SOAR is a new dog rescue that focuses on the rescue of senior large dogs: 10 years and older. When we rescue, we never know what we’ll find as far as the dog’s health. Senior dogs, especially, have more health issues. If an owner knows or even suspects problems, they just turn these dogs in to a pound, a vet, or just dump them. Even on an OTI, owners are not always truthful.
Upon intake and during the foster process, issues may be found or arise. Dental, cancer, severe joint disease, allergic issues/skin issues and/or Valley Fever are common.
SOAR is a rescue dedicated to seniors and possibly younger dogs in need of hospice/end of life homes and care. SOAR will primarily intake large dogs who are 10 yrs and older. We are always hopeful these dogs will find an adoptive home but in many cases, this isn’t a reality. Many seniors come with health issues: known and unknown and/or are too much to adopt out due to age, medications needed, short life expectancy and a very small adopter base. Seniors, 10 yrs old and older, are much harder to adopt out. People have a hard time having a dog for a short amount of time and the euthanasia process is very difficult.
SOAR will allow seniors to live out their lives with a permanent final refuge foster or a fospice home. This may mean months or possibly a year or longer. All these dogs need a safe, comfortable, loving place to spend their final days, months or years. The goal is to provide an established group of senior fosters. It is basically known as giving Comfort Care for the rest of their lives.
MISSION STATEMENT:
OUR MISSION IS TO RESCUE AND PROVIDE SAFE , CARING, LOVING FOSTER HOMES TO HOSPICE AND SENIOR LARGE DOGS LOCATED IN ARIZONA.
For seniors that have minor issues, all efforts to adopt should be made. If these efforts fail, a final foster home needs to be found. For seniors that have medical issues that make them unadoptable, a final foster home is essential. Exceptions are any other dog we rescue that is found to have a terminal issue and needs a hospice home as well.
Founders, Cindy Lamont of Prescott and Ann DeGarmo of Scottsdale are both avid rescuers of senior dogs. It is not only a passion but a gift. Ann is a retired nurse that puts her talents to work rehabilitating seniors and caring for hospice dogs. Cindy Lamont has been rescuing dogs for years now and through a cancer diagnosis, has decided to follow her passion and talent as a senior dog rescuer along with her fiance, Bill Nicholas. We currently have two locations: Dogtree Pines in Prescott in Arizona and Annie’s HAWKS in Scottsdale, but will primarily work through a network of Fosters.
Together we have targeted a need for senior dog rescue in Northern Arizona and have committed to using our talents to help as many senior dogs as possible.
Please contact us to volunteer, foster, donate, or assist in marketing/fundraising events in either Scottsdale or Prescott.
