I am so thankful for all of the amazing technicians who have helped me along the way! Could not have done my job without you all. Cheers to all Veterinary Technicians!

How can we say thank you during National Veterinary Technician Week? One important way is by making sure we empower veterinary technicians to do the work they've trained for.

During this pivotal and transformational time in our profession and our world, AVMA is more important than ever in guiding the future of veterinary care. Veterinary Medicine has enjoyed a long history of providing exceptional care for the animals we serve, and valuable contributions to our society. Our profession has a promising future as animals continue to play a critical role in our lives and our world. It is only together with a strong sense of purpose and conviction will we be able to face the challenges that jeopardize the strong foundation of our profession. The Global Pandemic has created a transitional time and we have stepped up to the challenge. As Veterinarians, we are experiencing exciting momentum but reaching a potential breaking point in capacity. AVMA has and must continue to seize the opportunities to learn, adjust, and support veterinarians as our world transforms.

It is my pleasure to introduce Dr. Rena Carlson, Candidate for AVMA President-Elect.

Having served in the position, I can tell you that Rena has unparalleled qualifications for this office. A native of rural Idaho, Rena grew up on her family farm where she developed her desire to become a veterinarian. Initially she was an associate small animal practitioner at Alpine Animal Hospital in Chubbuck, Idaho and then became an owner of the practice for the next 25 years.

In addition to her busy working schedule, Rena started volunteering as a leader in veterinary medical organizations and has held numerous positions of increasing responsibility at the regional, state and national levels. Regionally, she has served as secretary, treasurer and president of the Eastern Idaho VMA. At the state level, she served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Idaho VMA. Nationally, she served the AVMA at all levels. She served in the HOD as the Idaho alternate delegate and delegate for 10 years before being elected as the District XI Director and serving on the Board of Directors for 6 years. On the board, she honed her knowledge and leadership skills.

Two major areas of focus for the AVMA are advocacy at the federal government level, and developing and maintaining our strategy. Rena was intimately involved with both during her term on the BOD. She was chair of the Legislative Advisory Committee for 2 years and then chair of the Board’s Strategic Management Committee for 2 years. Her service on the BOD culminated with her being elected by her peers to become an AVMA Officer and member of the Board of Governors, first as Vice Chair and then as Chair of the Board of Directors.

Rena is eager to continue her service to the veterinary profession as a candidate for AVMA President-Elect. She is very much qualified for this position and will continue to lead our organization forward!

I am Rena Carlson, Candidate for AVMA President Elect.

I have enjoyed, and continue to enjoy, an amazing career of 30+ years in Veterinary Medicine. Whether working on a local level with a city ordinance, state level and our practice act, or at a national level, the veterinary perspective and the veterinary voice is critical in protecting, promoting, and advancing animal health care.

My goal as AVMA President elect is to serve all AVMA members, listen to all perspectives, build relationships, and advance our profession. AVMA has been, and must continue to be, the leading voice for veterinarians.
