping the industry one paw at a time.

Training tip Tuesday: let's be clear on what having a reactive means or doesn't mean! Your dog needing extra support doesn't mean you failed them. Your dog having big feelings doesn't mean the reactivity is your fault. Your dog needing to be set up for success doesn't mean your dog needs to be "cured." Never EVER allow someone, even someone claiming to be a pro, tell you that your dog just needs to "figure it out" that others won't hurt them, and subjects them to stressful situations or forces them to confront their fears. This is abuse and you should walk away from anyone promoting it.

Fact or fiction: When transporting your dog, you should either place them in a crate or buckle them in rather than letting them roam freely. FACT! Allowing your dog to roam in the car is unsafe for the driver, the dog, and other people on the road. The driver can become distracted, the dog could be ejected in an accident, and a wreck could cause others on the road to wreck. Always secure your dog with a seat belt or a crate.

The 4 quadrants describe how learning takes place. They are not REQUIRED for learning to take place. Some people mistakenly believe that, because punishment is part of operant conditioning, that training requires the use of it to be complete. This couldn't be further from the truth! In fact, operant conditioning (reinforcement and punishment) is not required AT ALL for learning to take place. For example, using classical conditioning for counter conditioning, fits in none of the quadrants of operant conditioning. If someone is telling you that all 4 quadrants are needed or are best practice, it's time to find a qualified professional to work with.

Fact or fiction: A proper professional listens to your concerns and addresses both your needs and your dog's needs. FACT! You are an important part of the equation, and if you don’t feel comfortable with the training plan, you have every right to speak up. Someone who brushes off your concerns or doesn’t have complete answers to questions on their methods is not acting in a professional manner. Don’t be afraid to walk away from a trainer who doesn’t listen to your concerns.
