We are all farmers…👨‍🌾 🚜 🐑 🌾 🐓 🥦 🐖 🥬 🐄 🍌 🤗

Without a plough in sight, tractor to drive or gumboots at the ready, we are, to the surprise of many, all farmers. However, for most this is by proxy. For where and what we choose to buy tells farmers what to produce and how.

And whilst this weaves into the intricate system of market forces that creates the diverse range of consumer products, there is a great and often underrated force as well – our kindness.

This is never more true than for farmed animals. For what we choose to put in our supermarket trollies and what we choose to leave on those shelves represents their greatest hope for mercy. And whilst bigger cages, free range systems or analgesics for painful procedures acknowledges their sentience and may provide some marginally better circumstance for the hapless animals, nothing offered here circumvents the inescapable, dire and unnatural end for them – most within their first years of life.

However, the good news is that the collective social consciousness of us all is being heard by farmers, manufacturers and even financial institutions across the globe. From climate change to environmental sustainability to the treatment of animals – never before have our individual choices had the ability to have so much impact.

So please remember this: we are all farmers and we reap what we sow, as does our one and only wondrous planet and all of her unique inhabitants. And when one sows the seeds of kindness, we cultivate the most humane world possible for all.

Four years ago today, Lefty's Place's other founder, Justin, exited the world in spectacular style when he had a massive heart attack right in front of the supermarket he never shut up about - Aldi. Just minutes before he collapsed I had told him on the phone to get to the hospital as he was having arm pain and sweating. He didn't go and that was the end of his time here.

It was only in the last ten years of his life that he learnt how amazing, clever and unique sheep were. He was one of the roughest men you'd ever met, a big talker, an even louder laugher and a drummer who could give you an instant headache - but his heart was big under all that rock star dirt and he loved those animals endlessly.

Justin was a drummer and one of the few possesions I was left with after his death was his beloved drums. Just last week I finally sold them. I turned down many prospective buyers and finally said yes to one who felt right. When the car turned up to pick them up, an excited ten year old boy jumped out of the passenger seat talking non stop about the drums. I picked the right person, there is no one else Justin would have wanted his cherised drums to go to.

So, it's now been four years that I've carried on caring for these animals and taking in more. We found a new home and we are still turning in to the best place it can be. I guess none of it would ever have happened if Jus never picked up those two young sheep that day in 2011 - Lefty and Righty.

On February 9, 1991 Mike Hill was killed by a huntsman while out hunt sabbing.

While trying to stop the unsuccessful hunt from moving on to another location, Mike was crushed under the trailer of a pickup truck.

Mike’s death was the result of years of hunters’ built up aggression and violence, coupled with a police force that simply didn’t care.

The animal rights movement responded with attacking the huntsman’s home in what was described as a riot.
