West Virginia here we come!! Appalachian Trainer Face Off bound with 🩵🐴

12/08/2023

🌟 "3rd required post"🌟🌟

🩵Breed: BLM Mustang

🩵Age: 7

🩵Sex: Gelding

🩵Height: 14.1

🌟As our journey together comes to an end this little mustang will be looking for a home at this years Appalachian Trainer Face Off

🌟Bayou is one of the sweetest and most curious horses I've met. He's super goofy and never fails to make me smile. he's a kind sensitive guy and is super aware. Always willing to learn and quick to do so. The only thing that's ever held him back was fear. Once you gain his trust, the sky is the limit. A lot of his work has been desensitizing and teaching him to use his thinking side of his brain and not reacting if/when he gets frightened.

🌟His hobbies include bossing other horses around in the field, rolling in the mud(especially after a bath), standing in the rain, playing in water, whether it be from a bucket, hose, or puddle. He absolutely loves getting tons of attention in the form of grooming and neck scratches.

🌟Bayou's ideal home is one with lots of turnout and a comfy stall along with other horsey friends. His perfect adopter is someone who is willing to continue training(as he is still green) while also being a strong, consistent, and confident leader. He's great in the arena and on the trail. He has speed but is also perfectly content just walking on a loose rein. This guy has a good head on his shoulders and could excel in many different directions!

🩵Make sure to stay tuned, as we leave Wednesday for West Virginia!!!🩵

🌟🌟🌟Special thanks to our sponsors for your support!!! 🌟🌟🌟

🌟Bayou is a 14.1 hh BLM mustang gelding from Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC

🌟This lil mustang just continues to impress me more and more as the days go by! These past couple weeks I have noticed a major change in Bayou for the better, he is now walking up to me when I go to get him from the pasture, whereas before he would walk away with his friends. He also has way more confidence then he did when we first started this journey together! I’ve recently been spending a lot more time riding him and bettering his skill set under saddle, we are currently working on getting control of all the major body parts and working on his backups. Can’t wait to see what more we can accomplish together with a little over a months time left till the competition!

🌟If you’re interested in adopting and think Bayou may be a good fit for you please feel free to message me with any questions.

🌟1st required post for the Appalachian Trainer Face Off

🌟This lil fella is coming along very nicely!
Bayou is a 7 year old 14.1 HH BLM mustang gelding from the Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC

🌟When I first brought Bayou home he was very timid and unsure, therefore we’ve been taking things slow at a pace he is comfortable with. As I help this boy build his confidence he is finally coming out of his shell and letting more and more of his personality shine through!! Bayou is such a sweet soul and is very willing to please, whatever I ask of him he always gives it his all!

🌟We’ve been working on a lot of desensitizing exercises along with exposing to all sorts of stimuli, I want to ensure Bayou is not only comfortable and confident around me, but also with whatever may be going on in the environment around him. By teaching him that it’s ok to get scared but if he does, to look to me for the answers instead of overreacting

✨What he knows so far✨
-leading
-standing tied & ground tying
-picking up all 4 feet (standing for farrier)
-standing for grooming, bathing, & fly spray
-yielding hindquarters & forequarters
-backing
-inhand obstacles
-loading onto trailer
-lunging w/t/c (both directions)
-flexing on ground and under saddle
-standing to be tacked & mounted
-one rein stops at the walk & trot

🌟As we continue our time together I will be working on bettering his current skills and getting him soft, supple, and more confident under saddle.

🌟I can’t wait to see what the next 2 months have in store for !! Make sure to follow so you can stay updated on all his progress along the way!!✨

🌟Special thanks to our sponsors for your support on this 100 day journey!🌟

Tomorrow will mark 1 week since I picked this cute lil fella up from West Virginia for the 2023 Appalachian Trainer Face Off. Bayou is making a tremendous amount progress! This guy was very guarded and timid at first but he’s coming out of his shell more and more everyday as he becomes more confident. Even though he may be unsure about certain situations he doesn’t overreact. Ive been taking things slow and working on gaining his trust. So far we’ve worked on round penning and establishing a consistent change of direction to the inside, yielding his hind and front end, tying, backing up, picking up all 4 feet and being touched all over his body, along with lots of desensitizing and exposure to new objects.

We are still looking for more sponsors, please pm me if you’re interested in supporting

Great 1st day of the Appalachian Trainer Face Off for

This little fella got his first trim for the competition and did a phenomenal job standing for the Farrier. I wanted to give an extra special thank you to Lake City Forge Farrier Group for sponsoring us! They are so patient when it comes to working with these animals and do outstanding work!

I spent the day really getting to know Bayou, he is such a kind and smart horse with some of the sweetest brown eyes! He’s going to make someone a great partner at the end of our journey together.

So honored to be part of this amazing event! 🙌

So honored to be part of this amazing event! 🙌

The Appalachian Trainer Face Off pick up requires so much of our team.

It requires so much from trainers across the country, too.

The application, both applying and processing goes on for months.

Horses have to be picked up and moved for weeks across half of this coast.

The vetting costs, paired with the labor and skill needed for a large number of ferals is massive.

The manpower for 3 days to set up panels that all weigh about 130lbs each is exhausting.

We have volunteers that drive half a day each way just to be there to help.

Trainers come to give 100+ days of their lives to train their selected horse.

It's really almost miraculous.

Thank you to our volunteers, fosters and staff if you helped do absolutely anything leading up to or / and during this event.

I know we will all need a week to recover 🤣

It's nothing less than candid for me to say, "We can't do it without You."

Equine Medical Center blocked off a full day with their whole large animal practice for us on Monday, and they even popped in for a last minute float on Tuesday.

Thank you, Trainers for going through the process to make it to pick up!

We collectively are saving the horses of Appalachia.

Who’s excited for this years Appalachian Trainer Face Off?… I know I am!!

I’m so happy to be doing this competition put on by Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC once again! This will be the 2nd time for me, I competed once before with back in 2021 and can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store! This competition challenges and inspires me to build on and better my skills as a horsewoman.

On Monday morning I’ll be heading to West Virginia to pick out my next horse.

Helping these horses go form unwanted, to finding there forever home in 100 days time is something I’m very passionate about and is very near and dear to my heart, however providing for these animals can get expensive especially with everything rising in cost, therefore once again I’m asking for sponsors and/or donations

There are a few ways you can help support us along 100 day journey

Once I have picked out a horse I will be creating an Amazon wishlist for people who would like to donate items off of there, you can also donate straight to Heart of Phoenix and get a tax write off (make sure to include Jordyn Dominguez so they know who to send the money to) or you can donate via PayPal at [email protected] please know that every little bit helps.

Stay tuned to see who I’ll be bringing back with me!!🐴🤩

*90 day update*

My oh my where has the time gone? It seems like it was only yesterday that I brought this sweet little filly home. I have had the best time training this girl and while I’m sad to see our time together come to an end, I’m just as excited to see her find her 4 ever home and bring someone as much joy as she bought to me over the past 100 days!

Paprika 14.2hh 3yr old Dun Quarter horse X

This girl would do great with an intermediate rider or an advanced beginner that has access to a trainer to help them along the way. She enjoys any discipline as long as you keep her mind engaged, I’ve ridden her english and western, she is very athletic and likes to go fast, she would definitely excel at speed events.

This girl is smart! She try’s her hardest to accomplish any task you throw her way.
She has a natural curiosity, is very levelheaded and never overreacts when she gets scared. I’ve tried to expose her to everything under the sun, tarps, umbrellas, cattle, gunfire, dogs, balls, bridges, children, pool noodles, water obstacles, trains, and much more she takes it all in stride! I’ve taken her on trail rides, a cattle drive, and a train robbery.

She leads, loads, ties, picks up all 4 feet (stands for farrier), takes fly spray, stands to be tacked up and mounted, lunges, w/t/c
both directions, backs up on ground and under saddle, flexes, one rein stop (emergency stop), yields hindquarters on ground and under saddle, yields forequarters on ground, and has a two rein stop.

Special thanks to our sponsors for making this all possible!!!

Great info to keep in mind when looking for a horse, remember horses only know what they are taught or allowed to get away with.

"Because you can’t, it doesn’t mean the horse can’t: a talk about accepting responsibility for what You do not know"

We run into this often. I know most quality training barns out there do, as well.

A horse in a program knows how to load, pick up all 4 feet, accepts fly spray, neck reins, respects personal space, canters safely, stands to be mounted. . . You name it, the horse does it, or maybe he does most of it, and then he goes into a NEW home, and the truth is, the adopter or buyer typically will be less skilled than the professionals selling or placing the horse from an adoption program (though they will often not adopt it),and things unravel.

You get a call or email in 3 weeks or 3 months, and it goes like this:

“Nelly won’t load. No one can load her. I doubt she ever loaded.”

You suggest they remember the day Nelly loaded from the facility like a gem, but they do not see how that matters. They insist the horse cannot be loaded now, and therefore, no one can load her, and the horse is the problem.

Let us try another scenario:

“Nelly runs me over every single time I open the stall, she won’t stand to be mounted, and she bucks the minute I try to get on.”

You suggest they remember the day they came to meet Nelly, and you remind them how you went to the stall, took her out, how she stayed out of their space, how you put the fitted tack on her, how she stood like a gem, how they then mounted and rode her off nicely. They insist it was a fluke. It isn’t the horse they have now. They end up never asking for lessons to fill the deficit in knowledge they, not the horse, have in their skillset.

This is how good trainers get a bad reputation, this is how good horses end up neglected and discarded, and this is how a novice (even if long time) horse owner never really takes responsibility for what they do not know and need to learn.

If someone else accomplished something with a horse, the HORSE KNOWS. If you cannot recreate the same things with your horse, then you do not know, and as a result, you can undo a good horse quickly with ignorance and with mistakes, both large and small.

I’ve seen so many horses come into the rescue as surrenders because the owners DID not know enough to keep the horses in order. I’ve seen it hundreds of times.

For instance, one year a horse was turned over for bucking. He bucked like a bronc, and a trainer took months to undo this bad habit. It is hard to say what caused it: Poor saddle fit, rough handling, mixed signals or maybe all of that, but a good trainer fixed his issue. Undoubtedly, it would happen again, with an unskilled person. It is unlikely the unskilled person will realize or admit the problem is Not the horse.

Horses get labels that are unfair because of this.

We receive horses called dangerous all of the time that never show us a dangerous side, and it is important to understand a HORSE KNOWS what you know and what you do not. So sometimes, months of training isn’t even needed to fix behaviors; sometimes, the horse simply realizes he is being handled fairly and correctly, and he responds in the way he learned to respond years ago – as a partner. And the truth is, forcing a horse to endure ignorant treatment without responding isn’t realistic or kind, either.

Please never make the mistake of limiting the horse to WHAT YOU know. He usually knows more than you.

So if you saw a trainer ride the horse W/T/C without an issue, load the horse, back the horse, pick up all 4 feet, receive respect on the ground or whatever else you’re not seeing now, then be fair to the horse, and spend your time assuming the shortcomings belong to you, not him.

14.2hh 3 yr old Dun Quarter horse cross.

This little filly is going to make a great mount for an intermediate rider, or confident beginner that has access to a trainer, as she is still green. She is very willing and try’s her hardest to understand any task given to her. She’s very kind and loves people especially kids. I have yet to find something that really scares this horse. She is very levelheaded and doesn’t overreact. As she is still young She could be shaped into a show horse, she is very athletic and likes to go fast, she would excel at speed events, but is also versatile enough to ride the trails all day long.
