We get asked this all the time: What's the best dog training treat? There's no one answer, because it's different for every dog. Your dog has a hierarchy of treats. The ones at the top of the list, the primo, best of the best, treats are the ones that he gets at class or when he does something so wonderful you didn't think you'd ever see the day. Here's a valuable skill to teach your dog: step over him! Have you ever been walking, your dog is lying in the middle. Simon's on the left. Booker is on the right. They're both Boston Terriers - and they're related. You'll never find two more differently minded dogs in the same breed. Their personalities are totally opposite. Simon is the most serious dog we've ever had. Booker (possibly) the silliest. Training them the same way would be completely unproductive. Fran achieves success by training the dog in front of her while she's training.

Your dog can sit in the kitchen. He can probably sit in the living room. Can he sit in the basement? In the back yard? In the front yard? On the sidewalk? What do you expect from your dog? In training, sometimes, it's easy to have unrealistic expectations. We expect an awful lot from our dogs. Take Simon, here. I know him and I know what he's capable of. But when we're starting something new I lower those expectations a little. Because every experience is different and every training session is different. Once I know that he knows something, I have very little hesitation in building on it and expect more from him. The bottom line is - know your dog and make sure that your expectations don't exceed what you know about your dog.
