I recently posted about how the idea for a veterinary app came about. I thought I would briefly write about my professional journey.
I graduated from Massey University in 1994 (I can't believe next year is my 30-year class reunion!) and, like most of us at that time, embarked in mixed animal practice. The care of individual patients and their owners eventually led me to switching to 100% companion animal practice where I worked in London, then back in New Zealand, including a referral centre near Wellington. It was there that I decided to pursue my special interest in internal medicine; I successfully passed my membership exams for the Small Animal Medicine chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. I have since been involved as an examiner for the college a number of times.
My wife has repeatedly urged me to pursue fellowship examinations, but the commitment in time (with a young family) has kept me back (never too late, right?!). I am an avid reader of as many journals as I can get a hold of, with the goal of maintaining my own standards, but also to keep the information in the app as up-to-date as I can.
I am in awe of the professionals in our industry that give their lives to improving the health and welfare of companion animals all around the world. And my thanks to those who have helped me along the way!
