We've had our first mishap. 💔
Gabe busted down the gate containing him while we went to dinner last night. (Probably to explore the house, socialize, hes super friendly and loves to be loved. HE is said to be dog friendly.)
Soldier is small dog friendly for certain, but has had very limited exposure to larger dogs...he has however acted jealous towards Gabe. (Crying at the door when Ive taken Gabe out to potty...a little growl as I walk by with him, thats easily corrected...)
We came home to 2 injured pups. Both are (relatively) minor, but I am still heartbroken over the incident, as both have been through so much already.
Gabe is heading back to the vet this morning to have about the bottom inch of his stiches redone.
Soldier has some bites to the snout area. He is already on antibiotics due to his last vet visit and cancer/tumor diagnosis, and we were given extra pain meds for him at a prior vet visit as well, so I am also giving him a little something to knock the edge off. With antibiotics and pain meds already, another vet trip seems unnecessary, but I will keep an eye on him of course.
Neither boy acted as if they were in any pain last night, but super affectionate, happy to go on evening walks, loving towards the whole family.
Also in the living room where this happened was (3) 7 week old kittens and (3) 5 week old kittens we are fostering, as well as my 18 pound sh*tzu mix female. None of them were even touched. I do not believe either fella is aggressive, Im sure alot went into the incident.
Gabe has not yet been neutered, Soldier has an unknown history with dogs his size or larger. They are both large males that had not "formally" been introduced....
Gabe is scheduled for transport on Friday, so he will remain at the vet's office until then, where he is very beloved by the staff.
This incident was very unexpected (he's been with us 4 days, with no incidents), and we are very upset over this. Both of these fellas rescues have been very understanding, for which we appreciate more than they know. And yes, these things sometimes happen...but after such a good run, one starts to think they won't happen to them. 💔
On to the vet...
