It's a constant frustration to Hope and me when our students don't reward their dogs for getting something right. Doing it right has to look different. Say you're training your dog to lie down. And then he does it and you're all matter of fact, "Oh, yeah. That's good. Now do this." And you go on to the next thing. Your dog will remember what "Down" means if you stop and make a huge deal out of what a good dog he was. And maybe he'll do it again the next time. This photo was staged (we gave Simon a piece of spinach for his hard work), but one time we actually did find his French Bulldog brother on the counter helping himself to some turkey. Dogs can understand signals/gestures just as well as words. There's no reason a deaf dog can't do anything a hearing dog can.

Torque's Bowling Game fell apart when he decided cronching the pins was more fun than playing it my way. Slowly, we're getting it back.

A variation on "Put your toys away."

Sometimes you have to modify and/or adapt your games to your dogs' abilities. You probably recognize the post in this game - it's the one made by a major baby products maker. And you probably also know those aren't the original rings. Those are fatter and the center hole just fits over the post. Keeping in mind that our dogs really can't see the post when they're playing this game, we found dive rings, common this time of year.

The "Touch!" training game can help teach "Back!" Toss a treat between and slightly behind your dog's front legs. They'll move "Back!" to get it and give you the opportunity to name it and reward it.
