Say you're out practicing loose leash walking with your dog and someone with a child comes up and wants the kid to interact with the dog. What do you do? If this corresponds with your plans for your training session (it's always good for dogs to get used to people of different sizes), you might agree. But then you might not. Always take into consideration your dog's needs before another person's. You're his advocate. He looks to you for his safety and security. We play games with our dogs. We don't train them! If you're not having fun, then you're not training the right way - the 2-Minute Trainer way! This may not look like training - Booker is playing Boom!. But it's Booker listening for his cues, waiting until it's okay to knock another thing over, and getting rewarded. Here's more about the 2-Minute Trainer philosophy: https://2-minute-trainer.com/2018/09/13/dog-training-games/

Booker loves to put his blocks and toys back into the bin after I dump it out onto the floor. It took a while to train that behavior, though. And it took longer than just a couple of training sessions. The 2-Minute Trainer Session Log helps you remember where you are in your training - what's going right, what needs work, and ideas for the next session. A student contacted Hope this week with some disturbing news. Her young dog bit a care-taker at the doggy day care. Hope delved deeper into the story and recognized that this is one of the rare instances that training isn't always the answer. Read the article to discover the root of the problem. Did the dog become reactive and aggressive? Or was there something else going on...?

What is all that stuff? And what does it have to do with dog training? Sometimes we lay out random stuff to train around distractions. Other times we lay out stuff to see what our dogs will do with it. That's called freestyling. You may want to only put out a couple of items, or you may want to dump a lot. See what your dog does. He may invent a new game! Read more: https://2-minute-trainer.com/2024/06/21/dog-freestyle/

Say that your dog has been struggling with a behavior - just not getting it, not getting it. You're being patient and trying different approaches, but still struggling. And finally he gets it! What do you do? Keep on going with just a simple acknowledgment, or stop and celebrate? Doing it right has to look different, otherwise he's not going to do it again. If you're not having fun training your dog, and if your dog isn't having fun, you're not doing it the 2-Minute Trainer way. The few minutes a day you spend playing games (training) your dog should be the most fun you both have. Now, who has more fun than Torque - with a cardboard tube??? Dogs need your feedback - no matter what you're training. So many of my students just go on to the next thing without acknowledging what their dog just did. Unless your dog has done something correctly 89 billion times, tell him he did good! If you're not going to give a treat every time, alternate with praise or a pet! But give him feedback. The old saying goes something like, if you give a man a fish he has one meal. If you teach him to fish, he'll have meals forever. Same thing with dog training. If you're always telling your dog to get off after jumping on someone, you're always going to have to tell him that. On the other hand, if you teach your dog to go to his Place when the doorbell rings and stay there until you tell him to get off, he'll have a much more socially acceptable behavior to fall back on. Dogs are copycats. Simon (on the left) learned most of the behaviors he knows from Booker and the other dogs just by watching, I think. It's certainly been much easier to train him after he's watched his brother do a behavior. Don't believe me? If you have two dogs, try it. Dogs can even copy some behaviors from us! My sister's Torque learned his Stomp behavior by watching Hope! Read more: https://2-minute-trainer.com/2023/11/03/dogs-are-copycats/

If you want to train your dog to put his toys away to show off for the family these holidays, you'd better start now. There are a number of steps to the behavior, and your dog won't absorb all of them in one session. Download the 2-Minute Trainer Daily Session Log page to write down where you left off. You'll be able to refresh your memory more quickly at the start of your next session: https://2-minute-trainer.com/2-minute-trainer-daily-session-log/
