First show of the season and my superstar boy went and won both of his competitive obedience classes 🏆🏅 Pre- Beginners & Beginners. So proud of us and we’re excited to start training for the higher classes now! 🥳

Today was Archie’s (Jack Russell) first group walk and when the walk began he started tentative & disengaged….. Which is completely normal, it was new environment, new dog and I’m also relatively new to him!

But these are the steps I took to get a happy, engaged dog by the end of the walk:

✅ Let him decompress and sniff to begin with
✅ Got him moving and used movement to help him relax
✅ Once he had relaxed I began marking and feeding any engagement he offered
✅ Let him watch while I engage with the other dog on the walk. I find this helps dogs ease in to new walks and they get curious what all the fun is about!
✅ Play- I threw food out that he could chase & search for

All dogs are individual so you may need a slightly different approach depending on the dog, but these are good starting points ☺️ By the end of the walk, Archie was much more comfortable with me and engaged- looking forward to seeing more of him on group walks!

When walking high energy/ drive dogs they often have excess energy to begin with and I want them to have a productive way for them to express that! So we will start with an activity such as toy-food searches/ obedience/ play. This prevents their energy from manifesting as undesirable behaviors and helps ensure a smooth walk overall🙌

If you find that the beginning of your walks is chaotic, consider incorporating activities to direct your dog’s energy positively. Engaging in these activities together can also strengthen your bond with your dog 💖

Introducing Group Walk & Train Sessions✨

I’m excited to offer Group Walk & Trains, a great opportunity to enhance your dog’s training in real-life environments. If you’re looking to improve your dog’s focus, obedience, and general life skills around distractions this will be the perfect set up!

Our Group Walk & Train sessions combine social walks with integrated obedience exercises. Each week will have a different focus, tailored to the needs of the you and your dogs🙌😀.

Look who’s back and all grown up! Who remembers Willow? 😍

She is currently having a mixture of solo training walks & group walks with me. She has A LOT of energy and needs guidance on how to manage that and her arousal. But she is a lot of fun once you give her a way to express herself 🖤🤍

Before teaching new things or working on behaviour modification, first look at your foundations of your relationship…

Do you have?…

🫶 Communication: you have a clear established marker system so you can create clarity and understanding when teaching new things.

🫶 Value: your dog sees you as a source of fun and fulfilment. You spend quality time together through walks and play.

🫶 Trust: you advocate for your dog and their needs and have created trust by trying new experiences and exploring new environments together.

🫶 Boundaries: you have established rules in place that your dog respects, but you also respect when your dog needs their own space and down time.

🫶 Fulfilment: you do activities together which meet your dog’s breed specific needs.

I truly believe once you have this lots of the ‘training’ will become easier!

Beautiful sunday walk with 🍯 This was the first time we met Honey and Twix enjoyed playing with her (of course!) and Arlo just did his own thing as usual 😊

I really love that I can take my dogs to places where they have never been and with dogs they have never met and trust they will still listen and ‘behave’ with little input from me 🥰

Diablo joined the morning group today😍 He is such a nice well mannered boy and fitted in beautifully with the other dogs. I nearly didn’t drop him back off home, I would definitely steal him🤭

⭐️ Review ⭐️

‘Heather’s walk and train service is amazing and has made a huge difference to our rescue dog’s behaviour. Heather tailors the training to whatever needs to dog has at that time and has shown great flexibility over time to help address various training needs. Her communications are great and each session is always followed up with informative videos of the training so that we can apply it at home and keep up the progress. Heather also runs small group walks which our dog enjoys so much. All in all a great service with a trusted trainer who looks after our dog like it’s her own.’
