Idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, often referred to as IBD, is defined as a group of intestinal disorders of unknown cause which result in inflammation and recurring gastrointestinal symptoms in dogs.

Though the mechanisms that lead to IBD remain to be unravelled, it is believed that the gut microbiome can have an influence on disease progression.

Studies show that dogs suffering from IBD have changes in their gut populations, such as a decrease in certain bacterial groups within the phyla Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes (generally considered good bacteria), an increase within the phylum Proteobacteria, plus a reduced diversity of other microorganisms.

However, more research is needed to better understand the functional consequences of these changes and the possibility of using treatments aimed at modulating the gut microbial communities to manage IBD and other intestinal diseases.

Over the past years, the gut microbiome has been the target of numerous studies, as evidence builds up on its active role in a range of body functions and the development of disease.

Though most research is driven towards human medicine, interest in the canine gut microbiome has been increasing.

The truth is, studying the canine gut microbiome can prove valuable to both dogs and their owners.

With the similarities found between the microbiota of humans and dogs, research on the canine gut microbiome can provide valuable insight from a translational medicine perspective, which is to say we can learn things from canine research that can be helpful when applied to human patients as well.

Over the last couple of years, we have seen raw foods gain popularity amongst pet owners, as they are usually perceived as more natural than commercial diets.

The truth is, many of the benefits that were claimed regarding raw diets, such as that they can be more digestible, promote normal stool consistency, and improve oral health, don’t have a strong evidence base.

On one hand, pet owners who feed raw diets to their pets report that their pet has a healthier body condition, higher energy level, shinier coat, cleaner teeth, and normal bowel movements. They also believe that their pet has fewer health problems.

On the other hand, research shows several risks have been associated with raw feeding, including nutritional imbalances, the presence of potentially harmful microorganisms, such as Salmonella spp. and E. coli, and the spread of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.

What does this mean for you as a dog owner?

Our advice is for you to discuss this with your vet, factor in the pros and cons of a raw diet, and then make an informed decision on what’s best for you and your dog, as there’s no such thing as a perfect diet.

As the interest in the canine gut microbiome grows, new research brings to light how the microorganisms in the gut might be linked to a range of diseases.

Autoimmune disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease, are no exception.

In fact, gut dysbiosis has been recognised as a factor contributing to the initiation and severity of autoimmune diseases, with these diseases usually arising from the interaction of a range of factors.

There is also evidence that the composition, diversity and activity of the gut microorganisms can influence disease outcomes, which could be interesting from a therapeutic perspective in the future.

Every dog is unique, and so is their gut microbiome. This means that each dog has an individual profile of microorganisms in their gut.

However, most of these microorganisms are bacteria, with the predominant phyla in healthy dogs being Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Fusobacteria and Proteobacteria.

Knowing that these similarities exist is important, as it allows for comparisons. We know what the general canine microbiome is like, so we know what your dog’s gut microbiome should be like.

What is fascinating is that this information is not static. New sequencing techniques have shed light on the gut microbiome's composition and function, and new insights on how these can affect health are bound to emerge as technology evolves.

There is a delicate balance among the microorganisms that live in your dog’s gut (microbiota), with changes in this balance being known as dysbiosis.

With the gut microbiota having a role in a range of body functions, research has shown an association of dysbiosis with gastrointestinal disease, though it is still not clear if it’s a cause or a consequence. 🔬
