I’m very saddened by this most recent pitbull news story. It’s absolutely devastating and I can’t imagine what that family is going through.
Rescues and dog trainers need to do better. We need qualified eyes on these situations (regardless of the breed).
I actually just completed a week long evaluation of a really nice pitbull. When I returned her to the rescue I wrote a full assessment the length of a college paper. Aside from my assessment of her as an individual, I also included a full history of the breed, an explanation of difference between genetic “gamedog” traits vs typical behavior of a poorly tempered, poorly bred reactive dog that happens to be APBT etc. This dog also happened to be super high prey drive, so I included training recommendations that would speak to this super important genetic imperative of hers.
I know rescue groups want to do good for these dogs but the world does not run on good intentions. To the same point, trainers need to educate themselves dive deeper, understand genetics, and be honest about what they are qualified to do.
